Capitalist society

Well it would depend on the income of course. I've known people that worked and lived in their van. Not druggies either. not a lot of course, the practical reality is I think that the only people that really get their lights shut off and stuff are people who mismanage their money, mostly druggies.
you would be surprised where I go to give shut off notices, we do that for business. doctors at times., gas stations a lot of restaurants. the largest bill I have seen.(went there yesterday as these all are regulars) is 2 grand usd and I have also given them to churches.

..and if you ever get hurt or sick without health insurance, down the creek you go.......

depends on what it is and I can say with cancer. its best to have supplemental cancer insurance which isn't often covered under conventional insurance.

I have supplemental insurance. Tricare doesn't cover much on cancer. of course if im forced out of the guard, I wonder what deal I can get with usaa.

There are so many people living on very tight budgets, or those on fixed incomes, who have their utilities shut off because they can't afford them. With food prices up, gas prices up, utility costs up, a limited & fixed income can only cover so much. Many Seniors or those on disability either don't know about programs that help to pay utilities, or they don't qualify (because of total household income) for those programs. It doesn't mean these people mismanage their money; it's more that their money isn't sufficient enough now to cover basic living expenses.

some states during the cold that isn't allowed.

True enough, jasonc. My state won't allow gas/electric to be shut off during the months of November - February.

I have no solution for that. it does cause costs to go up as it must be payed. which makes it worse but if people could donate money for those that don't have the funds say a rainy month fund.

I used a home loan calculator and by the time i saved enough for the min deposit for the average house price these days i would be on my last legs if i even make it that long, by the time i payed it off. lol. I should change my username to 'Renter 4 Life'.
in 'merica, one can borrow 100% and go through fha and get points via first home owner purchase, and other acts. if one is a vet the rates are lower and also 100% financing. the va wouldn't deal with me at the time because I was late paying them back(50 bucks).

My state, jasonc, has a program called LIHEAP (low income heating electric assistance program), but if one's total income is too high, the program can't help. It used to be some of the churches would help members of their congregations who needed the extra assistance, but more and more, the churches cannot afford to do that. Many have become involved with food assistance programs.

The various electric/gas companies used to encourage bill payers to add a bit extra for a version of a 'Good Neighbor' program. But most don't do that any longer.

fpl doesn't do that , I think. where I work I don't think so.

budget billing? fpl does that but theres nothing like that. I was late with them a lot when I was hurting for a year but it never go bad enough where I had them cut me off.

Budget billing is offered just about everywhere in my state. But if one payment is late, the utility will take the customer back to a monthly billing. Then the customer has to go 12 months with on-time payment before the utility will agree to budget billing. I can understand the utility company's position.

I know that a few years ago, the city lost 2 million in lost revenue due to those that either couldn't pay or didn't pay. you know how small that town is and how much that can reduce rates.

Ouch! Yes, if that $2 million had been paid, the rates would have been much lower for everyone.

$12,000 to $14,000/day for an ICU and that is basic care.No ventilatiors....etc.

My daughter spend 3 hours in a ER a couple of years ago. They did not doing any trauma procedures. In fact I thought they could have done more. The cost $4,000.00.
