what are you listening to right now?

PS: questdriven: Yes, I've heard of bowlderizing; there was some Victorian Reverend Bowlder who even tried to re-write the Bible to make it seem more genteel...

I heard that he made some versions of Shakespaire's works altering some potentially offensive or scary parts...but at the same time he did tell people to check out the originals.

Maybe, but Netflix has a habit of removing anime after a while. Plus Naruto and DBZ have several hundred episodes, and I doubt Netflix has them all. I do plan to get it streaming sooner or later.

Cruncyroll is a good site to watch anime on, but they're mainly licensed to air the Japanese versions. So if you want an English dub you have to look elsewhere.

And anime that's aired on TV tends to be overly censored. Well, unless we're talking Toonami, which is part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Toonami airs anime late on Saturday nights.

I just checked they don't have DBZ at all, and Naruto they don't stream.

Oh, it was Shakespeare, was it? rather than the Bible.
He might have done that, too. I haven't read much on him.
If so, he might not have been trying to change the Bible necessarily, but rather make it seem more presentable to an audience, as in a play or something....if I recall, that's something like what he was doing with Shakespeare.

I think I see what you might mean. Kind of, if it depicts stringy bikinis, for example, it might be thought of as somewhat more raw and immediate than for prime time children's viewing, or whatever.
Something like that...
Anyway, I get the idea that what I said was more the case of anime aired in the '90s than of anime available now. Or at the very least there are more companies that realize that there is a growing adult and teenage audience that likes anime.

Anyway, so you think some of the anime have been bowlderized? when you say it was censored. Maybe so. Funny, because in schools these days they seem to teach a lot of hair-raising stuff; up here, a judge legalized women going topless (not that I advocate this remotely).

I guess there are various aspects to anime, in any case.

I'm mostly thinking of anime that aired in the '90s, I think. Like Pokemon. I'm not a Pokemon fan, but I have heard of things being censored and the dub altering storylines. As well as some episodes completely banned, for what sound like dumb reasons to me.
Also my brother was telling me about something in a Naruto episode and when he went to find a clip of it to show me all we could find was a recording off DisneyXD and they changed the dialogue completely. That is a kid's channel, though, and I can see why the scene was changed for that.

Seems like you think they should usually leave the anime in its original form, basically.

Blessings.

Not necessarily. If the anime is being aired on a channel for kids, then by all means censor anything child-inappropriate. (Okay, maybe not by ALL means...)
But it'd be nice if the kid's version wasn't the only version available. Which it usually isn't anymore.

And hey, if I thought it should be left strictly in it's original form I'd be one of those "subs over dubs" people. xD I prefer watching anime in my own language, thanks. Some (not all) of those people are super annoying and are always puting the English dub down, saying all English dubs suck...when in more recent years companies have been better a producing good quality English dubs, especially since there's a wider audience now than there was in the '90s.
I'm pretty sure fewer dub companies alter the translation than before, too. Now if they do alter it in any significant fashion, like completely changing the dialogue and/or storyline, then we have a problem.

Well, okay. I think I see what you mean. Anyway this whole bowlderizing thing (and I think you raise a valid point) reminds me a bit of one or two comments on the tattoo threads to the effect that some people reckon that, faith based or not, they are just not 'genteel' enough, supposedly; but then it could be said, hey, this is what real life is like, including for many Christians. But that's for another topic.

I think that in the realm of music there are two cultures side by side; the music and lyrics, and then the videos. Sometimes the artwork and videos have come to be such an integral part of the whole musical production that it becomes hard to separate them. I'm thinking of something like, for example, Cyndi Lauper's Time after Time (I'm not sure about the lyrics, but the video of her showing with a short haircut has become kind of integral to the song, I guess.) I'm sure there are other, and better, examples, too.

Two cents'.

Blessings.

There's a dubbing company called 4Kids that gets a lot of hate for their censorship. Like, tons. I don't think they deserve all the hate they get. But having seen some of both versions of one of the shows they dubbed...yeah, I think they censored some things that didn't need to be censored. But they're doing it for kids, kids don't care.
They say 4Kid's voice actors suck, too. Maybe or maybe not, but again...kids don't care. Teenagers and adults do, though.

Would I watch 4Kids? No, get me Funimation any day of the week. lol Decent voice actors (most of the time, at the very least) and no bowdlerizing.

Deborah13: So for how long have you and Lexy been into anime? :)

Blessings.
Naruto and DBZ have been around a while. I remember DBZ coming on Cartoon Network in 2004. I think they're both still going today, too.
Actually, I think the DBZ franchise was around in the '80s, too.

The URL might be the problem. Is the video on YouTube part of a playlist?

No it wasn't. I'll try the same song again but by a different artist.

It wouldn't let me do it again. A flag comes up and says this media can not be embedded. I haven't had this problem before. I know it used to give me trouble if I did not take the "S" out of the HTTPS, but that is not necessary here at the new forum. Weird.
