The Ophicial Philadelphia Philles Phanatics Thread

And now, the answer to yesterday's exciting question: What is the second losingest team in history?

Would you believe that it's the Atlanta Braves, which are struggling with the Phillies for phirst place? And the amazing Chicago Cubs, who have gone 102 years without winning a World Series, are number 3.

Why are the three losingest teams all American baseball teams? The popularity of the sport has allowed teams to earn enough money to survive. The rules allow teams to be sold to different owners and move to different cities, and this helps them survive. And baseball teams play a lot of games every year.

Today, the Phillies won and the Braves lost, putting the Phillies two games in phirst place. Their magic number is 15.

This means that any combination of 15 Phillies wins and Braves losses will clinch the division for the Phillies. For the Braves, the magic number is 19. The other three teams in their division have been eliminated.

Another Phillies win and Braves loss, and the Phillies are now three games in phirst.

The Braves were beating the last-place Washington National 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth. They put in a relief pitcher, the Nationals loaded the bases and then hit a grand slam home run.

But the BIG news in baseball is:

JETER THE CHEATER!

The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees have the two best records in baseball, and they played each other last night. The Rays pitcher threw a ball that hit the knob of Yankee superstar Derek Jeter's bat and then flew into fair territory for a certain out. But Jeter grabbed his arm in pain, claiming that the ball had hit him. While everybody else said that he was faking, the umpire agreed with Jeter, sending him to first base, from where he later scored.

But justice triumphed, and the Rays won. Jeter later bragged about it, stating that it is his job to get on first base.

With both the Phillies and the Braves winning today, the Phillies remain three games in phirst place. Their magic number is 12, while it's 18 for the Braves.

The Phillies and the Braves are back in tandem, with each team winning today. The Phillies magic number is 11, while it's 17 for the Braves.

Still in sync!

The Phillies and the Braves both won today, with 13 games left in the regular season. The Phillies magic number is 10, while the Braves magic number is 16.

Since my last post, the Phillies have beaten the Braves twice. With 22 games left between the two teams, any combination of 6 Phillies wins or Braves losses will clinch the division title for the Phillies.

Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay became the phirst Phillies pitcher in 28 years to win 20 games in one season.

With nine straight wins, the Phillies have the longest current streak of any team.

And with the best record in the National League, the Phillies are looking for home phield advantage in the play-offs.

The Phillies have just completed a three-game sweep of the Braves, and are now 6 games in phirst place. The Phillies magic number is 4, while the Braves magic number is 16. With a total of twenty games left, the Braves are not eliminated, but it looks like they'll be going to the play-offs as a wild card.

And the Phillies record is now .601, placing them behind the Yankees and the Twins, but still the leading team in the National League.

Looks like Lewis and I will be going to the World Series.

The Phillies have just finished beating the Mets, and their magic number is down to 3, with 19 games remaining for the Phillies and the Braves. But the BIG news in baseball is:

Jack Cust of the Oakland Athletics really smashed the ball. His bat shattered, hitting Texas Ranger pitcher Cliff Lee behind his ear with splinters as the pitcher quickly turned away from the flying shrapnel.

Hats off to Bobby Cox, the 69 year old manager of the Atlanta Braves. With today's victory, he has won 2,500 games as a Major League baseball manager.

The Philadelphia Phillies, for the phourth year in a row, have clinched the National League East. And even if they lose their phive remaining games, they will still phinish with the best record in the National League, giving them home phield advantage all the way through the play-offs.

Lewis is going to be spending a lot of money on tickets this year.

Pholks, it was the bottom of the ninth, two out, and the Mets had a runner on phirst and third. As the Phillies pitcher began his throw, the Mets started screaming "Time out!" The pitcher couldn't stop his throw in time, and the batter grounded out, making the Phillies the winner.

But the umpire announced that he had called "Time out!" before the pitch was completed, and the play was voided. A phurious Phillies manager was ejected when he went into a rage against the umpire.

But our Phillles held up, striking out the next batter and winning the game.

For those of you who can't figure out what's going on:

1) Today, Sunday, October 3, 2010, was the last day of regular Major League Baseball.
2) Both the American League and the National League have three division champs, plus a wild card team.
3) The League play-offs begin on Wednesday.

For the first time in fifteen years, the Cincinnati Reds are going to the play-offs. They won 2 out of 3 games against teams with losing records, but only won 3 out of 7 against teams with winning records.

They'll be phacing the pherocious Phillies, starting on Wednesday.

With a phour to nothing victory over the Reds, the Phillies have won the phirst play-off game. The two teams will play for "best out of phive," with the winner advancing to the next round.

The Phillies have beaten the Reds, and now lead the series 2-0.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants had beaten the Atlanta Braves, and they are now leading them 4-0 in the second game of their series. It ain't all over until it's all over, but it looks like the Phillies will be playing the Giants for the National League Championship.
