Grammar and this Generation

Scootaloo,

I too, took AP Language and Composition (but not AP Literature & I don't know what IB is:sad ) Would you say thought that in AP Language and Composition, more focus was placed on the student's ability to read through prompts and analyze them, rather than actual writing?

Mike, I understand that your son's grammar issues are a bit confusing seeing as he's taking a college-level course, but there are different levels of students in AP: maybe your son was smart enough to get into AP English, which is great, but English isn't necessarily "his thing"...? Scootaloo scored very high on his AP tests (two 5's); the highest you can get. I received a 4 on my AP test and I still had to take English in college :grumpy Three quarters of it! I wouldn't worry so much about the grammar right now; like you said, he's a bright kid, otherwise he wouldn't even be in that class.

Her AP tests. I'm a girl. How can you not see this from my avatar and sig?

How you no see I am girl pony?

Anyway, IB stands for International Baccalaureate, which basically is European University level stuff. It's head and shoulders above AP, so if you can take any IB classes in high school, I highly suggest you to do so. In my Composition class, yes, I had to analyze literature, but I also had to do a serious amount of writing.

Hah! :oops I honestly wasn't paying attention to your avatar/sig..my deepest apologies.

You know what I mean...:sad

Sure.

I was trying to tell him to take that quote seriously and understand the truth in it.

(the 'sorry' was just a joke. I deliberately called him 'mic' and pretending to be remorseful then called him 'Mike'):lol

besides he doesn't sing, he doesn't deliver speeches. No need giving him a mic:chin

It took a while to lear how to read your posts Jason . Your form of writing is an endearment to me. You write like you talk, one of the things i loved about reading Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn's books. Your form, willingness to post, gave me some confidence to post. A year + ago most of what i posted was some form of copy and paste..
I KNEW it was his fault

Mike, Mic... whatever... I've been called much worse. :lol Classik, how do you know I don't sing or give speeches? Our kids would agree with the former, but they'd really disagree with the latter. :)

I understand kids can have different strengths and aptitudes, but not having having the ability to write will be a setback for people. Right or wrong, people in the professional world draw conclusions based on how you present yourself on paper or in email. I'm trying to direct the discussion toward this skill set as it relates to this generation as opposed to my son. I really think it has deteriorated from past ones. Of course, my parents might say the same thing about mine.

Of course, my parents might say the same thing about mine.

At time the standards most parents set are way too high for their children.

For what reasons should a kid spend over 7 hours at school? These are kids below the age of 4. I figured out some parents are lazy (sorry to say), they leave responsibilities to the teachers.

I used Joshua to make my point that even above-average students can't write papers. Yes, there are exceptions. If a teen goes beyond the HS curriculum or even just meets the criteria to go to college, the premise is that they've been prepared for college or the work force. I can't imagine college students writing papers full of errors. They would have sent me home! More so, succeeding in most careers requires that you can write with correct grammar. It's important to land the job in the first place.

Outside of school or work, I don't have a problem with it, but I do think it's a bad habit to get into. I just can't imagine what this generation will do when they find themselves in careers. :shrug
I'm starting uni this year, so I'll tell you if they are hard on grammar. I'm really not sure. And of course there a jobs where proper grammar is essential.

But...my last point was about the overall changing culture and it will happen, no doubt. My guess is that your parents' generation said the same thing about your generation as you are saying to the current teen generation.

To be honest, even in the workplace I see communication as essential. If clear communication that people understand is achieved, whether this includes proper grammar or not, I don't mind.

I love this video. Quite appropriate. :D

Mike from one who never could learn it although i tried.. I would suggest a gentle push for Joshua, have him get what ever he can form the English classes... I have had to deal with the embarrassment of not knowing how to spell words while writing out checks in a public place.. Be his dad a good gentle push to be his best wont hurt him.. Do remember not every one can excel in language. It has stopped me from doing all sorts of things jobs, even postings here....

Reba, you didn't use laptops with Microsoft Word that underlines misspelled words in red and grammar errors in green. No one in our generation grew up with this advantage that basically holds your hand through a paper.

Folks, let's please get this puppy on the topic of this generation.

As a whole, does this younger generation not value and practice proper English in the written word?

Isn't shorthand awesome?

This generation may not be ready to use the words they use today in print.

Thanks Danus i love it.

I remember a Twilight Zone from years back. The guy was from the future and speaking English. His sentences seemed run together. He used a number for a standard sentence. Sorta spoke in a 'shorthand". I see this coming in real life... As in: many use (as soon as possible) ASAP as a word. Many use night or nite, lite or light inter changeably . I think Mike's concern is right on. The proper written word is going the way of penmanship.

text be dat der descandent frum dat der shorthand.:yes

Well, I agree to some extent. I think it's important though to study language with culture. The generation today will one day bash the next generation for something they feel is being lost, just as the generation before us did.

That said, Mike I have a new profile picture for you.

:toofunny....don't get mad buddy; I'm just picking on you! :)

Danus, I have no idea what a picture of Meryl Streep is supposed to suggest, so I'm not mad! It doesn't make me mad enough to stick something in the grass so if you drive over our property border, you get whacked somehow. I know this doesn't make sense to others who are reading, but I know you understand. :p
