For whom did Christ die? My understanding is, He died for all mankind

But what our apostle Paul says, "The wages of sin is death," Rom. 6:23, not eternal punishment in hell.

Bick,

This is what happens when you take an isolated verse, without comparing Scriptures.

Rom 6:23 states: 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord' (ESV). The answer to the first half of the verse, 'the wages of sin is death' is in the second half, 'the free gift of God is eternal life'. So the 'death' spoken of here is not physical death but spiritual death.

What is spiritual death?

Death is separation. A physical death is the separation of the soul from the body. Spiritual death, which is of greater significance, is the separation of the soul from God. In Genesis 2:17, God tells Adam that in the day he eats of the forbidden fruit he will “surely die.” Adam does fall, but his physical death does not occur immediately; God must have had another type of death in mind—spiritual death. This separation from God is exactly what we see in Genesis 3:8. When Adam and Eve heard the voice of the Lord, they “hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God.” The fellowship had been broken. They were spiritually dead (What is spiritual death? GotQuestions?).

Bick, read about the Final Judgment in Matt 25:21-46 - this is Jesus speaking. There you will discover what happens to those on Jesus' left (unbelievers): “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘You are cursed! Go away from me into the fire that burns forever. It has been prepared for the devil and his angels'" (NIRV).

In this same chapter, Jesus states, “Then they will go away to be punished forever. But those who have done what is right will receive eternal life” (Matt 25:46 NIRV). The fate of unbelievers is being punished forever, while believers receive life eternal.

Your wanting no "eternal punishment in hell" for unbelievers is not a biblical doctrine.

Agreed.

  • For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:8

Paul appealing to the predominant slave "mindset" of first century Rome, teaches them and us, about the two different ways a believer in Christ Jesus can live their life.

  1. According to the sinful desires of our flesh.
  2. According to the righteous desires of the Spirit within us.

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
Romans 6:16-19

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey:

  1. whether of sin leading to death
  2. or of obedience leading to righteousness

Paul shows us that we are to present the members of our body as a slave to righteousness, by obeying the Spirit within us, rather than presenting our members as slaves of uncleanness and lawlessness, which leads to death; Spiritual death; The second death.

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:20-23

The Key:
  • having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

There are no scriptures that teach us we are saved from natural death.

Paul is contrasting eternal life, and eternal death.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

I thought by stating that I agreed with your post, that in itself would be "addressing it".

My mistake.

Since you brought it up, there is a part that I don't agree with, though I agree with your overall point, that there is a punishment that awaits unbelievers in a literal hell.

The small part I disagree with is this statement:

Those on His left hand are His servant's, His people, His sheep, not "unbeliever's", as in "never believed".

They were unbeliever's as in "disobedient" believer's who were His servant's, His people who disobeyed His command to love.

JLB,

The context of Matt 25:41-46 states that Jesus was talking about the rewards and punishment for the sheep and goats. Of the goats, he said:

41 ‘Then he will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was ill and in prison and you did not look after me.”

44 ‘They also will answer, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or ill or in prison, and did not help you?”

45 ‘He will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”

46 ‘Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.’

The 'goats' are the ones 'cursed' and they sent to the place of 'eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (demons)'. These 'goats' 'will go away to eternal punishment.

So those on Jesus' left hand are not 'disobedient believers' as you maintain, but are the 'cursed' who are punished with the devil and his demons.

I consider that there are degrees of punishment in hell and I'm not convinced it is literal fire as hell also is called a place of darkness.

For whom did Christ die?

It depends. Do you believe in the "L" in TULIP?

How does limited atonement line up with 2 Cor 5:19 (NIV): "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation"?

Oz

I don't believe it myself, but for 5-pointers Christ only died for the elect. I'm just wondering if that's where the question is going.

So those on Jesus' left hand are not 'disobedient believers' as you maintain, but are the 'cursed' who are punished with the devil and his demons.

Matthew 25 is the culmination of what will transpire among His servants when He returns, in which the context of how He will deal with His servants begins in Matthew 24:45

Again - Those on His left hand are His servant's, His people, His sheep, not "unbeliever's", as in "never believed".

  • 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing.47 Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, 51 and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:44-51

Jesus gives the example of a servant who was made ruler over His household, in which one was wise and faithful and the other was foolish and unfaithful.

Both were His servant's that were promoted to be a ruler over His household, in which they were both given the responsibility to distribute provision to His people.

  • One was found to be doing good when He returned and the other was found to be doing evil.
  • One was obedient to the end, the other was obedient for a while, then later became disobedient.

This theme is taught throughout the the Olivet Discourse and is the context of Matthew 25:31-46, which is our subject matter.

  • For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.

14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey...
26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.

  • And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Point:

Matthew 25:31-46 is dealing with His servant's, His people, when He returns.

JLB,

You stated: "Again - Those on His left hand are His servant's, His people, His sheep, not "unbeliever's", as in "never believed".

Not true. The 'goats' in Matt 25:31-46 are those who are 'cursed' and go away into 'eternal punishment' (vv 41, 46) and they are on Jesus' left hand. I have no idea how you can call them 'His sheep' when Jesus calls them 'the goats' (Matt 26:31-33 NIV). Your statement that those on his left are 'His sheep' contradicts Scripture, which calls them the 'goats'.

The sheep are the 'righteous' (v 46) so the goats are the unrighteous who go to 'the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (demons)' (v 41).

In this narrative about the Final Judgment, it is talking about the sheep and the goats and not the faithful vs unfaithful servants.

