We just concluded a class. One of the sub topics treated was speaking in tongues. So, how should a Christian speak in tongues?

Some teach how to speak. Some memorise the sound. Some write it down. Some scream, they are heard as far as Gaza.

1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

I think it would be awesome to speak in tongues. It's never happened to me though. I knew an evangelist type once that we used to home study together. He could speak in tongues on demand and did several times. I don't home study with him anymore.

I can speak in tongues anytime I want.
I can sing in tongues.
I can think in tongues.
So can my wife.

I've given testimonies before on my tongues.
God doesn't take away a gift he gives you.

The Corinthian church was speaking in tongues at will, that's why the confusion.
Paul instructed an orderly worship with it.

If I didn't tell someone I spoke in tongues, no one would know.
If I am praying and know not what to say, I pray in tongues.

It just comes to me as it should for anyone who has the gift.

Sometimes I should pray in tongues before I come on this forum so I wouldn't get myself in trouble.

I have been speaking and praying in tongues for, Well a few years. Are you sure your class was about "Real" Gift of the spirit tongues available to every believer?

Doing it on demand would be speaking for the Holy Spirit...

Jesus said they that believe on My name SHALL, speak in new tongues.......... They shall. The Holy Spirit is always there, always ready to meet our faith.

Paul said I am glad "I" pray in tongues more than you all.

In the 9 gifts used for the Church however, Paul said one should be known to interpret and keep things decent and in order. So in that case it would be by the direction of the Holy Spirit.

At home though, pray away.

Blessings

Mike.

I have never had problems with the tongues thing. However what that really gets me worried is when someone shouts it into my ears. I lose concentration. At times I could begin to imagine: Did he just mention a German word or was that Chineese? Kind of Esperanto??? Etc.

Another important question is: at what point should one speak? Is it instantaneously? Some speak even before they begin praying. A lot of things happen that get me very worried.

The Apostles prayed for a while before they were able to speak in tongues.

It's not the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues through the believer? Do you know what you are saying when you do it?

We receive the Holy Spirit and then we speak in tongues.
It is a "sign" that we have received the Holy Spirit.

It is the power of the Holy Spirit that we speak in tongues.
It is the power of the Holy Spirit that we are given a word to share with others.
It is the power of the Holy Spirit that we pray for a healing and we see the healing.
It is the power of the Holy Spirit that we teach or preach sound scripture to others.

We do God's will through the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives just as we pray everything in the name of Jesus.

One of the speakers at camp this summer said they were witnessing to someone who spoke Spanish, and didn't understand English at all. They are talking to this women in her language without even realizing it at first, even though they didn't know Spanish.

Now this was at a baptist camp. A lot of baptist churches are rather critical of speaking in tongues--at least my childhood church was.

If you ever spoke Prophecy, it's just like that. It does not come from your head. One thing amazing about tongues is that you can pray in tongues and write something or even focus on something else. You can't do that using English as Tongues comes from your spirit man.

So, being like prophecy (Which takes a lot more faith to operate speaking something you understand as The Holy Spirit speaks to you, without getting your head or understanding in the way) Tongues is a language just like our language. We have to do the speaking though just like speaking prophecy.

Spiritual things, like natural things are practiced. So I can jump instantly into speaking in tongues now because I have learned to get myself out of the way in an instant. I just speak without thought and the words just come.

Do you know what you are saying when you do it?

Nope............. Paul said he speaks in tongues and pray for the understanding, He sings in tongues and prays for the understanding. Tongues we speak mysteries to God (Well, to us anyway) And the Holy Speaks on those things back to us he hears. The Holy Spirit does not speak of his own but connects us directly.

So tongues can move things, give you wisdom, change something. Often weeks later something happens and the Holy Spirit alerts me of the time I was praying in tongues. By that I have the interpretation in the form of something happened.

For me, I always just pray in Tongues because I can only cover a situation with natural thinking and there are a whole lots of things I don't know.

Tongues is often the times we hear God directly also in a language we understand. If prompted to pray, I pray in tongues until I get that release. At times I will see something and get an idea what I am praying for.

Well....................... Sort of..................

I can tell if someone is filled with the Spirit of God, just being around them (If they have not let carnal things suck all the anointing out of their day) Even at Work I passed a table I was serving and just stopped and told the guy I could feel the Spirit of God on him. (Turned out he was a Pastor) You just know.

It's very possible to be filled with the Spirit of God and not speak in tongues. I have run into those cases also. It's a matter of Word instruction and help, you don't have to Ask for the Power and witness of the Holy Spirit again for them.

