I'm not completely sure, but I suspect the grim reaper is a variation on this guy (the one on the right).
This old man, whom we see every year in our local newspapers, is actually Chronos, the Greek god of time. He has a sickle, because he was also the god of agriculture. There's someone else who's also a variation on the same Greek god. Chronos was believed to have been the first god. His reign was a "golden age". He was later exiled by the other gods to the uttermost north, but he returned once a year, at the winter solstice, bringing peace and joy to all men. Is there anybody you know of who lives in the "uttermost north" and comes to visit us at the winter solstice every year, bringing with him peace and joy for all?
Like I said, I'm not completely sure about the grim reaper, but it would be interesting if all three of them were related.
