Some information I put together and recently posted on my FB page.

I am amazed at the irony. Many of us are quick to voice opinion about gun ownership in the United States and how we should not have weapons. The primary reason of course is the number of deaths that are the result of someone misusing a weapon either by accident or blatant disregard for human life. So what's the irony? A large percentage of those that speak out against firearms wouldn't even blink an eye when they hear about someone committing murder by abortion. The latest statistics I can find show that in 2012 we citizens of the United States committed 1,050,000 murders by abortion. 21% (1 in 5) of all pregnancies in the US end in abortion and the most predominant reason (75%) is inconvenience. "It will interfere with work." "It will interfere with school." "I don't want to be a single parent." Sheesh!!!

1,050,000 murders by abortion every year. Maybe I can help put this into a better perspective. That’s 2,876 per day….120 per hour…. 2 murders every minute of every day 24/7/365.

That’s the equivalent of the 1999 Columbine school shooting massacre every 30 minutes….the 2005 Red Lake, MN killings every 5 minutes….the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre every 16 minutes…and the more recent 2012 massacre at Newtown Connecticut every 14 minutes.

What about gun related deaths? There are roughly 32,000 gun related deaths in the US annually. 60% of these are suicide. None of the abortions are the result of suicide so let’s throw those out of this argument. That leaves 40% of 32,000 gun related deaths (12,800) are the result of accidents or murder. We cause that many deaths by abortion every 4-1/2 days. Wow!

Although it has been pretty steadily decreasing, which is great, the number of fatalities on our highways involving the use of alcohol in combination with motor vehicles each year typically exceeds the 12,800 annual gun related deaths. In fact, of the data I found (1982-2011) only 2010 and 2011 had fewer fatalities than gun related deaths by a relatively small margin.

I wonder….how many of the anti-gun crowd can honestly say they have never been behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol not to mention driving inattentively by texting or dialing their cell phones. But they are not screaming for the confiscation of our automobiles because that is something they also use and that would not be acceptable. Hmmm……

I also recently responded to an anti-gun supporter when she posted the statement, "In England the police don't carry firearms. What does that tell you?" Actually, a friend of mine responded to this statement with the correction that this is not entirely true. Here's my reply. "As far as what England does I could care less. We separated ourselves from England nearly 240 years ago for a reason and I am grateful that the colonies were both willing and able to arm themselves then."

We have ISIS knocking at our door now among who knows how many other potential threats.

The bottom line for me is that I have never felt a need or desire to own firearms for the purpose of personal protection. Maybe I live in an area that makes that easy. I don't have a carry permit for my handgun and have no intention of obtaining one. I enjoy hunting and shooting sports. What I do is not a danger to anyone and personally I feel more threatened by the other motorists I meet on the highway than I do from any gun owner in the United States. But one thing is absolutely certain. If it became necessary for me to use one of my tools as a weapon to protect my family, friends, and country whether they support my right or not, from life threatening persons I do know how to use them.

Govt. effort to do what? I need clarification

The effort to strip us of this right.

Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Why do you support the governments right to take this away from us?

And Classik, I want you to know that I'm not picking on you. You appear to be a neutral party here, so I would like your input. Do you fully understand the ramifications of disarming a free society?

As I said, I'm just curious.

I'm not in support of guns. The primary purpose is simple: shooting people. Using it for fun or sport is just problem or danger in disguise. Read history and know why guns were made in the first place. It was discovered accidentally by one guy like that that played with certain chemicals: thus the idea of bullets. From this...a lot happened and metamorphosised into what we have today - primarily used for its primary purpose.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Do not get very furious with me and blow apart my rubber balls with your guns. Balls dont like bullets;) :chin hehe

so you don't watch any war movies? those props are fully functional weapons. a less then lethal round from a cop can kill. shoot blanks can kill. Brandon lee died from a blank shot at his chest from a weapon less then seven feet from his body.

What is the promary purpose for using guns? Squirrel shooting?
I would say it has three primary uses
1. to rob and rape and kill offensively and unlawfully
2. to protect one from the above in a lawful manner.
3 hunting and sports use.

Its a tool any tool can kill in the hands of the wrong human
baseball bat can kill if in the wrong hands.
so can a butter knife or a car

Suppose all guns were; not available at all any where
and people started killing with cars and or knives and bats.
would you advocate removing cars and knives and bats from society also?

People can use anything to kill if that's what they really desire. Guns just happen to be one of the more efficient tools. And that's also what makes them efficient for self defense purposes. Owning such a weapon doesn't mean that I want to shoot people, in my case it just means that I wish to be able to effectively prevent people from hurting me should they try.

People DO need to learn how to use guns properly. It's called gun safety. Despite what I've been saying about self defense, I actually don't own a gun at this time. I would take a class or learn about them from someone who is familiar with guns before getting one.
I think children should learn about gun safety. If a gun does somehow make it into their hands, they will know to treat carefully and not like a toy or carelessly.

Also, there are people who have hobbies involving guns that doesn't involve killing people.

This statement is incorrect and downright wrong.
