On why being a good person is not enough

There is no sin in God, who is the light, so those walking in Him cannot have sin on them.
As 1 John 1:7 says..."But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ALL sin."

Did you consider that walking in the light as He is in the light, shows us we still have a need to have our sin cleansed?

You have not understood the sermon on the Mount, where Jesus taught that it wasn't just physical obedience but what we were thinking that was sinful.

You may pretend to me that you do not sin, do you pretend to Jesus that your thoughts aren't sinful?

The Bible makes one think very clear everyone is a sinner.
The bible, and Jesus Christ, make it very clear we need no longer be in bondage to sin.
Sinners can become ex-sinners.
Thanks to the grace of God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Did you consider that walking in the light as He is in the light, shows us we still have a need to have our sin cleansed?
What sins?
Verse 9 (of 1 John 1), tells us to confess those past sins, after verse 7 tells us how to remain in God wherein is no sin.

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:7-9

Walking in the light doesn‘t mean we are walking sinless.

Otherwise if walking in the light as He is in the light, wouldn’t mention...and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

We would have no need to be cleansed of sin, if walking in the light meant walking sinless.

Walking in the light means we are walking with God and not “hiding” when we do sin, because we confess our sin and continue to walk in fellowship.

Verse 8 the bridge verse between 7 and 9 is a testament to this very fact....If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Please consider this as you study this out.

What? Our entire walk makes us Christians. Yes you are correct, accepting (and believing!) Jesus as their Lord and Savior makes a Christian. A baby Christian, one who now begins an active walk with the Lord. Praying reading not sinning or if so then repenting and asking forgiveness. One does not (or should not) receive Salvation and then sit down.

When the burden is lifted...it aint time to sit, the journey begins!

You ever read Pilgrims Progress? The main Character is, Christian. At first he has a burden but leaves his family and journeys to the cross and loses the burden...but his walk (the book) continues. He gets into many misadventures on his journey to Celestial City. (Good read!)

This book is too be modest, an amazing book.
Best book I have ever read, besides the Bible off course.
A must read for every Christian!

What sins?
Verse 9 (of 1 John 1), tells us to confess those past sins, after verse 7 tells us how to remain in God wherein is no sin.
Did you stop sinning after you became a Christian? I wanted to, but it is in fact a long road to get totally free from sin.
But with the help of God we can eventually get there. Just like Mr Christian in the pilgrims progress!
Shalom!

Yikes!
So there IS sin in God...counter to what 1 John 1:5 says.
I can't agree.
Otherwise if walking in the light as He is in the light, wouldn’t mention...and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

I'm sorry you interpret it that way.
The "and" is in relationship to the part of verse 7 that says..."we have fellowship one with another,"
Those walking in sin have no fellowship with God, so can in no wise "walk in the light".
It is one circumstance or the other
Light, or darkness.
No grays.
Walking in the light means we are walking with God and not “hiding” when we do sin, because we confess our sin and continue to walk in fellowship.
That is counter-intuitive.
If one is walking with God, they don't commit sin.
Sinners can't and don't walk with God.
Verse 8 the bridge verse between 7 and 9 is a testament to this very fact....If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Verse 8 is a counter-point in John's differentiation of walking in light or darkness.
Please consider this as you study this out.

No thanks.
I'm not introducing darkness into Godliness.

Yes, I stopped sinning when I started walking in the light.
I wanted to, but it is in fact a long road to get totally free from sin.

The road is a short one.
Repent of all sin, permanently.
Get baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your past sins...killing the old man with the vile affections and lusts, and being raised with Christ as a new creature.
Done!

So you believe you don't do sins after being born again?
I think maybe we are talking past eachother here.
I understand that a born again Christian is released from past, present and future sins through Christ.
We don't have to worry about it.
But at the same time we still have to keep living as pure as possible. Because we are not automatically immune to bad influence.
Our bodies and minds are weak and wanting to do things. But our spirit is not.
That's why Paul said that "I keep my body under"

Yikes!
So there IS sin in God...counter to what 1 John 1:5 says.
I can't agree.

Where do you come up with these conclusions?

verse 5 doesn’t even mention the word sin.

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:5-10

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

If walking in the light as He is in the light means we are sinless, then why would we need to be cleansed from sin as we walk in the light?

JLB

That is counter-intuitive.
If one is walking with God, they don't commit sin.
Sinners can't and don't walk with God.

A sinner is a reference to a person who is separated from Christ.

Saints walk in the light.

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

And yet here it plainly says the blood of Jesus cleanses those who walk in the light, from sin.

You better rethink your theory.

How could I?
As I am now reborn of God's seed, I know His seed cannot bear the fruit of the devil.

I think maybe we are talking past each other here.
I understand that a born again Christian is released from past, present and future sins through Christ.
We don't have to worry about it.

Our bodies and minds are weak and wanting to do things. But our spirit is not.

You will need to post the verses that say anything at all about "future" sins.
Our immunity is the power of the Holy Ghost.
As fig seeds cannot bear grapes, neither can God's seed bear liars, thieves, or adulterers.
We have been given the power to "keep our bodies under".
Our "bodies" cannot force us to commit sin.
Our minds, remade in the image of Gods mind, call the shots after rebirth.
(1 Cor 2:16, Phi 4:7)

"I stopped sinning the moment I saw the Light". ( hopeful)
Ok I am certainly no scripture expert, but that is problematic for me to accept.
Don't you mean that the Light made you more aware of your sin? So if we are more aware of our sinful nature, we will sin less. I think true humility is noticing how arrogant we can get. The light makes us realise how utterly dependant we are on God. The light exposes out fragility, our blindness, our wilful rebellious nature that we can work it all out by ourselves. This is my problem. I rebel every day. I think I can manage with my own psychological study. The more I rely on Him, and less on myself, the better I will be.

I didn't say that.. it was a quote from another post..

You answered your own question there. If we have no sin. The why do Christ have to cleanse us?
