My mom helped a homeless person and paid for them to go to a doctor, which enabled them to apply for disability.
She ruined our financial security to do it as it cost thousands of $$, but it's hard to feel upset when it helped someone who genuinely needed it.
She says God told her to

1. been homeless one time for 6 months - thank God i had a hatchback car and a prepaid fitness pass - worked out and showered each morning before work and slept in my car in a truck stop parking lot at night - bought groceries daily to eat

2. bought a small revenue property and lived in the tiny basement apartment and rented out the largest part of the house- it paid my mortgage and utilities - lost my job shortly after buying the property and didn't want to be homeless again so i rationed the eating of all the food in my cupboard and freezer for 6 months because i had no money for food - lost a lot of weight but God helped me get my first business supernaturally after 6 months

3. i have talked to a lot of homeless people :

i was surprised to find some don't want to take advantage of programs - they prefer to live as they do - even eating out of dumpsters - they feel the freedom is worth being homeless

some homeless collected aid from programs by using a relative's address - but really they were living on the street - and using the program money for food and cigarettes and alcohol and cell phones

some homeless people had misfortunes and did take advantage of any help available until they got back on their feet - they were trying to get back on their feet asap

some homeless were clearly mentally disturbed and i wasn't able to have a decent conversation with them so i don't know their story - how they lived or what their dreams/goals were - some were violent and some were shy/scared /avoided people

Some people are not willing to help themselves or even accept help. It all depends on the individuals situation.

The long run homeless tend to have some sort of physical, emotional, or mental disability. Sometimes they exacerbate the situation by trying to self medicate with street drugs/alcohol, or pushers take advantage of their disability to get them hooked. They have no ability to self medicate with something safe and effective in the USA, and can't afford a system that is far more expensive than every other country in the world.

The short run homeless are often there for some factor outside of their control (e.g., the business they work for goes chapter 7). Eventually they get back on their feet. Lots of people were in this situation during the Great Depression, which is one reason why safety net programs became popular. A couple of months of unemployment insurance can tide people over till they get another job.

A few fully functional people are homeless by choice. However, they seldom choose a cardboard box in an alley. They do things like convert vans into makeshift mobile homes, or move to areas where they are allowed to build their own shanty (non code).

Im thinking of going homeless, not like homeless in a box homeless, but live out the back of a van. I want out of the brainwashed system. No rent, no debt, no bills. I will get a van and can sleep in the back and just travel around and go fishing and chiill out and then do a couple months seasonal work each year to get some funds.

I don't think apples grow so well in Alabam (a certain argumentative poster contended we could never get enough agricultural laborers in Alabama, so I joked about your "seasonal work" comment, since that's what the phrase usually means here)

I dont know what the solution is. More charity maybe. There would be more Jobs and charity if tax was very low for both business and employees. But I doubt that would happen.

You're kidding, right? Do you REALLY think the super rich who already get all the tax breaks would donate their excess to charities? Not a chance! The ONLY way to do it is by taxation...and if raising my taxes by 3 percent or so would assure universal food, shelter, education, clothing and healthcare for all, I'd pay it in a minute. Also, charities can discriminate and not have issues with it...so they can refuse LGBTQ+. different races, different religions...and I am utterly opposed to that.

However, as long as some people are just fine with people dying due to lack of food, shelter or medical care, it'll never, ever happen. It disgusts me that most of those who oppose these things claim to be followers of Christ and claim to be "pro-life". They can't see the problem with that and I just want to grab them, shake them and ask them to wake up!

I am not happy to pay more tax as it takes away money I need just to get by, eat, pay utilities, and get essentials. But that is my own circumstance and issue.

I dont think many systems work well. Real charity is individual charity otherwise by the time it gets to the people in need for the cause there is only crumbs left.

Many rich would prefer to tax the poor to fund the military plus police, and almost nothing else. They think its only fair for everybody to pay the same $5000 per year, regardless of income. The poor can't afford to support the world's most expensive military, or expensive drug wars. The poor would prefer to bring the troops home, and use their taxes for social services like national health care and Social Security. The poor are just getting by, and notice that some services are more inexpensively provided by government. National health care in Europe/Canada/Australia/Japan is far cheaper than the US system. The majority there have better outcomes and longevity.

Slab City is alright. One dude there said he was insane and even had the paper work, yet he was more sane than many people are these days. He was just chilling out in peace having a good time.

Then you need to either connect to the local water supply or dig a well and either have a septic field put in or connect to the local sewer lines...that ain't cheap.

Y'all all need to wake up and get real about the world we live in, especially here in the USA. There's a shortage of affordable housing to start. We won't discuss the people who die because they can't afford medications. If you ain't lived it, then you are not going to have a clue as to what the issues are. You can keep your little self-righteous attitudes and think it'll never happen to you but it can happen to anyone...even people who just a few years before were pulling down close to 6 figures a year.
