Bible Study Is It Anything About The Sabbath That We Must Know?

Any thoughts on what that rest might consist of?

I really do not know what God’s rest is, or what it will consist of. I can only think it is the opposite of this:
Rev 14:9-13 GNB A third angel followed the first two, saying in a loud voice, "Those who worship the beast and its image and receive the mark on their forehead or on their hand (10) will themselves drink God's wine, the wine of his fury, which he has poured at full strength into the cup of his anger! All who do this will be tormented in fire and sulfur before the holy angels and the Lamb. (11) The smoke of the fire that torments them goes up forever and ever. There is no relief day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, for anyone who has the mark of its name." (12) This calls for endurance on the part of God's people, those who obey God's commandments and are faithful to Jesus.

But rather this, following on from that where we read in verse 13
Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this: Happy are those who from now on die in the service of the Lord!" "Yes indeed!" answers the Spirit. "They will enjoy rest from their hard work because the results of their service go with them."

Which I sort of summarise as contentment. I was hoping for something more exciting, but contentment and peace will do for me. The Hastings Bible Dictionary says:
“Christ's "rest" is the harmonious working of all the faculties and affections—of will, heart, imagination, conscience—because each has found in God the ideal sphere for its satisfaction and development"

Do you have any thoughts?

Hi Cooper, On which day are you saying is the seventh day?

Walter
As you will know words can have several meanings and unfortunately the word 'day' is one of them. The Hebrew word for day is yome and it can mean anything from a few hours, to eternity.

We measure a day by the sun, but the sun and the moon only appeared on day four, so to cut a long story short, a day of creation is best described as an epoch.

Here are some examples of the word day in context.
1Ki_9:3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. (yome)

1Ki_12:7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, (yome) and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. (yome)

Gen_6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (yome)

Psalms 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (yome) I really hope that 'for ever' does not mean twenty four hours.

It takes millions of years before we see the light from the stars, so that gives us an idea of how long creation took. So on what do we base the Sabbath Day? We certainly cannot base it on the days of creation.

We understand what you are saying, but what is the day that you worship? Friday at Sunset until Saturday at Sunset or any Day, or every day, or do you accept Jesus as your rest?

But as far as us we have studied the scriptures, and just lately:

Sunday 8-28-22 1st. Day Of The Weekly Cycle, Av 29 5782 69th. Summer Day

Hebrews Four:1-16

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Christ Is Superior In His Position

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Love, Walter and Debbie.

Every day is the Lord's Day for me. Paul said somewhere to pray continuously and that is what I do. The Lord is continually in my thoughts. Every moment of every day is His.

Hebrews 4:4
God did rest the seventh day — a rest not ending with the seventh day, but beginning then and still continuing, into which believers shall hereafter enter. God’s rest is not a rest necessitated by fatigue, nor consisting in idleness, but is that upholding and governing of which creation was the beginning [Alford]. Hence Moses (in Genesis) records the end of each of the first six days, but not of the seventh. (Jamison-Fausset-Brown)

The seventh is eternal with the Lord. This is when our work on earth is ended and we meet with Jesus face to face eternally. So don't worry about the seventh day, it has not happened yet. Just keep praising God (That's me) :)

Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Is this the same as the day of rest when we are finally with the Lord?

Mar 2:23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
Mar 2:24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Mar 2:25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
Mar 2:26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
Mar 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

I think we might be talking about two different sabbath rest.

Yes, I think it is the same Sabbath that we have been talking about because from what we have studied, each day represents His plan of salvation for us, and it is a foreshadowing of things to come when Christ return.

We will discuss the scriptures about our eternal rest later, ok? or do you know already?

Love, Walter

Oops, my bad I was directing that to Cooper

Yes I already know about the eternal rest and can hardly wait.

Jesus is "Lord of the Sabbath" Matthew 12:8 and we can find our rest in His finished work.

Jesus has done it all. He has secured the salvation of all those who believe in Him, and follow Him, all the days of our life putting an end to the work-based religion's whereby we can rest in His everlasting love, secure in Him.
May God bless.

Clark's Commentary

Verse Matthew 12:8 (NAS)

8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
The Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath-day. — The change of the Jewish into the Christian Sabbath, called the Lord's day, Revelation 1:10 (NAS)
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet,
shows that Christ is not only the Lord, but also the truth and completion of it. For it seems to have been by an especial providence that this change has been made and acknowledged all over the Christian world.

Wonderful, and these promises are for us living in the seventh day. It has been like a revelation for me, even though intellectually I have always known these things.
For to us, a child is born, to us, a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa 9:6 ESV)

You (the Lord) will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. (Isa 26:3-4 ESV)

Further, we read: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Php 4:6-7 ESV)

Jesus told us, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (Joh 14:27 ESV)

These promises are for us now and I remember a hymn we sometimes sing, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace."

Over the past few years, I have been watching the television less and less, not reading newspapers and gradually shutting out the things of the world while enjoying my walks with the dog in the beautiful countryside near where I live and pursuing harmless hobbies like playing computer chess and gardening etc. Gradually without realising it the things of the world have grown strangely dim. No longer do I listen to the news or read the newspapers that are full of dreadful worrying things. Much better to focus on the good things in life, while being a good neighbour, and so it is with the promises of God, on whom we can cast all our cares and worries and claim his promises, in this, the seventh day of the Lord. May God bless.

Thank you rstrats for the conversation.

With our new High Priest, Jesus Christ, then the same but with a new Sabbath day in this the new dispensation."

Not sure what you mean by a new Sabbath day unless you are talking about the difference between the Sabbath offering as in the Temple found in Numbers 28:9-10 that the Priest offered and now on this side of the new dispensation of God's grace through Christ Jesus in whom is now our High Priest in which we have our rest in Him.

Num 28:9 And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof:
Num 28:10 This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.

Mat 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Mat 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Mat 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
Mat 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Mar 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was thinking about the early Christians who made the transition from Saturday to Sunday worship due in part to Jesus replacing Melchizedek as the new High Priest, and also due to the fact that Sunday is the day Jesus rose from the grave. So for Christians, Sunday worship replaced the Saturday Synagogue, due to us living in a new dispensation.

Another thing is that on the Jewish Sabbath they made burnt offerings as a sin offering, Matt 12v7 in your post, when Christ's once for all sacrifice on the cross made all that unnecessary. Besides which, it was an awful insult to the finished work of Christ, whose one sacrifice is sufficient for all time.

I only hope we are not talking at cross purposes. I have had a sleep since I spoke to you yesterday, so I shall bid you good night, and ask God's blessing on you. :)
