Christmas, Biblically sound, or Catholic baggage?

Do you believe that Dec 25th was the date of Christ's birth?

Christmas .... easy a pagan holiday that RC folks tried to mask as Jesus Birthday.

Sad

I'm going to hell because I celebrate the birth of the incarnate God on Dec 25th. That's a hinderance? MERRY CHRISTMASS CJ!

Not at all Thess, I fully believe you're saved.

But, your "savedness" needs to be worked out into the other two parts of your being.

This is a matter of reward, not eternal salvation.

I don't worship an altar of Christmass by the way. Very few of your "facts" are 'facts". Thanks for caring though. Peace.

Well, most good folks who worship at the altar of Christmas feel the same way, but if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck,... it be a duck Thess.

Hey, cj signed my free ticket to heaven. Thanks but but I'll work out my salvation in fear and trembling thank you.

Thank you for those infallible words henry. I guess you have to take on such opinions because the contrary, that we actually do celebrate Christ's birth and give him praise on that day in our Churches is just too much for your closed mind to handle. That Catholics actually could celebrate the birth of Christ and speak about it from the pulpits just doesn't fit with your prejudice. So a pagan holiday it is. That makes you comfortable when you sit in your johnny come lately roll your own supposedly "bible believing Church". Or was it you who said that having Church buildings was pagan as well. So many doctrines out of one bible. Everybody wandering around proposing their own theories about Christ. Look over here, he is here or look over there. Didn't the scriptures tell us what to do about winds of doctrine? Why yes it did.

I signed nothing silly, the Lord signed it when He caused you to believe.

As for you working out your own salvation with fear and trembling, there's a prescribed way of doing so, and it is to simply remaining in fellowship with the apostles and their ministry, something that, from the words I see you speak on these boards, is obvious you are not doing.

But the Lord did say to the greater church,.... "To those who overcome,..."

Once again in cj's over developed ego about himself he thinks he is telling me something I don't know and that the Catholic Church does not tell me.

sigh. Yes, oh infallible one. When I see you standing at the pearly gates I will start trembling. Until then I will let Christ lead me through his Church and not some individual who thinks he is the one who was sent. Look here here is Christ says CJ. Do not follow after him say the scriptures.

And again, cj in his prejudice thinks he is telling me about a verse I have never heard and have no clue about. He ihas put himself as the one who defines truth for me to follow. How nice.

Blessings

Thess, I know that because of your darkened doctrine it is difficult for your to see clearly, but honestly don't tell me that you can't see that I'm playing with you.

Do whatever your fallen heart desires, the Lord knows.

But I'm amused that you are yet to learn that your silliness does nothing to deter me from speaking the truth to you.

Oh I am confident you have heard these verses many times,... just as confident as I am that you have little or no clue as to the reality contained in them.

And so, without losing a beat,... I'll continue to bring you the good news in hope.

Could that be because the things (gifts) we give others would not appeal to Jesus?

I was thinking about this, this year. Something felt empty as I went about our family traditions - making a list and checking it twice, gonna find out who's getting a $20 or $50 gift? Something felt so empty. Then I watched a few TV commercials which advertised donating toys under the store Xmas tree, for kids in need.

Then a few more things happened and I realised Jesus was trying to teach me something. What you've said above isn't entirely true. For what we give to the least of those, we give to Christ. Even if it is junk - it's the thought of giving it to those who are the least on Earth.

When I think about all the money I spent this year on family who had the money themselves to buy what I did - then we exchange gifts as a gesture of good will...I thought - we don't need good will. We possess good will and we are giving it to others with good will also. Isn't it wasted on ourselves?

As Jesus said only the sick are in need of a physician; isn't our good will there for those without? My family aren't without but we keep giving to ourselves year after year to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Next year I'm planning to spend that money on those who need it. I don't know how, where or how much but I trust Christ will show me. I'm even going to try and get my extended family to try a new tradition next year, of extending good will to all who need it.

