It's his fault! He gave her a Windows Computer and the instructions. In addition to Linux Ubuntu being virus free, it is free of crashes, and it does not hurt your pocket book at all.

He also didn't ask pertinent questions that would have allowed her to properly correct the situation!
(I've discussed Linux Ubuntu with my computer 'guru' as I don't like Windows 10 or the current Windows 10.1. Sometimes, perhaps summer, we'll both be upgrading to Linux!)

I just about need a degree in IT to move from Windows to Linux. My son is a Linux Ubuntu guru and works for a Linux organisation. He's of the view that his old man is too advanced in Windows indoctrination to make the big leap to Linux Ubuntu.
I use Windows 7 and Word 2003 - STILL.

I just about need a degree in IT to move from Windows to Linux. My son is a Linux Ubuntu guru and works for a Linux organisation. He's of the view that his old man is too advanced in Windows indoctrination to make the big leap to Linux Ubuntu.

2If you can navigate the intricacies of word, Libre office writer would be a breeze. Pity word killed 'word perfect' though.
No doubt you son will have told you that you can run a live cd (USB stick) for evaluation purposes without touching your windoze installation....just thought I'd mention it for any other readers who might like a 'no risk' trial of Linux or Ubuntu or any of the other flavours kicking about out there.

G'day calvin. Happy New Year to you. If I had the time I could learn Ubuntu and I have Libre Office on my PC (I have previously used Open Office).
But there is an additional problem. In 2015 I completed my PhD in NT with a 488pp dissertation (dissertation-only in the British/South African system) and have a guess what? I have to turn those 488pp into a massive array of journal articles and most journals want submissions in MS Word. I've made inquiries and Word is the favoured processor. So, I'll write my 50+ articles in Word before I even think of Ubuntu.
I used to be a Word Perfect DOS user - my first word processor. WP waited too long to go into windows and lost market drive. It's a shame because it was a great word processor in my early days a the PC.

Not so Oz. Your son sounds like me and loves to poke around in the system. I have converted a number of Windows Users and when you move from 7 to 10.1 you will have about the same amount of trouble moving over.Bill,

I have a licensed copy of 10 but it is a nightmare.

I have win 10 and I quite like it.
My laptop is a 2 in 1 with touch screen so it also acts as tablet (a big one at that, 15" screen).
I think win 10 is good when used with a touchscreen. If not it's the clunkiest piece of software you could ever work with.

Thanks Calvin. I've been using this system for so long I don't even think about the live DVDs and the live USB Sticks I use all the time for others to get the feel on their units. And Ubuntu asks if you want to dual boot and leave your windoze in place. And you do not loose your windoze files, just because you are using a Linux system. Ubuntu and all Linux will access and write to your windoze files, quite unlike windoze. Oh, did I mention the entire install, drivers and all, actually, takes less than 30 minutes, even for thye beginner?G'day and best New Year wishes, calvin here.

By installing Wine Ubuntu runs Word. And if you do have some software that has issues there is Crossver from Code Weavers for $60.00 US.

Not at all. An icon to the Software Center is on your left hand side and just like the Apples, move the cursor to bump the left side of the screen and your Launchers float out for you to launch the progam of your choice. Select the Software Center andf type wine into it and select Install and type your password when asked. Wait for it to ask you for your notice to agree to the MSTTF fonts, click Agree and when finiswhed, close the program. There are over forty thousand Packages available that are for just about anything from business to gaming aqnd they are all free. There are also programs you can purchase but I doubt you will ever need them. I purchased Crossover, only because they beat the Wine people on compatability for a windoze game I purchased.Now you're talking about the degree in IT I need!

My son is doing a a degree in maths with computing science, software engineering and all that.
I actually qualified as a Systems Analyst and design engineer in the early days of IT in business.
Implemented a computerised LAN with a WAN when I worked in London for the Zambian Govt (indirectly)
I didn't continue in that a went on to be an accountant.
I'm rather hoping that when he graduates and progresses with it he will remember what I taught him in his formative years with computers.
I have said to him, when you graduate and earn mega bucks and stick me in a old people's home make sure it's a home that I've always wanted and to become accustomed to. When you have kids of your own you'll know what I'm talking about.

Well! It is rumored and I'll bet Abide can tell us if it's true, but it is told to me that ubuntu is a common word in much of the African Continent and that it means free or free beer in some countries. And this wine is free and I have been partakin of it since '07. It's pretty good stuff.
