The "I HATE NOTRE DAME!" thread.

Uhm, actually, a Notre Dame player fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line, and they credited it as a touchdown anyway.

Really? That's your grief? He was 10 yards away from a defender and let go of the ball before crossing the line? (It's stupid showmanship that players let go of it so close to the line anyway.)

Never mind that PS is getting hammered as I type this. I'll be the bigger man in this two way thread. I've given PS some love. I'm in the heart of Big Ten football and want to see the conference represent. I'm pulling for them because I pull for the Big Ten, but you're seeing college football through Joe-Pa's bottle glasses.

Going into this beat-down, PS was #18. I'd be hoping they hang on to the AP poll at all if I were you.

The BIG news in football this pat week-end has been celebration flukes. Both Marshall and Notre Dame had an instance in which the ball carrier dropped the ball before crossing the goal line in order to celebrate, with the referees missing it both times. And then in the NFL, the Detroit Lions did it, got caught, and lost the game as a result.

Okay, I'm going to come off as a homer here, but are you saying Calvin Johnson didn't catch that ball and score for Detroit?! :o Really!!!?? So, if a guy breaks the invisible plane of the end-zone while reaching the ball across the line, the play is over isn't it? It's over, the play is done, and a TD is scored. It doesn't matter what happens after that!

Again call me a homer, but I've yet to hear a single national commentator say that wasn't a touchdown. Jim Rome opened his show with that take.

Okay, so Notre Dame is 1-1. I can live with 11-1 on the season! :D

Mike, after reviewing the instant replay, the referees upheld the original call. A player must carry the ball across the goal line to score, and in all three instances, the player dropped the ball just before crossing the goal line.

And there was more BIG news yesterday evening, as a Dallas Cowboys player single-handedly handed victory to the Washington Redskins. Losing by six points with three seconds left, the Cowboys threw a touchdown pass. But one of their players had grabbed a Redskin around the neck and hung on. That negated the touchdown, and the Redskins won.

Huh? Hill passed the ball to Johnson in the end zone. He caught it, had complete control, landed both feet, went down on his knee (ball still in complete control) and then when his hand with the ball hit the ground, it finally came free. It's supposedly a new rule this year that the player needs to have "control through the progress of the play". A player catches a ball in the end zone, lands both feet in bounds with the ball in control = touch down! Six points!

How are you saying he dropped the ball before he got to the goal line? No one outside of Chicago is disputing the legitimacy of that TD.

This is completely different than a players shedding a ball as he crosses the line.

YESSSS!!!!!

Notre Dame failed to get a single ranking vote!

Meanwhile, Penn State is ranked number 22, having dropped four places after being pounded by Number 1 Alabama.

Mike, I watched some replays of the Calvin Johnson debacle, and I see what happened. Johnson caught the ball in the end zone and was tackled immediately. Although he clearly had control of the ball, he released it just before hitting the ground. The written rule explicitly states that if a player is tackled while catching the ball, he must retain control of the ball all the way to the ground or it is an incomplete pass.

The slow-motion replays show Johnson slammed the ball into the ground (perhaps to celebrate) while he was falling. Despite the howls of protest, the call was upheld by the referees after watching the instant replay. Calvin Johnson did not obey the rule.

Vince, you are as jaded as they come. I've listened to Mike & Mike on ESPN, Jim Rome, and all the national "unbiased" talking heads. The most extreme comments have been something to the effect of, "Well, I guess to the letter of the new 2010 rule, it was not maintained through the process of the catch, however everyone knows it was a catch."

That's the best thing to an endorsement I've heard. You really have to be jaded to look at the control he has over the ball, two feet, a knee, a hip (all with the ball firmly in hand) and then it bounces away when it hits the field. So, if a guy pins to feet to the side of the endzone and catches a pass, do we have to see what he does with the ball out of bounds?

Vince, you are looking for reasons to hate on my football.

ND pounds MSU at Spartan Stadium Saturday night.

Penn State... Kent State? Kent State? Kent State? That's how Penn State rolls eh? Why play anyone for that matter. Just have a bye week. They aught to be ashamed of themselves, but of course, they'll have some excuse for playing Kent State.:confused::confused:

You'll really be hatin' when Detroit rolls up on Philly in their own house. I'll be there, about 19 rows behind Vick's bench sharing our mutual love for our lovable canines. Philly's taking the gas-pipe on Sunday - Count on it!

Jaded? Try elated! Penn State is ranked and Notre Dame, choke, laugh, snicker, isn't.

If you are trying to say CJ did NOT catch that TD pass and come down (as has been the criteria for decades), then YES, you are jaded and biased.

No reputable national voice has said it was otherwise.

So Ranked Penn State chose to have Kent State (no traditional ties) on their schedule. That is weaker than weak.

Looks like my friend Mike has himself psyched for another day of Penn State victory and Notre Dame defeat.

In keeping with the nature of this thread, I'll continue to be the more amicable of the two. Didn't see the Penn State game, but they did what they were expected to do against the likes of Kent State.

Notre Dame, still on their 15 year rebuilding plan is at Michigan State. MSU has their number. Only USC has beaten them more than MSU in recent history. I'm not optimistic, but the jury's still out on both of them. So which one is "more bad"? We'll find out.

Let me ask you this, Vince. Aside from Notre Dame, do you pull for Big Ten teams when they're playing non-conference games? What about when they're in bowl games. I'm a Big Ten honk, so the perfect situation would be if ND would accept modern NCAA football and join the conference. That said, I pull for Big Ten teams when they play non-c game (except ND), especially in bowl games. Next to ND, Michigan's my team. I HATE OSU, but I'll pull for them in bowl games, because I'm sick of the rap the conference gets nationally, especially from ESPN who are SEC slappies.

Here's another side-bar. In listening to a lot of sports radio, Eagles fans are said to be by far the worst fan base in their treatment of visiting fans. I've heard horrible stories from fans who road-tripped and get the worst things said and done to them - even when they've had small children with them. Eagles fans have a horrible reputation in this regard.

Penn State pulled off a 24-0 route of Kent State. I also pull for the military teams, especially Air Force. Army, the worst of the three military academies, shocked everyone by winning 24-0 today. I also pull for Temple because my Dad graduated from there.

I like Boston College, which has humiliated Notre Dame in the past, but Penn State and Air Force are my two favorites.

I'm still bitter about the year that ND beat FSU on the second to last game of the year. They played BC on the final game and were still hung over from the FSU victory. BC snuck up on them. So FSU and ND ended up with equal records, but FSU got the nod, even though ND beat them. :mad

I know... I'm setting myself up with this one. Have at it. :D

YYYYEEESSS!!!!!!

Unranked Michigan State beat Notre Dame by three points in overtime!

But the BIG news in college football:

Unranked Air Force Academy lost by only three points to #7 Oklahoma State. Both teams played well. Air Force has the highest rushing of all college teams, and despite losing, they MIGHT be ranked this week.

I knew I could count on you. They certainly had ABC fooled (and Notre Dame), because their camera was completely trained on the kick. Gutsy call, but in retrospect, it should have been 1/2 expected with the long kick to tie.

Good call Dantonio. :salute

AAAAaaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!

Someone gave Notre Dame a ranking vote! They are #43 in the polls! Only the top 25 teams are ranked, but the poll records every team that gets any votes.
