Dear friends, We have all but discussed (too much perhaps) about ""false teachers".
Can we discuss about true teachers. Who are the true teachers of Scripture throughout Church history, and here in America today? Any opinions? In Erie Scott
:)

Dear Jasoncran, Mostly modern Christians. Mostly Protestants, and one Catholic, G.K. Chesterton.
What about the Church Fathers? Chrysostom, Jerome, Augustine of Hippo, St. Basil, St. Gregory Nazianzus, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Symeon the New Theologian? Ever heard of them? Ever hear of Fr. Seraphim Rose?
Ever hear of Fr. Peter E. Gillquist?
In PA Scott R. Harrington PS Ever hear of St. Photios, St. Mark of Ephesus, St. Gregory Palamas?
Ever hear of Fr. Alexander Schmemann, Fr. Thomas Hopko, Fr. Anthony Coniaris? Bishop Kallistos Ware?

heard to learn from the dead saints at times those guys are great of the ones i know of.

but we need men TODAY who follow the word and uplift them.

I sure do miss James Kennedy. His grasp of scripture was eye opening..

I miss my Dad looking back we can see how much he grew in the Lord over the years. The depth of his Bible understanding was outstanding... His compassion for those who were empty.

Dear Jasoncran, Many of these men are available in the Philip Schaff series from Eerdman's Publishers in Grand Rapids, MI, the Ante-Nicene Fathers and the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. I have some of these volumes in my own library. I have read St. Basil. He is a sound teacher. I have read St. Photios. He is spot on.
There are also the Church Fathers in the Catholic University of America Press books.
All Reformers of Lutheranism and Presbyterianism (Calvinism) rely on Augustine of Hippo. A Western Church Father. In Erie Scott

i know who augustine is, he is one my favorite saints of lore.

but like i said each generation needs men of the time who will lead the world to its knees via the gospel till the lord returns

i'm sure agustine would say that in his book city of God.

Dear jasoncran, People need to know other saints of old beside blessed Augustine. He is just one among many many saints. And he is not always correct in some of his teaching. Relying on him exclusively as "the Teacher" is a mistaken. Unfortunately, Catholicism and Calvinism and Lutheranism do that, to some extent. They carry over Augustine's personal biases and weaknesses and philosophy that colors his theology with a Platonic mindset. Sometimes to the detriment of sound exegesis of the Scriptures. In Erie Scott

I enjoy the teachings of many, apart from my own teachers that God has placed in my life, who would be the very first on my list! Some are:

Joyce Meyer
Andrew Wommack
Kay Arthur
John and Lisa Bevere
Beth Moore
Joseph Prince
Creflo Dollar
Ravi Zacharias
James and Betty Robson
Bill Johnson

I 'd try a small church or a small segment of a large one. The big churchs seem to hold more troubles.. I guess if you have 50 members you have 50 problems 100 then 100. A place where you know the pastor, does he live what he teaches. What kind of family man is he. His teenage kids might not like him just now but do they respect him.

why do you assume that about me? i am not against looking at other saints of the lore.

i do like st.jerome but i havent reasearched him but to whom do we rely on the bible or men's opinion.

i look to the word, that doesnt mean i just blow off early saints.

you also didnt mention st.aquinas or chaucer.

There are some good bible teachers out there but most are somewhat tainted because they have not recognized that the pre-trib rapture is false and dangerous. I recently listened to a teaching by Jim Baker AGAINST the prosperity gospel(he really nailed it). JS does a good teaching on faith in the sacrifice of Christ. I know that K. Hagin has been blamed for the false word of faith teaching but I used to listen to the guy daily and always learned something because he would actually teach the bible. B.Graham was an excellent preacher to the lost who needed to accept Christ.

For sure Jason for sure.

Jesus of Nazareth
Saul (Paul) of Tarsus
John (the son of Zebedee)

Can't really think of any since then.

Does a good teacher have to be charismatic?

I have personally met Ravi. I grew up in the CM&A and was a member there for about 40 years.

i went to local cma here. you usually like only charismatic , though the cma is very close to that thinking as they in generally accept healing promise and also teach almost the same as charismatics. they just to teach much on the gifts.

zacherias has influenced me more then many know. its by him that i got heavy into apologetics and started using my god given gifts.

though he wasnt the start of that. a humilating beating by an zen buddhist did the trick.

do you listen to his show let my people think?he seldom uses scripture directly just ontological arguments and or teaches on world views ie compartive religion.

I don't get his show where I live.

The founder of the C&MA, A.B. Simpson, was a charismatic. The denomination has veered away from the established principles he set down.
