In relation to Nikki's comment, I would like to say that not all unwise choices are the result of sin per se. Sometimes, people make bad choices just because they do not have the necessary knowledge and / or experience. Sometimes we hurt people and nobody is really to blame. Of course, I do not think this is ever the case with adultery - I would think any mentally competent adult knows and understands that this is sin.

I voted yes. It causes more harm to our society than someone who smokes a joint or steals a candy bar from the store.

To a certain extent, as it is certainly a deeper pain than those two things you mentioned. However, laws are in place to protect people from themselves or from others. Smoking a joint gives people less regard for such laws, and thus makes them a danger to society. Stealing from an employer forces them to raise their prices, and that has impact on the poor. So I would say that society is right to regulate stealing and illegal activities, but it is not right for them to interfere with couples conflict.DIME Ministries said:

The way I view it, marriage is an institution of society, so society has every right to protect the dignity and meaning of that institution with criminal sanctions. Nothing to do with sexual morality, people can do what they like if they have their partners consent, as far as I am concerned anyway.

This is something I waver on, to a point.
On one hand, I feel that adulterers should be punished by law. I take into account that adultery can create broken families. This causes real harm, so, I feel that those that intentionally hurt others for no good reason(s) should be punished by law.
On the other hand, I am not convinced that this would stop adultery. If adultery was against the law, then perhaps nothing would change(unless the penalty was extremely costly.) Also, would this be legislating morality that does not need to be enforced? Every law is an enforced morality, and adultery does cause harm....so, I don't know.

I don't believe that it should. Its something that is between the couple, the affair-e, and the Lord. As Nikki stated, God gave us free will. If we have affairs or anything else for that matter, we were the ones that made the choice to sin.

it could well be said that Yeshua is going to resurrect a lot of people from over 5000 years of history on earth,
and it is written what He's going to say to many of them! (they are VERY surprised, it seems)(and don't get what they expect!!)

I never fail to be amazed when this subject is opened. God said, "Thou (You) shall not covet (sexualy desire) thou neighbor's wife. People can willy nilly 'til the cows come home but Adultery is a crime. When this country wrote it's Laws they were drafted, directly, from Common Law and Common Law is drafted, directly, from the scriptures. Adultery is the favorite sin in any organized Church Assembly today but that does not change God's, The only aw Giver, opinion nor His position on the matter. It just means there will be a great number of folks that thought themselves "saved" in Hell.
The scriptures teach us that the Path is straight and the Gate narrow that leads to Heaven. That does not cast away forgiveness but it should cause the spirit in you to be, greatly, troubled and if it doesn't, you need a Spiritual Inventory to realize, just, where you stand because the lack of being, greatly, disturbed under this position is a sure sign of either quenching the Holy Spirit or of the lack of His presence.
We can set ourselves up to be our own god or gods and change the Law to read differently but the Law has not changed, nor has the penalty changed. And remember, you cannot fool God. God knows your heart better than, even you. True repentance matters.

Right on my old warrior Buddy, this old sinful world can come up with all kind of excuses to sin against the Temple of the Holy Spirit for Christians, and unbelievers are just plain ignorant and go the way of the world. All will be judged differently, the outcome of their judgment is in the hands of the righteous Judge, Jesus Christ. The ten Commandments have not changed! Neither has God.
