Companies issued $1.2 trillion in new shares last year. This exceeds the number of shares bought back by $454 billion. IOW, current shares were debased by about 2%. In addition, companies borrowed an additional net $693 billion last year, which shareholders will need to repay out of future profits.

Potential reversion to the historical equity valuation norm is an additional factor to consider. Historically, equites tended to have a net negative real return for a decade or so when valuations were super lofty. Negative real bond rates are also extant.

Inflation is the bank's war on investors.
