If you want to continue this discussion, I suggest you PM me. I won't pull the thread off-topic.

No thank you, I'll just continue posting in my own thread and if you want to say something with no response from me then I suggest that you open your own thread about it.

And I will feel free to respond to you if you post in my thread and tell you where you are wrong. So too bad.

I never said I didn't expect to get a response from you. But if you want to talk about your issues with me (instead of the mental health topic), this thread isn't the place for that crap.
This will be my last post on the matter. Again, if you want to talk about your gripes with me or at all talk the issue out, PM me.

I don't want to talk to you. WHy don't you honor your word to stay away from my threads like you promised? Get out.

dr.thomas szasz was -brilliant-

he had ongoing publications in the economist

he had a private psychotherapy practice that apparently really, truly changed peoples' lives...

by encouraging them to take more responsibility and work their way out of psychiatry, etc. (true capitalist, I imagine it was profitable, lol)

The myth of mental illness was (and is!) a classic. In the 70s, he was so popular in intellectual circles that even E fuller torrey (now a high powered, drug em up and lock em up shrink) wrote similar material, basically trying to out-szasz szasz.

is he...correct? -shrug- I followed Jesus, not Szasz. I now seem to mostly appreciate Szasz where he hits upon the truth, and that's because Jesus has opened my heart and mind to Truth, even when I'd rather not deal with it...

suicide rates seem to be more affected by economic and social shifts than dsm labels. 1 in 6 Americans are on at least one psych drug -right now- , and our suicide rates have gone up with more "treatment..."

while some other nations have seen their rates go down, even without the never ending mantra of "treatment! treatment!," etc.

some data indicates an increase in aggressive and/or suicidal acts, up to and including completed suicides, with antidepressants in vulnerable populations. additional data seems to show the same in antiseizure drugs (commonly used for psych indications), benzodiazepines, and a number of rather frightening ill effects of pretty much ever psych drug ever, over the long haul. and yet...

some people swear by "the miracle meds." -shrug- a low(ish) "atypical" keeps me calmer and less double minded...I chase it with b vitamins, antioxidants, etc., hoping to keep my brain and the rest of my body from being damaged in the name of "mental stability..."

truth? the psych industry has been extremely cruel to many, many people. some data indicates that suicide rates go up, dramatically, after psych hospitalization, and stay elevated for about 90 days post discharge. I can believe this. I honestly think my "Schizophrenia" is in part due to involuntary shock and deliberately inflicted trauma by "good psychiatrists." does anyone...care? Jesus does. I think my parents...love me and need me to move forward, as best I can. That's what I try to do, believe you me.

I'm not saying one -must- accept Szasz's take on psychiatry, just...please avoid dismissing him (and other dissident "experts") simply because his (rather nuanced, brilliant) position on mental health, etc. is not to one's liking.

and that is all. :)

From my experiences, medication is best at alleviating symptoms, but there still needs to be discipline, goals, etc. I have ADHD and have issues with clinical depression. The meds for both help but are not cures. I still need to work with a schedule and acknowledge my limitations with ADHD, the depression and anxiety aspect depends on variables. The medication makes it easier for me to pull myself out of a slump and make it harder for my brain to sieze me up in a feed back loop of tension or hopelessness.

You get it. It seems like common sense but it's apparently very hard for some to grasp. (Oh it's just a text book it's not about pills)...

But every disorder has treatment to go with it. WHy wouldn't it?! WHat is the treatment? Pills, pills, and more pills. Billions of dollars worth of pills. Not nice pills either from what I've read.

Not all disorders are treated with pills. However I will say that the problem you seem to be having is that large drug corporations are selling treatments to people at high costs and have a greedy reason to do so. Usually people that argue this way are labled with an s word.

WHat's the s word? I have no clue

Tell me about some disorders that are not treated with pills...

Socialism. The main reason medical issues both physical and psychological are so expensive in the US is due to the fact we alow these fields to compete in the market. So insurance, medical providers, and pharmaceutical companies can charge whatever they want since it's considered an inelastic demand.

It's one of the main reasons why most of Europe, Asia, and South America offer at least some level of universal healthcare.

Oh, and dyslexia. The disorders that get medication are the ones where a person has issues with reality or the cause is mostly understood.

Mood disorders are prescribed SSRIs because the issues tend to be with serotonin.

Stimulants are used with adhd and with some nueral atypical people because dopamine imbalances tend to be the causes of a lot of the symptoms of focus disorders.

SO how are they treated?
Therapy for a large chunk of it. Support groups, diet changes, exercise, some people sign up for programs or non prophets to get access to care givers that can help with people on the more extreme side of say Autism or dysphoria. Some types if dysphoria ( like gender dysphoria) can be treated with hormones, but can also be treated with group therapy or lifestyle changes.
