Bible Study WELCOME TO AN IN DEPTH STUDY OF MATTHEW'S GOSPEL.

Day 8 Sunday 9/21/14 Matthew 1:24, 25 Joseph Obeyed.

Today we are concluding Chapter one. Mike, my old buddy, had said that he felt more information on this most important event could have been useful for our study. SO, I started a new thread in "Apologetics & Theology" titled, The Incarnation...."

I love it when I see in the scriptures that either God, or an angel commands one of His people to do something, and we don't see a lot of argument from that person. They spring into action, not like Moses or Jonah to name a couple. Joseph and Mary are very good examples of what God expects from His servants.

As I mentioned before, Joseph must have sprung out of bed that morning with a new lease on life, so to speak. In V.19 it says that Joseph "resolved" to divorce Mary quietly. That word "resolved" causes me to think that Joseph spent a good amount of time languishing over the thought of separation from the apple of his eye.

For a Hebrew, who is a "just" man, this is no easy matter. Personally, I feel that Joseph spent a lot of time on his knees. Perhaps his prayer went something like this; "O Lord, I was so sure that Mary was the one who You brought into my life to be my help-meet for the rest of my life....how could I have been so wrong." Actually, his prayers were probably much more heart wrenching than I have suggested.

Mat 1:23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." From this verse we see, Mary conceived being a virgin, and brought forth her Son being a virgin, of course she wasn't a virgin after the birth. I simply can't believe that the influence of the RCC has caused many writers to believe that Mary did not have more children. Not only that but remained a virgin even after giving birth to Jesus. Scripture plainly tells us that Jesus had brothers and sisters. I believe that it is RCC doctrine that Mary was married before and had those children by her first husband who died. Wow, if that is true, which it's not, how did she retain her virginity? To that I give my Chinese chant, fuwi, fuwi, fuwi!

Mat 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
Mat 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

1. When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey.
(Refrain)

3. But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey.
(Refrain)

4. Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we'll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.
(Refrain)

Mr. TOG. Would you please word your response different than a blunt "You're mistaken" because that invites a debate. Perhaps, "I see it different, or something like that which would be less blunt. Thank you my friend.

Please tell me you're kidding. I would have thought it was obvious that my comment was intended to be humorous. Do you really think I intended to start a debate about which page of the newspaper we should read first?

Virginity is not about a physical condition it is about having intercourse. Mary was still a virgin after she had the baby Jesus. The reason I don't believe she stayed a virgin all her life is because of what this verse says.
KJV
Mat 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
Mat 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

RCC teaches that Joseph was a widower and had Jesus' sisters and brothers with his first wife.
That they were brothers and sisters only in name. They teach the Joseph and Mary lived celibate lives together always.

When I and my RCC friends and I run into people (RCC) that tout that tradition we will send them to the library (I used to know the titles) to take a look at traditions. The ladies, back then, married young but the men were not even allowed to read the Song Of Solomon until they were thirty because it was too racy. So, except Joseph was an unworthy man (and he wasn't) he would have only had three or four years to produce those children and they would still be, extremely, young when he married Mary.

People hold to these silly ideas because they do not study. I am often instructed that all they need is the Bible and I often write them off at that point, knowing they are lazy and, likely, have not read the Bible through either. Today, or in the last four or five hundred years people have been convinced that love is sex and in the first century AD they knew better and in spite of their sinful condition, they were much more restrained and controlled their bodies, much, better.

Were that the case they should have never married. A marriage unconsummated is kind of a fraud.:twocents

Legally, Joseph knew* the only option to a quiet divorce was stoning Mary to death for adultery. (He, being righteous, could not and would not have married her if she had been unfaithful.) Stoning was the penalty/shame/judgment she faced, like any betrothed bride if found to be unfaithful.

*until the angel spoke to him.

Not everyone is as alert as you. Word's with no explanation can be taken several ways. Please don't take offense.

today's topic

Mat 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Day 9 Monday 9/22/14 Matthew 2:1 Wise Men Came.

Mat 2:1 "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem."

As we begin chapter two of Matthew, it's important to identify foundation aspects to the life of Jesus, the Christ of God.

Bethlehem: The town of Jesus' birth is about six miles South of Jerusalem. Not only the birth place of Jesus, I remember Bethlehem as the place of slaughter of all the male child's under Herod's command, but especially of Rachel who was buried there by Jacob. It's as if she was raised from the dead because of the prophesy of Jeremiah 31:15 "Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not." Bethlehem indicates Jesus as being from the tribe of Judah. Also indicates the tribe that produced King David.

Wise men: They are thought by some as holy believers in YHWH, but were far from that. The wise men were only wise in Persia. They actually were magicians, and astrologers who came about two years after the birth of Jesus. For years I thought they came to worship the baby Jesus as depicted in the many pictures or Christmas display depicting Joseph, Mary, farm animals, and the wise men, all in a little stable.

Herod: Probably Herod the great, appointed King of the Jew's by the authority of Rome. No wonder Herod wanted him killed, here is competition for his crown. Herod was a vicious ruler as well as a master builder who ordered the building of incredible structures, the most important to the Jews was their Temple.

I'm confused. You say that "Mary was still a virgin after she had the baby Jesus." How is that possible? Do you believe RCC teaching?

totally apart from the RCC As part of the meracial she could have still been a virgin... God can do as He wishes ....Could she have remained virgin having never known a man?
The this verse comes into play at 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

??

Mary was a virgin by definition, unless there's another definition different ? , until she and Joseph consumated their marriage .
