diabetic thread

That's not it. Fruits actually have carbohydrates in the form of a natural sugar called fructose. Fructose is a type of sugar that has a low glycemic index. In other words its a complex carb so it does not digest as fast as processed sugars and less likely going to cause major spikes in blood glucose levels. Many fruits also contain good amounts of fiber which also slows digestion and helps keep glucose levels more steady. It's still important to count the carbohydrates in fruit as a diabetic diet plan.

In any case, certain things may affect different people differently. One person may see a significant rise in glucose from eating potatoes while another person not so much, for example.
The doctors I watch say there is little from fruits you can't get elsewhere. Berries are the safest. Store bought fruit juices are terrible.

Yes, fruit juice is extremely high in sugars because all of the pulp has been removed and that is where the fiber comes from.

I hear you on the complications with your feet. In July 2011 my doctor commented that my blood glucose was elevated a little so "we should keep an eye on it." Six months later in February 2012 my glucose was over 350 and he said I was type II and prescribed Metformin. I also noticed about that same time that my feet had this numb sensation but my doctor didn't think it was related to my glucose because it hadn't been elevated very long yet. We had a neurologist have a look and he said I suffered from diabetes nerve damage. That damage was actually done in about two months time. To this day my feet are numb down the center on top and bottom from my three middle toes to my shins. I have to be extra careful when I am outside in cold weather because its not so easy to know when my feet are getting cold. I also am very uncomfortable walking barefoot anymore so I must wear slippers indoors and loose fitting shoes outdoors. Damage can be done quicker than people realize.
My feet were numb/tingling/itching. Keto diet reversed much of it. Swelling also greatly reduced.

I have mild neuropathy. My dr says it will go away when my sugars are more in control. Mostly it's just random pins and needles sensations in my hands and feet.

Interesting. How do you make overnight oatmeal.

My wife recently purchased a different kind of oatmeal from Bob's Red Mill. It's not made with rolled oats but from steel cut oats. It is oats that are just chopped up so it has a nuttier texture and it takes longer to cook. I like it. Something different.

If there is one thing I hate about oatmeal, it how bland it can be. When ever used to I have it, it had to have brown sugar or maple syrup. But, trying to cut back or cut out dressings and such, I learned to use fruits and berries for flavor. I would dice up some grapefruit and throw it on top of my salad with some blue berries instead of a dressing. I would add mandarin oranges to my bitter greens. I felt free to get creative with my foods.

So the oatmeal...
I take a Ball Jar, use a 1/4 cup of rolled oats, then I add 1 Tablespoon of the steel cut oats. Helps make it chewier. Then I add a teaspoon of Stevia sweetener. To mix and change things things up, I'll also add in a teaspoon of either flaxseed, chia seed or hulled hemp. I'll add in either a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon or pumpkin spice. Sometimes I'll also add in a 1/4 teaspoon of either cumin or caraway seed. Gives it some unique flavors. I soak that overnight in unsweetened vanilla almond milk. In the morning, I'll put it in a bowl, throw on a few pieces of walnuts, add a dollop of Whole Fat plain greek yogurt, then either a 1/4 cup of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, sometimes pomegranate, kiwi....
For a special treat, I'll even sprinkle on a few cocoa nibs.

With the seeds and nuts and yogurt, I found it to be a very healthy breakfast with about equal portions (calories) of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. I would often not even be very hungry by lunchtime, and it typically only elevated my blood sugar by about 20 points or so.

Then you have no more excuses. Today is your day to start making it happen!!! WIP testimony should be absolutely encouraging to you. If he has been able to get and maintain his A1C level in the 5 range where he has without the medication. That is absolutely AWESOME!!! I manage to get mine down to 6.0 and then I maintained it around 6.1 for a few years. Last fall when I did my blood work it had climbed back up to 6.7.

WIP, you are an inspiration.

Be careful with that grapefruit.
It can counteract some blood pressure meds.

Did my logs today and took both sets of meds. Blood sugar was really high this morning, but that may be partly because I literally took it right after I ate breakfast. (Forgot to take it before.) I had some instant oatmeal for breakfast--it didn't have a ton of sugar according to the packaging, but it did have a little. It also had raisins, dates, and walnuts in it.
Blood sugar this evening two or three hours after I ate some chicken at work was 140.

I always check my blood-sugar before I eat, but I am on a sliding scale of insulin injection and need to know where I am "at" before injecting enough insulin to compensate for the next meal.
Like I said earlier, it may be easier for Type 1 diabetics to maintain control than Type 2s.

Bits and pieces of info I pick up.....stay away from beef that is not grass fed. It should say on the package "grass fed". This keeps hormones and anti-biotics away. Eat only cage free chicken/eggs to avoid the same.

The Keto diet celebrates its 100th year as it was developed in 1921 for the treatment for epilepsy. It was moderately effective, but was de-emphasized when antiseizure meds were developed (big pharma wins again).

Sugars running very high the past few days.....

Don't forget how important exercise is too. Even just walking around the block will increase heart rate.
I just got my last A1C results...up from 6.6 to 6.8.?
I hope it is just because it is the winter.
I'm going to cut out my daily mini-M&Ms for lunch too....
I've been type-one for so long I can see the differences in seasons.
I think I will shop some yard-sales this week and look for some exercise equipment that is being ignored after getting it for Christmas.
I wouldn't mind having a tread mill or rowing machine...in front of my TV.?

Uh, so I cheated today. My blood sugar is super high now. Heck.

I have been taking my meds at least once a day (I sometimes forget to in the morning), and I have been keeping my log as well.

Do two fast walking laps around your house and wait ten minutes. Then recheck the blood/sugar reading.
At least you will know what two fast laps, and the increase in heart rate, can do for your readings from now on.
If it lowered your BS numbers by, say, "forty"...you will know the scale of reduction to lower it by "eighty" or "a hundred and twenty".
Know what I mean??