Lots of folks Are filled with the Holy Spirit but been taught wrong about tongues. It only comes when you get all emotionalized up enough to get your flesh out of the way. NO, it's a operation by faith, not some spiritualed up feeling.

It's still knowing the Truth about something that Makes us free.

That is very common, never happened to me, but It does happen a lot. There are Baptist Pastors that do speak in tongues, they just don't tell anyone.

Well, I agree with you.
But scripture tells us that speaking in tongues is a sign of receiving the Holy Spirit.

I don't know what I am saying, but when I speak in tongues I feel in my Spirit that I am praising God.

Well, I agree with you.
But scripture tells us that speaking in tongues is a sign of receiving the Holy Spirit.

If you read it, it was the after effect of the Holy Spirit coming on them.

Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Here is some folk in this scripture that believed on Jesus, were Baptized, but not filled with the Spirit of Power. The reason is they never even heard about the Holy Spirit. Saved, believed on Jesus, Were Baptized, just nobody told them.

More than half the Church World today is Saved, but no power. The Lights are off because nobody cares enough to take the time to expound on these things.

My Experience:

I was in Prison, so all I had were those Brothers that prayed in tongues around me at prayer time. I really did not know what to think about it being raised to understand all that stuff had passed away. (Thank you Baptist Church!!!)

The way I figured it though, to get the tongues I needed the Power of the Holy Spirit. I had read lots of books about Faith and just believing God, but I wanted more. I wanted a life filled with power, and the ability in me to help someone besides handing them a Jesus tract telling them that Jesus loves them.

I had this scripture here.

Luk_11:13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

So two conditions here....................... You must ask, and God must be Your father. That means born again before asking.

So, alone in my jail cell I asked for the Holy Spirit. Nothing happened, it was not like on TV where your suppose to fall down and come up speaking like your selling camels in Iraq. Zero, Nothing....... zip!!!

This went on for a few days and It was very disappointing, I just kept asking and waiting for the fireworks.

I read the scripture over and over to make sure I had all the steps in place. Then it dawned on me.

Jesus said, How much more will your father in heaven Give the Holy Spirit to those that ask?

If I had asked, I must be filled with the Holy Spirit and just not know it. Jesus would not have lied, right?

So I settled that, I told God I was never asking again for the Holy Spirit, a done deal. Not very satisfying but that is just how it was going to be. Jesus lied, or did not lie.

Tongues:

Now it was time for Tongues. I settled the Holy Spirit part, just need the tongues part. Everything God has, I want and not stopping until I get it. It's never the Word's fault, it's our lack of diligence and faith.

So, I stood in my cell with my mouth open for a few days at night and nothing happened. I was thinking that words were suppose to come out or something. So I read over Acts again to make sure I did not miss anything. (1st 4 chapters)

Then I say they spoke, the Holy Spirit does not make you speak. So I came up with a plan, I told God I was just going to speak tongues and that would be the tongues He would get. The first thing that came to mind was a movie called "Caveman"

So I figured that I would just pray Oggga Boggga and tried to fancy those up a bit. Boga, boga, janjinga.

It lasted about 5 seconds the first night, and I was just a big disappointment. Why was God not helping me here/?

Day 2:

It was prayer time again, I was going to pray in my new Tongues, I did get some better sounding Caveman out for about 10 seconds before tears came up in my eyes and I just went to bed. Why was everything so easy for others? I felt horrible.

Day 3 or 4...... 5 maybe?

I figured that if I had to make up caveman to pray in tongues, then I told God this is what He gets. I told him if he don't like that, then change it for me. As far as I was concerned, I spoke with new tongues and I was filled with the Holy Spirit. I purposed to pray Caveman for 30 minutes non stop.

So I started out with the Hooga Booga Wangjinga, and suddenly I felt this strange power, like liquid or something just rush through my body. (That never has happened before) And real language and words started to just flow from my mouth as I spoke them. The more I spoke the power seemed to increase and .................................

Mike Got scared!!!!

I stopped and did what every scared grown man does, I hide under my covers.

Under the covers this scripture came up......... "My soul takes no pleasure in those that draw back."

So I told the lord forgive me, but if those tongues come back, I'll never stop or draw back again.

The rest is History..................

Excellent Mike.

Also:

Acts 10:44-46;

"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

I see in the scripture where they were filled with the Holy Spirit and then spoke in tongues and some gave prophecy. My experience was not like that, but I see why now as the Lord was teaching me to walk by faith.

You mentioned praising God with tongues or like a praise.................. One time in a prayer circle I started to sing in tongues and everyone joined in. Same exact words, some everything. We started to laugh because the power of God was so strong and flesh was not dealing with it very well.

Your right, there is Joy there. Joy in the Holy Ghost.

Mike.
