Gap Theory

Really the flood is one of Gods answers for corruption. There are 8 human souls to restore human life.

Sorry! I talk about being able to shut up, but I seem to keep on.

The flood would have to be a new thread as we need to keep this on topic and the flood has nothing to do with the OP.

the gap you are interested in Genesis 1:28 ?
No, I see a gap between Gen. 1:1a and Gen. 1:1b. Although, a deeper study could be beneficial of the word "replenish" found in v. 28. It is the same Hebrew word used in Gen. 9 when God commanded Noah to "replenish" the earth.

One thing that always puzzled me was the word replenish in Genesis 1:28. Some just say it should have been written plenish, not replenish. I use the KJV.
My main Bible is the NASB 95. I have grown found of the CSB as of late, but find myself quoting Scripture from the KJV as it is what I grew up with. Have you done a word study on "replenish?" I, personally, find word studies fascinating.

Replenish:
Strong's Concordance
mâlêʼ, maw-lay'; or מָלָא mâlâʼ; (Esther 7:5), a primitive root; to fill or (intransitively) be full of, in a wide application (literally and figuratively):—accomplish, confirm, consecrate, be at an end, be expired, be fenced, fill, fulfil, (be, become, × draw, give in, go) full(-ly, -ly set, tale), (over-) flow, fulness, furnish, gather (selves, together), presume, replenish, satisfy, set, space, take a (hand-) full, have wholly

It truly does not matter how man wants to change the wording, but can not change the order in how God created everything in His order and timing.
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (KJV)

As you say, the wording in scripture does not support a gap unless the word 'became' is inserted.

Gen 1:2 And the earth became without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

There again in Genesis 9 we see the word replenish. We know the flood wiped out all of mankind except for Noah and his family. One has to think that replenish in Genesis 1:28 could very well mean that their could have been a civilization before Adam was created. It's a conundrum :shrug

I view this as an angelic civilization before Adam. Of course, this is just a "theory," as with the Gap. I wouldn't state it dogmatically, nor would it stop me from having fellowship with other believers that do not hold to it or to the GT. There are things in Scripture that we may not fully understand, and some things God did not state unequivocally. Scripture must be compared to Scripture, and, sometimes, it is logical progression and deduction that allows us to arrive at a conclusion. And, sometimes, we just have to rest in the fact that we may never know something unequivocally, but, God does.

Replenish as in to "be fruitful and multiply."
Gen 9:1 ESV And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

Gen_1:28 (AFV) And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of heaven and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

Gen_9:1 (AFV) And God blessed Noah and his sons, and He said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.

I can't be absolutely positive if there was a gap or not as in the sense there was a civilization before Adam. In a way it could be like that of Rev 21:1 where the heaven and earth passes away and all things made new again. It could be that civilization was so full of iniquity that God did away with the heaven and earth and created a better one. :shrug

pretty much what I said depending what version you use. I use KJV.

I agree brother.

When using "re" in front of a word like replenish re is a prefix that means return. My thought, which has no basis other than being a thought, is that return means to go back to something that once was but no longer exist.

The gap theory has been debated for years, but always in theory without any absolutes. Wish we could know for sure as it would be fascinating.

I look at "re" as in redo. The Hebrew word that had been translated replenish is an interesting study.

I would like to see it clearly expounded in scripture, anyway I don't believe God gets it wrong and has to start over again. But there will be a new heaven and a new earth because man made it necessary. All I do is to keep looking to Jesus and looking for that day when we all meet in glory. May God bless you and yours. Amen. :)

Sometimes theories can make some pretty good studying into the deeper mysteries of what God wants revealed to us.

God bless you and yours :)

Beginnings can also have endings and redone over again just like the flood in Noah's day. The problem is that sometimes there are no absolutes and one can only ponder.
That is what happens to people when they get it wrong. They get overtaken by events, and are drowned in their own mire, whether it be in thought or deed. When all was done It was still the same earth. God's earth.