What we give the least on Earth we give also to Christ.

I must echo farley's sentiments. Klee, that was a wonderful post.

My change of heart has been a long time overdue.

Think only of the Lord, for it was he who inspired me to see beyond what I wanted to get out of Christmas for myself.

I hope your change of heart becomes contagious.

What I believe you are touching on is the matter of charity.

This is not charity in the form of religious giving but more along the lines of simply recognizing how the economy of God works and simply desiring to be one with it.

God is love and therefore God lives out love.

God doesn't give love, He is love and therefore He gives cause that's what loves does.

still though, we need to be careful that we test the spirit of our giving, not because the giving is wrong but because the source of the giving might be corrupt.

The bible is clear, even when we are giving we could be giving snakes and not know it.

There is no time of seperation from the ministry of the apostles, it is just one continuous fellowship. And there is no one time of the year that is a better time to give than any other time of the year.

Remember what Jesus told the rich man,...... seel everything you own, give it to the poor and then follow me.

Did this mean that after the man had given everything o the poor he no longer had anything to give?

No, it means that to really begin giving you have to have nothing to give.

Therein is the mystery of losing your life so that you may gain it.

Isn't it better to give than to doubt the good it will do?

That is correct...But in order to do that you must first give him some of your junk.

In your case...what ever it took to change your heart. Praise God it is part of dieing to self.
My change of heart has been a long time overdue.

I hope this becomes a common reoccurring practice (in your life) for you.

Friend, I have been places only the Lord could carry me away from with some semblence of a heart. You speak the truth. It never happens just once...he continues to break and mould as required.

I'm enjoying his blessings and continue to marvel at all the imperfections he finds.

So have I, and he did it in spades.

You also said:

Right on friend.

Doubt is not such a bad thing,...... its usually what drives us deepest into God.

Being confident is another story, the line between confidence and pride is very thin.

I've come to find that the safest way is to have no expectations of anything. Just act out of obedience and trsut God that no matter what He will bring good out of it.

But this does not mean that all things done are good in the sense of life vs. death. Fact is, scripture tells us that we can give death to another person.

Be clear about this, if everything we did was "good" (because God will bring good out of everything) then what need will there be for our own (believer's) judgement?

Doubt out of a disposition of unrighteous fear is wickedness against God, doubt out of righteous fear is reverence of God.

We see dimly at the moment, which means we have a hard time seeing. Therefore, never trust yourself and what you see, trust God.

Which is what His word to us is all about.

And there's nothing about Christmas in His word.

In fact, Christmas is not about trusting God but about trusting ourselves.

cj

I sense what you're trying to say CJ, I'm just not that cynical. I still have many more faults to reckon with however.

I actually had a conversation with my mother recently about my sudden change of heart, and she tried to tarnish what was good and pure with the hazards of such actions. In the end I had to tell her I felt like she was taking something wonderful Jesus had shown me and trying to twist my heart into focussing on the enemy.

I do have an issue with pride (vs confidence) because that's what tends to happen when you've been trodden on as a child. When you're old enough to start defending yourself however pride becomes a real issue. God has made me aware of this and he continues to do so.

I suspect you have an issue with Christmas though. Nothing sinister in your intentions - you just haven't found any evidence to support celebrating his birthday. Maybe there is none? Maybe it's just another Pagan holiday dressed up as something holy?

Christmas is here to stay however - like the enemy and like the poor - they will be with us always. What you do with it determines what Christmas can actually achieve to defy the enemy and help the poor.

Do you want to know my favourite memory of Christmas this year? It was over breakfast Christmas morning and our two and a half year old daughter started to sing "happy birthday baby Jesus." We told her that it was baby Jesus's birthday and she knows the birthday song - so rather spontaneously she started to sing "happy birthday baby Jesus." She still walks around the house - even after Christmas - singing happy birthday to baby Jesus.

From the mouth of babes comes praise. And that to me, is the joy of it all. :D
