Should the churches have some say in divorce

REBA IS NOT GETTING A DIVORCE.. some day i will learn how to write... Sorry guys i did not mean to mislead any one....
Ignore those guys. They are always jumping to conclusions and trying to get something juicy going.

Yes and have Christ's Body value marriage...
I'm SICK of people who praise God and say how wonderful he is and how they are so full of faith who then crumble to pieces and get a divorce because they weren't happy.

Of course there are Biblical reasons for divorce. But many, many get divorced anyway. There are some gray areas for me and that is if a man or woman are being abused. The Bible really does not address that does it?

It starts with the necessity of familial involvement on a normal, regular basis with the church, LONG before problems reach the point of talking about divorce proceedings. But the church, as a whole, buries its head in the sand (just like individuals), and doesn't want to hear anything bur happy stories from the congregation.

Larry Crabb wrote a book called: Connecting. If only we would read books like this...........

I'm completely sympathetic to that kind of situation but the actual answer is to move out of the house and out of harms way, not get a divorce. Not an easy situation to be in and certainly deserves our heartfelt empathy and support no matter what the outcome.

American society is now what I read one sociologist call a "stable, high divorce rate society." Basically, divorce is so common and accepted that there is no social stigma and people just shrug it off. Given how the culture at large affirms self-fulfillment, self-actualization, etc...even in the church, which increasingly speaks the language of therapy, not the cross...

..I don't find it surprising that, according to some studies, Born Agains have almost identical (in some areas, higher) divorce rates than the population as a whole. Catholics, surprisingly, still have a lower divorce rate than the rest of US society. Catholics also have a lower suicide rate, if I recall correctly. The Catholic subculture emphasizes community and social integration reduces both divorce and suicide. America has a higher divorce rate than many European countries, even though those countries are more progressive/liberal than the US and also offer substantial benefits to their citizens that make divorce more economically feasible. I think the problem isn't always individual couples, its American culture, and American culture has largely disintegrated.

I wonder if the Catholic Church's doctrines concerning works and salvation play into their lower suicide and divorce rates?

The Talmud addresses this issue, and overall, agree a divorce is legitimate.

Grace before divorce ?
Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

I dunno. When we covered suicide in one of my classes, long, long ago, the professor pointed out that Jewish communities also usually have lower divorce and suicide rates, even though divorce is available and suicide isn't particularly taboo. I think the way Catholics do things--you have to be a member of the community to work out your salvation, confession to a priest, being a part of the body--reduces isolation and helps build community.
