Some information I put together and recently posted on my FB page.
I am amazed at the irony. Many of us are quick to voice opinion about gun ownership in the United States and how we should not have weapons. The primary reason of course is the number of deaths that are the result of someone misusing a weapon either by accident or blatant disregard for human life. So what's the irony? A large percentage of those that speak out against firearms wouldn't even blink an eye when they hear about someone committing murder by abortion. The latest statistics I can find show that in 2012 we citizens of the United States committed 1,050,000 murders by abortion. 21% (1 in 5) of all pregnancies in the US end in abortion and the most predominant reason (75%) is inconvenience. "It will interfere with work." "It will interfere with school." "I don't want to be a single parent." Sheesh!!!
1,050,000 murders by abortion every year. Maybe I can help put this into a better perspective. That’s 2,876 per day….120 per hour…. 2 murders every minute of every day 24/7/365.
That’s the equivalent of the 1999 Columbine school shooting massacre every 30 minutes….the 2005 Red Lake, MN killings every 5 minutes….the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre every 16 minutes…and the more recent 2012 massacre at Newtown Connecticut every 14 minutes.
What about gun related deaths? There are roughly 32,000 gun related deaths in the US annually. 60% of these are suicide. None of the abortions are the result of suicide so let’s throw those out of this argument. That leaves 40% of 32,000 gun related deaths (12,800) are the result of accidents or murder. We cause that many deaths by abortion every 4-1/2 days. Wow!
Although it has been pretty steadily decreasing, which is great, the number of fatalities on our highways involving the use of alcohol in combination with motor vehicles each year typically exceeds the 12,800 annual gun related deaths. In fact, of the data I found (1982-2011) only 2010 and 2011 had fewer fatalities than gun related deaths by a relatively small margin.
I wonder….how many of the anti-gun crowd can honestly say they have never been behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol not to mention driving inattentively by texting or dialing their cell phones. But they are not screaming for the confiscation of our automobiles because that is something they also use and that would not be acceptable. Hmmm……
