Day 8 Sunday 9/21/14 Matthew 1:24, 25 Joseph Obeyed.
Today we are concluding Chapter one. Mike, my old buddy, had said that he felt more information on this most important event could have been useful for our study. SO, I started a new thread in "Apologetics & Theology" titled, The Incarnation...."
I love it when I see in the scriptures that either God, or an angel commands one of His people to do something, and we don't see a lot of argument from that person. They spring into action, not like Moses or Jonah to name a couple. Joseph and Mary are very good examples of what God expects from His servants.
As I mentioned before, Joseph must have sprung out of bed that morning with a new lease on life, so to speak. In V.19 it says that Joseph "resolved" to divorce Mary quietly. That word "resolved" causes me to think that Joseph spent a good amount of time languishing over the thought of separation from the apple of his eye.
For a Hebrew, who is a "just" man, this is no easy matter. Personally, I feel that Joseph spent a lot of time on his knees. Perhaps his prayer went something like this; "O Lord, I was so sure that Mary was the one who You brought into my life to be my help-meet for the rest of my life....how could I have been so wrong." Actually, his prayers were probably much more heart wrenching than I have suggested.
Mat 1:23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." From this verse we see, Mary conceived being a virgin, and brought forth her Son being a virgin, of course she wasn't a virgin after the birth. I simply can't believe that the influence of the RCC has caused many writers to believe that Mary did not have more children. Not only that but remained a virgin even after giving birth to Jesus. Scripture plainly tells us that Jesus had brothers and sisters. I believe that it is RCC doctrine that Mary was married before and had those children by her first husband who died. Wow, if that is true, which it's not, how did she retain her virginity? To that I give my Chinese chant, fuwi, fuwi, fuwi!
