Study: Religion May Head Toward ‘Extinction’ in Many Western Countries - TIME NewsFeed

I'm a big news buff and I noticed this item trending a lot this week. Interesting claims/observations to say the least. I was surprised to see a mathematical equation was involved in the prediction methodology (more often than not these studies on religion rely way heavily on opinion data)

I'm wondering how people feel about the article? It makes me ponder whether or not this would have any impact on international relations, or how some countries would relate to religiously void others in the future. Could extinction of religion ''cascade'' like religion itself has in the past?

Naw, they're wrong. In Europe at least, religion isn't dying. It's Christianity that's dying out. Islam is growing by leaps and bounds mainly through immigration. Unlike the secular, socialists who encourage women not to have children and have abortions, Islam stands firmly against feminism. The demographic shift is telling and they will eventually take over Europe. When that happens, their beloved socialism, feminism, and multi-culturalism will die.

Deservedly so. :shame2

Well, sort of...

I lived in Europe for many years... And I had many friends of Morroccan/Turkish descent, who were raised in Muslim homes. Many of these people were athiests (as am I) who came to understand that the archaic regulations that ALL religion promote are not worth the time or energy to continue. I did at one time ask what their families opinions were on their beliefs, and was told that back in their homeland, their beliefs would not be accepted or respected, but now that they lived in Europe, they had the freedom to think for themselves without fear of major reprisal.

The vast majority of people I met and interacted with were espoused Athiest's.

I dont believe that religion will ever die out until the end of the world. People have something inside them that makes them religious. Remember that the definition of religion is an organized set of beliefs about something. That definition would include atheists too because there beliefs are that there is no God and they believe that abortion is okay, that one can choose to do whatever they want to, that science and philosophy are the answers to mankinds problems, it sounds like a religion to me. There will always be Christians on earth until Jesus comes back. Attempts to get rid of Christianity throughout history have always failed. It is God who protects His children. I believe that there are Christians in Europe and that they will exist eventhough there are big changes in European societies.

I think that the reason people go after a religion in the first place , is because they need something to help them through tough times. Although it can be a good thing it gets out of hand a lot. and what happens to the person who finds out there really isn't a god or afterlife. their psyche will be shattered and they will most likely go insane believing if there isn't a creator there's no point in trying to be good or caring about living. So in the long run it can be very unhealthy. at least thats what i think but what can you do.
And i don't think it'll die in America any time soon, they are the majority there after all.

I remember a noted Christian who once said: "If say there is no god, i would still rather live my life as a Christian because of Christianity's virtues of peace, goodness, kindness, and benefits to mankind, i believe the Christian life is the best life."

athiesm isnt a religion akjv. read up on what the different beliefs are and what agnosticism and athiesm are. it makes you at least sound intellegent(no offense).

uh no, athiesm isnt that way. i know some athiest that dont buy evolution,a means against and thiesm means belief in a diety. athiesmis a world view but not a religion. they dont have rites etc. they all dont think alike.

In one of my Sociology classes, we talked about how the "Death of God (and Religion)" has been predicted since the 19th century or so. It has yet to happen. Even in Communist states, people would take belief systems and turn them into what social scientists call "secular religions;" extreme Marxism, extreme Nationalism, that sort of thing.

That said...as a Christian, I certainly believe that its possible that our faith might just start dying. We having mainline churches going pro-gay, we have increasing numbers (or at least it seems that way) of very vocal, very adamant atheists (I would argue this form of atheism is a religion), and we have indications that, in America at least, being born again does not equal a change in behavior.

My own guess, just based on my observations of increasing narcissism in my own generation (I'm almost 27), is that we'll see more watered-down "user friendly" churches and a growing number of people involved in "alternative" forms of spirituality, along with maybe a growth in the number of people who reject God and make that the basis for their lives. In the US at least, the emphasis on the individual along with weakening social ties and increasing narcissism is making it harder to create a solid, stable church family; I think we'll see more people involved in mysticism and other ways of "experiencing" God rather than being bothered by other believers and sound doctrine.

Sad times.
