Well, God only preferred a tent to start with because there was really no place yet for His Son to rest His head in. Israel would have to be on the move until they landed in the Promised Land. Then they could have something more permanent. As it pertains to a third temple, you are that temple. It is written that my father prefers a tent, not a house of stone, which is why they erected tabernacles. You are that tabernacle made without hands, a curtain of flesh, a mansion in a house with many mansions. But there are many who have let their hearts turn to stone.
Currently yes, we are that tent on the move. We've received Christ but we still haven't arrived yet. They can burn down tents and destroy stone buildings in the present age. But they can't take away our hope locked safely away in heaven with Christ.
Yes, societies age just like individuals--the decline may only take longer, as the leaven spreads out and leavens the whole lump. The First Temple, Solomons Temple was dedicated with the all consuming fire from heaven. That Temple stood for approximately 400 years in duration before the temple was destroyed in God's judgement against them by the Babylonians.
Books like Haggai and Ezra contributed some information to the building of the 2nd Temple. And it was specifically acknowledged that it was inferior to Solomon's Temple. And yet it would see the Messiah, which made it special. The Second Temple stood for about 420 years or so before it too was destroyed in God's Judgement against them by the Romans. I don't recall the second temple receiving the same type of dedication as the first, as the first Temple was dedicated for all of Israel. The Second Temple was not so, as the northern tribes had already been scattered abroad.
Keep in mind that the restoration of Israel after the Babylonian Captivity called the people "Jews," because the predominant tribe in the South which was returning was Judah. But Judah is where the Temple was. And being that the northern tribes dedicated different and foreign gods for their worship, many from all of the tribes migrated to Judah if they wanted to stay true to the God of Israel.
The restoration of Israel, therefore, restored all 12 tribes, although the tribes, as territories, ceased to exist. And many who were deported were lost forever among the nations.
The long duration of a non-Jewish temple in Jerusalem indicates that what Jesus said was true. Israel would see Jerusalem fall in his generation, which would lead to an age-long "Great Tribulation."Meantime, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock has stood for more than 1300 years consecutive, more than 3 times the duration of either of the Jewish Temples.
This was, Jesus said, a *Jewish Punishment.* It would be the worst in Israel's history for its long duration. But God will still be faithful, even to a thousand generations.
