I was shocked!!!

There was a time I saw a pastor and his friends (in the pastor's house) gulping bottles of alcohol. They were merrily drinking and chatting exceitedly...as if it was a holy communion service. I was indeed shocked. They probably consumed a ton of alcohol that day.

There is a verse that says: A priest should not take alcohol. And pastors are like priests - everybody is a priest.

A' chatty' holy communion service would be shocking.

I'll let someone else remind you of the wedding at Cana.

This really only has to do with moderation. Was this pastor actually drunk? How much did you actually see him drink? I do not think it is wrong for anyone to embibe in alcoholic as long as they are doing so to get drunk, or if it is feeding some sort of habit.

We have to be very careful about judging, especially fellow Christians, if we do not know that whole story.

How long will we kid ourselves about alcoholic consumption in the church?

I've seen it cause more trouble than any 'good' that someone thinks it is for them. People so sure they can control it fall into the very trouble they were so sure they would not let themselves fall into using it. What a joke.

Aren't you both taking a bit too legalistic view on this? Sure, a pastor is supposed to be an example, pretty much at all times, but they are also allowed to relax at times. Again, if the pastor was embibing yet not actually getting drunk, then I see no problem with this. But, if they are getting drunk, then even bigger questions would need to be asked.

Not all churches hold a strong stand against having a small amount of wine or beer. I am not legalistic about it but I sure don't encourage it in our alcohol driven society. I do think the clergy and church leadership--deacons and elders, teachers etc.--should set an example and not cause weaker brothers to stumble. Holiness churches are especially horrified to see wine used in communion or a pastor smoke a pipe.

What that really got me scared and shocked was the level of enthusiasm they had as they chatted and drank plus the number of big bottles present.

If they weren't getting drunk then why are you making a big deal about it?

And we wonder why people think Christians are obnoxious....

What were they chatting enthusiastically about? Were they enthusiastically proclaiming their faith and Love of our LORD? If you don't know beware glass houses and judging.
As a guy who has struggled with alcohol up until recently, I find it quite a relief that some pastors know all too well the dangers and pitfalls of alcohol through experience. There is nothing to be gained by being hollier than thou or more pious towards an addict when you haven't experienced something.
I do agree that as long as the pastor is not feeding a habit or corrupting the morals of the other people in the "session" there is no real harm except to over zealous members of the congregation and their sensitivities.
There are many instances of moderate alcohol consumption in His Word and they are tempered with examples of the consequences of abuse.

And they could have just been having a great time in fellowship.

great time? Maybe!! Fully charged? What got them charged up.

by this statement you have just admitted you don't know what they were enthusiastically discussing!

Would the egg be on your face if you found they were proclaiming their Love for Jesus while imbibing of something that God has provided since the dawn of creation?

On that day, dad went to preach in a supermarket. They had a bar. The people who were drinking said to him: Christ turned water into wine:dunno :confused :shrug

By that statement I meant: what else wou'd
