I'M OLD!!!

I once worked for this rich old man i know for a day, he needed a hand to do some gardening around the place. I called him 'Sir' and he got all offended and straight away said you call me John, because he respected me as an equal.

Yup, I agree with the old man. We are all equals. At school I don't let my students call me "Kru Paul", "ajarn Paul" or "teacher Paul'. They are told on the first day of each school year "My name is Paul. Use it" It makes for a very relaxed learning atmosphere and the kids approach with questions a lot more once that barrier is removed.
Using someones name is not a sign of disrespect unless the intonation of your voice indicates it.
A lot problems arise in the world because people feel they are entitled to be treated as or that they feel they are in fact "Superior" to others and that's where the use of titles comes from.
That being said, in the services and service occupations, it has to be used for disciplinary reasons and lack of familiarity respectively.
The only exception for me will be when I face our Lord for judgement as He is the only one superior to me, yet He is not superior, HE IS SUPREME!

Getting back on track though, yes, it does make me feel even older hearing it. oh, wait a minute, I AM old. Darn it!
Sorry for the derailing.

Well,no I do not attend a gym.My hair is cut short and I do not color it and I do not wear makeup.I am a very plain person.Maybe I am a young lady at heart :)

I guess this is you in your avatar that you now have! (Maybe with 'Bobby' that you mentioned on the other thread...) I guess the photo was taken before your hair Chop... :)

My wife did The Chop years ago...

(With the passage of the years, some of us haven't got enough hair even to chop...)

Blessings.

The personal title for boys is "Master". Other personal titles include: young man, young lady, young fellow (pronounced 'fella') and, of course, Mister, Miss, Master & Mistress. The personal title "Ms" (pronounced Miz) did not come into use until the 20th century.

I often call women 'Ms' Whoever....

I'm a guy! Don't call me "ma'am".

Are there any military people here? Is it true, as I've heard, that female officers are addressed as "sir"?

Hm, I probably enjoyed that. :)

*cough* So calling a guy "Ma'am" is a reason for beating someone over the head with a chair, while adressing female officers as "sir" may be normal among the military? Why that double standard?

I don't know if maybe Star Trek was inspired by realistic American military customs. Female Star Fleet officers can be adressed as both Sir or Ma'am or can chose which one they prefere.

Today some guy in his 20's said to me-
wait for it-
"Yes Ma'am"
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I'm only 29 I have 2 months left of it!
LOL

Time does not seem to have merit. :)

No matter what you do, you will be 39. And when you look past, 10 years is not different from 1 day. This is how time works. So time here is really for the purpose, as I think.

Ms Kathi: okay, from the other thread, I stand corrected about the mysterious Mr Bobby... :)

Blessings.

You enjoy being hit over the head with a folding chair? I could make a comment about that, but I think I'll skip it.

It's not my standard to call women "sir". It's the military that does that, and I've never been (or even wanted to be) in the military. I would never call a woman "sir".

Yes sir, ma'am!

Hey TOG, you sound old!

the navy isn't a military, its a bunch of guys on a boat on a first name basis.

They also talk funny. They say "aye" when they mean "yes" and sometimes skip about every other letter in a word, like saying "fo'c's'le'" instead of "forecastle". That's probable originally English. They seem to have a tendency to skip entire syllables from many words.
