drunkeness

i do not believe there is a simple yes or no type answer...
1Co_6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Rom_14:21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
Tit_2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

Joh_4:46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

1Ti_5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

It's actually quite clear on the issue. The way for it to stay clear though is to keep the Bible itself as the rule for it all.

If you read about Noah after the flood and a few descriptions in Ecclesiasties, it's clear what drunkenness actually is. You will find descriptions of people who don't know what they are doing or what's being done to them and just general not ordinary function(mostly in the way of motor skills). People have tried to change the definition to be extremely strict, but that's just people and not God. We will all be judged according to His standards, not some holier than thou firebrand preacher that's probably got his own fire to contend with.

The first argument was with God...But the violence was taken out on a brother.

But the first two times that wine is mentioned in the Bible is Noah and then Lot and his daughters... Neither instance had positive outcomes.

They called Jesus a drunk too because he drank wine...They said John the Baptist was possessed by a demon because he drank no wine at all.

People point wagging fingers for any and every reason... Doesn't make a single one of them true...

But a false accuser is synonymous with Satan.
 
Since humans prove over and over and over again that we don't seem to be too good at knowing the line between legitimate consumption and drunkenness I'm of the opinion that the filthy stuff should not be in a Christian home. Alcohol is a dead end street. Don't see how far you can go down it without hitting the wall at the end of it. I've never seen any good come out of alcohol consumption. Never.

I've seen a lot of self righteousness come from total abstinence as well.

So obviously there has to be some kind of middle ground.

How do you know it's self righteousness?
You don't, of course.
We're just as guilty of judging when we say someone is self-righteous (assuming they didn't tell us if they were, or not) as we are when we say someone is indulging too much.
 
Sorta maybe like this Jethro Bodine

I can not remember his name An evangelist for the 70s making the rounds ... Preaching against tobacco and alcohol .. talking about pulpit pounding shouting preaching... Spouting the scriptures PZ is talking about...

The problem was the buttons on his vest were getting ready to pop they looked like this ()
 
The first time I wanted to get totally wasted after I was born again, I felt a voice say to me. "Don't do that, you are born again."
I remember the impression I got. Do not drink to get wasted! Now I've been given some kind of reaction to me drinking even a little. My nose gets stuffed up when I even have a few sips of wine.

I toyed around with alcohol about five years ago. Not even close to getting drunk but it was clear that drinking alcohol is for getting the buzz it gives. As a Christian I realized how wrong that is because of how completely incompatible that buzz is with seeking comfort from the Holy Spirit instead. In our culture, wine is for the alcohol and the buzz it gives. My understanding is that was not so much the case in Biblical cultures.

God has not told me absolutely "no" to alcohol, but I understand what you have experienced also.
 
In some areas the consumption of alcohol is for getting drunk...Where in others it still is the safest thing to drink. There can't be a set standard...a hard and fast rule. It's as cultural as modesty is. So I can't say it's a completely wrong or right thing to do.
 
The New Testament tells us several times to be sober minded.
That rules out excess alcohol consumption as being acceptable as well as drug use for the purpose of a "high".
Stay within these guidelines and we are okay.