You stated, "And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth". This verse states: And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth' (Matt 25:30 NIV).

This is not dealing with the narrative on the Last Judgment (vv 31-46) but on the parable of the talents (Matt 25:14-30 NIV).

The context for Matthew 24:31-46 begins in Matthew 24:45 whereby Jesus teaches several scenario's about His people, His servant's and what He entrusted them with, and how each will be rewarded or punished at His coming.

You both will have to do better than just deny what the scriptures actually say.

Please explain why it is you do not believe Jesus was referring to His people, and His own servants, when the scripture plainly says -

A sheep that becomes lost is likened to a sinner, that must repent or remain lost.

Lost = Sinner who is need of repentance; dead to God, in need of salvation, reconciliation to God.
Found = Someone is is reconciled to God; saved.

  • Lost Sheep:
I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7

  • Lost Coin:
Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:10

  • Prodigal Son
It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’”
Luke 15:32

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20

  • Brethren; James is writing to the Church and addressing brethren.
  • if anyone among you wanders from the truth; again anyone among you refers to Christian brothers.
  • wanders from the truth; Jesus Christ is the truth. The Gospel of the kingdom.
  • let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death;
The truth is clear, that a Christian can indeed become lost by wandering from the truth, and be considered as a sinner in need of repentance, or be lost; lose their soul in eternal death.

Yes all mankind from all nations are supposed to serve God (their creator). They know in their hearts this fact. But the issue is (again) when God judges all mankind on The Day, some are placed on the left and some on the right. Sheep go on His right, goats on the left. Could not be more clear.

Matthew 25:32-33 (LEB) 32 And all the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them from one another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right and the goats on the left.

Yet you say 'His sheep' (which BTW is not even in the Text, it's "the sheep" not "His Sheep") are on His left, in clear contradiction with Scripture.

Yes, exactly.

The context is about His coming.

What He will do at His coming, on the Day of Judgement.

Your misunderstanding of the text and context, is obvious.

I will break it down for you.

  • Who is Jesus teaching?
Answer: His disciples privately.

Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Matthew 24:3a

  • What is the context of His teaching?
Answer: The coming of the Lord, and the end of the age: The Day of Judgement.

“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3b

When Jesus comes on that Day the tares will be destroyed.

the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.

37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! Matthew 13:37-43

The only ones standing before the throne, on the Day of Judgement is wheat, not tares.

Wheat = His people, His servants
Tares = sons of the wicked one

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
Matthew 25:14

  • who called his own servants

When He returns, He will judge who among His people was faithful with what He gave them, and who was unfaithful with what He gave them.

20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what isyours.’

Matthew 25:20-31

  • His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.
  • And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Both servants were His servants.

One was faithful, the other was not faithful.

The faithful one was rewarded.
The unfaithful one was sent to hell.

Likewise, Jesus shows us exactly how it will be on the Day of Judgement, when we all must appear before Him, to give account for what we did.

9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
2 Corinthians 5:9-10

[BECAUSE]for I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.’

The reason these inherited the kingdom was BECAUSE:

I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you visited Me;
I was in prison and you came to Me.’

Just like His servants who were faithful with what the Lord gave them, in the parable, these also used what the Lord gave them to love and serve Him, by loving and serving His people.

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did itto one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

44 “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Just like the the Lord's servant who did nothing with what the Lord gave him, these also did nothing.

From what I've read Jesus died for those whom God calls to be saved under the blood of Christ's sacrifice. Not Calvinism nor Universalism but God's election as he calls whom he will to his grace. It is God that saves. We do nothing to save ourselves.

Please share the scripture that says Jesus died for those "called to be saved".

All men are called to be saved.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

The context for Matthew 24:31-46 begins in Matthew 24:45 whereby Jesus teaches several scenario's about His people, His servant's and what He entrusted them with, and how each will be rewarded or punished at His coming.
JLB

Sorry, but the context of Matt 24:31-46 (NIV) begins at v. 31.

Denying what the scripture says isn't going to change it.
Correct.
Denying that Jesus places the goats on His left (not the sheep) does not change the facts of the Text.

Both servants were His servants.
The Text says some were wicked servants and some faithful servants. Some are goats and some are sheep. Goats are placed on the left and sheep are placed on the right.
Yet your claim (still unsubstantiated) was/is, His sheep are placed on the left.

One was faithful, the other was not faithful.
Yes. Where is the one who was a faithful (sheep) who somehow became wicked and turned into a goat in this story?
It ain't there.

The unfaithful one was sent to hell
Yes, and the goats are sent to Hell. The sheep are not. The sheep are on His right, in the Text.

we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
Yes all appear before the judgment seat. Goats (wicked/unfaithful) on the left, sheep (righteous/faithful) on the right.

Your misunderstanding of the text and context, is obvious.

Matthew 25:32-33 And all the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them from one another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right and the goats on the left.

Let's test your understanding of the Text;
Are the sheep on the right or left?

Bonus question; In 1st Century Palestine Are masters of the household shepherds?

  • Who is Jesus teaching?
Answer: His disciples privately.
Then how did you here about it, if it is private? Plus, I thought you said the context begins in verse 45. Now it's v3???

The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.
Yes and goats are on the left and sheep on the right and the evil one sowed the seeds of the tares.

  • What is the context of His teaching?
Answer: The coming of the Lord, and the end of the age: The Day of Judgement.

“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3b
Well there you go with another beginning of the context. Make up your mind.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. ...

What makes you think the master in this story about the kingdom of heaven is Jesus? I thought He is like a shepherd???
