This is the fourth "Word" of Jesus said from the cross.

Mathew 27:46 NASB
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

It is the only "Word" that appears in more than one gospel and is referring to Psalm 22.

But....Is it referring to Psalm 22?
Does it mean Jesus feels forsaken by the Father?
Was He betrayed by His own brethren and is expressing deep grief?

It seems to me that no one truly knows what Jesus meant when He cried out to God.

Opinions?
 
The message of the 22nd Psalm....

Things look bad now but wait for the ending...is that message. God will change the expected conclusion...and win.

God never left Jesus as he and the Father are one, John 10:30. In John 16:32 Jesus told his disciples they would leave him alone, but Jesus told them he is not alone for my Father is with me. 2 Corinthians 5:19 God was in Jesus reconciling the world to himself.

God never forsook Jesus while he hung on the cross as according to Hebrews 10:7-10 (read the whole Chapter) it was by the offering of the body of Jesus that once and for all we are sanctified through his offering for sin. Jesus was not made sin for us, but made a final offering for us to reconcile ourselves back to the Father as it was ordained by God in the beginning as his word became flesh to walk among us, John 1:1-5 until Jesus now sits at the right hand of God, Matthew 22:44.

Hebrews 13:5 says God will never leave us nor forsake us. God never forsook any of His prophets in the OT so why would He forsake Jesus while he hung on the cross. Psalms 22:1, 24 is prophetic fulfillment of Jesus making a proclamation to those Jews gathered at Golgotha that as David cried out to God in his hour of despair that God never left David and was right there with him and for all who calls on his name will never be alone as the Father will never leave His own.

The imagery is so clear.

Jesus had always called God, Father.

You said on the other post, that some believe He HID His face from Him, that He couldn't look upon sin.
Psa.22:24
Neither hath He HID His face from Him, but when He cried unto Him, He heard.

I was going to post it in here, but was having some issues with the computer. By the time I got back in here you had already posted it. Yes, there are a lot of opinions and hope the discussion goes well as we all remain pleasing to the Lord in what we speak.:)
 
Habakkuk 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Both these verses above shows that God did not forsake Christ while He hung on the cross, but that it grieved him at His heart that the world became so sinful that He had to give His only begotten Son to be the final blood sacrifice that through Him and those who come to Him would can have eternal life with the Father, John 3:16. This was God's divine plan in the beginning, even before the foundation of the world.

Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
Psalm 22:24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

God never forsook Jesus as deity can not be separated. Comparing the above verses in Psalms and Matthew Jesus was declaring to His accusers as He hung on the cross that they were in the midst of fulfilling Psalms 22. The psalmist himself understood that the forsaking of God was not
abandonment, but a lifting of His Sovereign protection according to His divine plan so the threats of His enemies could be carried out in prophecy. There were many times during Jesus ministry that the enemy wanted to kill Him, but they couldn't as His time had not yet come from above, John 7:30

2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 1:19 Jesus, a lamb without spot or blemish. God made Jesus to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

This is what Jesus went through for His love for all.

ISAIAH 50:6 I HID NOT MY FACE FROM SHAME.
JOHN 18:22 FIRST TO HIT JESUS WITH AN OPEN PALM ON HIS FACE WAS A PAGAN ARMY OFFICER.

4.) JOHN 19:27 Behold your mother.
5.) MATTHEW 27:46 Eli, Eli lama sabachthani? That is to say, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
6.) JOHN 19:28 I thirst.
7.) JOHN 19:28 It is finished.
8.) LUKE 23:46 Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

God reveals to whom God reveals.

The Father can't look upon sin. Jesus His entire life felt the presence of His Father with Him all the days of His life. The moment He took on the sins of the world into Himself, the moment He was dying, is when the Father could not look upon Him or be in His presence. Even Jesus did not know the Father would do this when He did it. Even as Jesus does not know the hour that His Father will say "Go and gather up the Church".

Sin of the forgiven is transferred to the sacrifice:

Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:

Thanks for thinking of Leviticus 16:21
I did a small bible study with my family yesterday and explained the system the way you have above.

It could be that Jesus meant all 3 options...
I've always felt such as yourself...When the sin fell on Jesus...God Father removed His presence from our Lord.
Even if for a few seconds at death...to Jesus it felt like forever...He and the Father are one,,,the other Part of Him was missing.

Maybe the Holy Spirit was still with Him?
I think so. I have no scripture for this....

Do you mean that Jesus experienced hell for us in the sense of His passion?

The church that wrote that creed, the CC, has since stated that Jesus never went to hell...did you know this?

A creed is nothing more than a man writing what he believes as the Apostles did not write this creed.

Jesus never went down to hell to preach as scripture says He went to preach to the spirits in prison. When Jesus laid in the tomb for three days his body was dead, but His spirit was very much alive. In 1 Peter 3:19 it says Jesus being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit went and preached to the spirits in prison. The spirits in prison that Jesus went to preach to are those angels that are reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. These angels are separate from the third Satan gathered with him as these angels bound in chains kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day, Jude 1:5-7. Ephesians 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

i know first hand what it feels like to be absent from Him. Prior to 1994, i was in Him and He in me. i had many conversations with Him, and answered many questions that i would have prepared to ask Him, next He came talking with me. In 1994 i ran from God. i haven't heard a word from Him since. crying now. Whenever i think about this, niagra falls for me. i know he has not forsaken me, and has forgiven me. but our relationship has most certainly changed, crying again. sorry can't talk any more.

When did you become saved?

I have the same experience as you do.

I met Jesus in about 1974.
It was just as you've stated...questions, answers, conversations. One time I was driving in my car, and I can remember exactly where...on the Clearview Expressway in Bayside, Queesn....the Holy Spirit was so present in the car that it literally scared me.

I've had a couple of other experiences I'd rather not get into because it might sound like bragging or something.

Now, it's been years since this has happened.
It might be the natural way.
I've heard this from others too.

Anyway, we can't go by our feelings,,,
but by our knowledge of Him...just as you've stated.
Cling to that and be happy you know Him...
that's what I've come to understand.

This would be the Penal Substitution theory of atonement.
We are the sinners.
Jesus took upon Himself the wrath of God so that we wouldn't have to.
 
The idea of God unleashing His wrath on a naughty Jesus (a.k.a. penal substitution) is a Calvinist belief, not an orthodox Christian one. The traditional understanding of the passion of Christ is that it is the greatest act of love, not wrath. There are many problems with Calvin's penal substitution doctrine. First, it divides God against Himself and thereby destroys the Trinity. Secondly, it renders God the Father wicked and unjust for punishing the most innocent who every lived.

Penal substitution, with a blood-thirsty God pouring out wrath and rage on his naughty Son, stands in stark contrast to the Christian understanding Christ's offering of Himself to the Father out of love...

"No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." (John 10:18)

"...and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

"...how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God." (Heb 9:14)
