Shut off your TV?!?!

I rarely watch TV. I'm not being morally superior or anything. I got out of the habit after being in 1 year Christian residential rehab ("Jesus Camp"), where TV just wasn't a part of life.

Now, I don't watch it. At all. My daily TV watching might average 5 minutes, if you count the times I sit down to watch a show with my parents or some friends at their apartments.

When I do watch TV, I'm struck by how tranquilized I feel. And by the decidedly anti-Christian messages being pushed, mostly to entertain and sell products.

Then I wonder: is there good TV? What's your take, as Christians, on TV viewing?

I barely watch TV anymore, as far as cable goes. (I did happen to catch The Brady Bunch the other day, though.)

I guess I'm more of an internet person. Actually most of the shows I like I can watch on the internet, one way or another. (But no, I don't pirate.)
But then the internet can be just as bad as, and probably worse than, television. It depends on what sites you tend to visit, though.
And the same is true for television--it depends on what you watch.

I have to confess, my TV is frequently on. For the most part I watch the news and crime dramas. Here lately though it's been on so I don't hear the noises of the apartment complex. I'm not used to living around this many people.

I don't have cable TV or satellite TV - I just have broadcast TV, 12 channels worth watching. It gives me something to do sometimes. I watch the news, sports, and a few other things.

Remember - the whole process of TV is to make you feel somehow inadequate - that you are missing out on something - that if you buy this new fangled thing all would be well. Once you realize what TV is actually for it becomes something of a long sad commentary on humanity. If you turn it off and go to the shops (the next best thing to watching TV) you will see the same thing. Once you realize that the world you see is a mirage you will seek something deeper and more fulfilling. Once you realize this much life will become difficult as you now also realize you don't belong as part of this fantasy world. This is the beginning of wisdom.

I basically quit watching TV about 10 years ago, when I moved out from my parents. I don't even have a TV here in my place any more.
Sometimes there's TV shows I'd love to see, in that case I can find them online somewhere or borrow the DVDs from a friend, or watch them on TV at a friend's place.
If I need to do something brainless I play video games, that's still better than TV because it's not all passive, and some games actually require you to think.

With the exception of a very small number of shows I find TV to be repetitive, stupid, boring, shallow and supporting false idols and the wrong values. And by that I don't really think about fictional sex or violence. Those things are probably the least harmfull. What really pisses me off is that TV often shows a world full of stereotypes and materialism and a disregard for real humanity. And it scares me that people that watch TV might actually thinkg the world is really like that.
Nowadays there seems to be more celebrity gossip in the TV news than politics or conflicts in the world.
And there's loads of those despicable fake reality shows that claim to be "real" but in truth the people in it are acting and it's all scripted; and the sole purpose of those shows is to make fun of the people in it, while the people watching it can feel good about themselves because they're "better" than those "freaks" on TV.
Ohhh and don't get me started about talent shows/ casting shows. :verysick

Or commercials. All the money wasted on commercials... imagine that money could instead be used for doing God's will: spread His word, help people in need everywhere in the world, build our communities. No we can't, because that money that could build a better world is instead being used to tell us that we toooootally need that new smartphone so we can finally be happy. :nono2

Gonna stop ranting at this point, but that's not because I'm done, but because I have to go to bed. :D

Hi,

as a rule it depends on the tv channel/program, but i also had a sickener in this regard till now and can say that many of the televisions thus far were an occasion to be caused a temporary insanity to many people by them i.e. something like an idiocy, debility and a vulgarization to the tv viewers chiefly, this is under what circumstances the tv is inadvisable

Blessings

Indeed, JCitoL: words such as sick, insane, idiocy and vulgar do indeed come to mind when one refers to TV...

It's always irritating when I have to re-do my online TV Guide settings.

I work in television and didn't own one for about 4 years! I have one now only because it was donated to me and I use it as a computer screen.

We haven't watched actual TV for years now. We only watch stuff either on Netflix, Hulu, or whatever I have saved on our media drive.

A great way to avoid having the kiddos see ads we don't want them to see, and we limit their viewing time to Friday evenings and Saturdays, during the school year that is. They are on sort of a break due to the impending arrival of our next addition.

I don't watch much TV anymore either. Sometimes you dont realize just how bad TV is until you get away from it for awhile. Its like when you walk into a room and it smells really bad but over time you get used to the smell and dont notice it anymore, and then you leave the room and walk back in later, and the smell hits you like a ton of bricks. When I watch TV after being away from it for awhile, I just cant stomach most of it. Usually I just watch the news and maybe some sports or occasionally Christian programs.

Same here.I watch tv like 2 minutes a day. Usually is that the others wanted to watch it and I was sitting beside them.
Its very boring.
