He was slain, in God's eyes, before Adam and Eve sinned. So, the Lord had, already, made provision for everyone of us - the Old Testament saints, as well as the New Testament saints, and all those who follow Him.

We should be looking at the Lamb in the midst of the throne... Revelation 5:6
We should be hearing the blood speaking from the new Jerusalem above...Hebrews 12:24

They looked forward to the reigning of a temporal Messiah on the throne in an earthly Jerusalem.

Jesus is the Messiah, and He is not temporal, He is eternal.

He will reign in the New Jerusalem.
