I find this mindset a lot in God’s people.
Here is what the scriptures teach us.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
Philippians 2:12-16
- work out your own salvation with fear and trembling
- holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
This walk of salvation is our responsibility to steward wisely. If we become careless with it, we are acting foolishly. Like the foolish virgins.
There are very many passages that teach us to live godly lives and forsake the things of this world, and to cleanse ourselves from filthy behavior and sinful habits.
To also take up a lifestyle that led by the Spirit, rather than a lifestyle that is carnal and seeks to gratify the cravings of our sinful flesh.
IOW’s we are to actively participate with the Holy Spirit to cultivate the divine nature through godly habits or ways of righteousness so that we are practicing righteousness.
Here are a few:
But also for this very reason,
giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 2 Peter 1:5-9
For if you live according to the flesh you will die;
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption,
but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8
Each of us must choose to invest our time towards the things the Holy Spirit is leading us to live out. Developing godly habits while forgoing old habits that are fleshly and carnal.
At the end of the Day we will all stand before our Lord to give an account of what we did with the new life He has given us.
“
But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Matthew 25:26-30
