The Derailing Thread

I stumbled upon a job yesterday in Knoxville. A guy called me to check references on a guy I worked with last year - and one thing led to another and, well, my friend will be offered the job - but at the same time, the caller wanted to know if I'd like to come up and look things over as well.

There are some really interesting aspects of that place (the job, as well as the city) that have me wondering.
It's an awesome place. My wife and I live in WV, but we really see ourselves living in Tennessee in the future!

I wasn't really looking, but I was also getting kinda nervous/irritated/etc. with work.
It was good to be reminded that I'm not here because I can't go anywhere else. :)

I reconnected with a buddy from high school a couple of days ago, he's living in Knoxville now and we're gonna try to catch up soon. In the meantime, we've been on PS4 playing Minecraft. That's how we roll.

Good stuff. Same here. I randomly seen and reconnected with a old friend of mine from years ago. We went and played golf and had a couple cold brews and talked about the good ol days. Thats how we roll.

For the first time in US history, more businesses are closing than are starting. Bankers have been slowly confiscating the savings of individuals with negative real interest rates, and those savings are how most new businesses get started. Bankers are moving the country backward.

Details of how this process is playing out are in John Mauldin's 1/17/2015 "Thoughts From the Frontlines" letter.

Devolving.

The name Devo comes "from their concept of 'de-evolution' — the idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind has actually begun to regress, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society."

I thought they were nuts. The premise of their name was that man HAD evolved in the past, which is wrong.

But their believe that we were regressing was, in fact, right.

As regards to Darwin, one must consider the effects of gravity. The moon's gravity is slowing the earth's rotation. Once upon a time, days were only 3 hours long, but the moon has slowed the earth to 24 hour days. 3 hour days mean thousand MPH winds, so only simple critters could subsist in such an environment. Darwin may not realized how gravity affected the time frame for his thesis.

Time passes slower on the surface of the earth than it does in outer space.
No, it only seems that way - the effect is caused by dealing with dense, dull-witted people. In space it seems to go faster, cause the only people in space tend to have Master's degrees in the sciences, and are top of their class as well. :)

Wait, just how much slower on earth?

Earth's rotation = 1000 mph
Earth's orbital speed = 67,000 mph

Ok, but, I mean, a friend pointed out the other motion vectors to me:

Sun's relative local motion = 43,000 mph

Sun's Galactic Orbital Speed = 783,000 mph

Milky Way's motion through the Universe = 1,300,000 mph

Grand total when things line up going in the same relative direction = 2,194,000 mph compared to a stationary point in space or roughly 0.32% the Speed of Light (670,000,000 mph)

Ah, but what about the speed of a cockroach.
All factors must be added in.

According to my grandson time is determined by one half hour of computer game play time goes faster than one half hour of school class time. He is VERY sure that it does.

2 different phenomena are in play here. Gravity slows time, and acceleration also slows time. Due solely to gravity, time moves approximately 350 picoseconds faster on the surface of the earth than it does at the center of the earth, and about 550 picoseconds faster in outer space than it does on the surface of the earth. GPS satellites have to have their clocks periodically resynchronized with earth based clocks due to this effect.

In addition to gravity's effects, objects that experience acceleration relative to an observer on the surface of the earth will experience a time slow down based on their acceleration. Based solely on their greater distance from the earth's gravity, GPS satellite clocks would tick 500 picoseconds faster. However, GPS satellites have also experienced acceleration to get them into orbit, so their orbital speed slows their clocks by 100 picoseconds. The net result is that GPS clocks tick 400 picoseconds faster than clocks on the surface of the earth.
