"I Believe" Does That Mean I'm Saved?

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Rev 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Rev 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Rev 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Rev 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Rev 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
Rev 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Rev 21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
Rev 21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Rev 21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
Rev 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Rev 21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
Rev 21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
Rev 21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
Rev 21:18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
Rev 21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
Rev 21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
Rev 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
Rev 21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Rev 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Rev 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
Rev 21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
Rev 21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Exactly!

I love it Reba. The more I read about our new home with God the Father, and Jesus with us in the New Jerusalem, my heart quickens and my desire grows to be there, oh Glory! "Even so Jesus, come." AND, I get to fellowship with your wonderful Dad and you in person. :sohappy

When I was attending Bible College, a Professor made this statement. "If anyone says that they believe in Jesus, they are saved." Later, I came across this portion of Scripture that made me question that statement. What do you think?

John 2:23 " Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

2:24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

2:25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man."

Another passage of Scripture that goes along with my thinking is,
Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

At one time in the early years of my Salvation, I was involved in an evangelistic crusade of Billy Graham. It was probably around 1975. I was one of those who would counsel those who came forward for Salvation. Later, I became aware of a few of those who came forward to "believe", their life did not demonstrate a Christian lifestyle.

In the years following, these false professions really bothered me until I came across these two Scriptures and also,

Matthew 13:18 "Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

Mat 13:19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandethitnot, then cometh the wickedone, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Mat 13:20But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

Mat 13:21Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Mat 13:22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Mat 13:23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandethit;which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

As a result of studying these three Scripture portions, and questions in my mind about why these professions didn't last, it made sense to me and as a result, I don't just accept a persons testimony of Salvation until I know a little more about the person. I feel that way because as I come to know this person, if I see that he/she might fall into one of the "seed" stories, I hope to lead this person to the Truth.

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit whena you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

4Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tonguesb and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.

If one does not have the Spirit of Christ in them they are still on the outside of the Kingdom. (They don't belong to Jesus) Thats why I ask those who claimed to be Christians once then left/deny the faith,"How can one have the Spirit of Christ in them and not know Jesus lives?"

It's not that they don't know that Jesus lives. It's that they no longer believe, for any variety of reasons.

Jesus even addressed the issue of ceasing to believe, in the parable of the soils. In Luke 8:13, He noted those who "believe for a while, and then in time of testing/temptation/etc, fall away". Yet, He never even suggested that they either weren't initially saved, or that they lost salvation. And in the previous verse, He noted WHY Satan steals the gospel; "lest they believe and be saved".

So it is clear from this any many other verses, that once a person believes in Christ, they are saved and sealed with the Holy Spirit, as God's own possession. Eph 1:13,14. For the day of redemption. Eph 4:30, 2 Cor 1:22 and 5:5.

If they don't believe then don't they think Jesus is dead? However if they have the Spirit of Christ in them they know by that Spirit to their Spirit that Jesus lives. So if they claimed to be a Christian once and then walked away and even at some point speak against the faith then they never knew Jesus. Right?

Not necessarily. Jesus was clear about some who have believed for a while, and then fall away (from the faith) (Luke 8:13). Believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit can be grieved (Eph 5:18) and quenched (1 Thess 5:19). Acts 7:51 says that men resist the Holy Spirit.

So having the Holy Spirit within the believer isn't a guarantee that the believer will live according to God's Word. Which is why Paul and Peter and James gave all the warnings they did.

That's right Randy. When ever I come in contact with a "believe" person, I need to see or hear of "works" because faith without works is certainly dead.

What I see is the one without the Spirit is still a slave to sin. According to 1john the who is born again wont continue to sin. Again John wrote that not me. However Jesus stated remain in me and I will remain in you. But I think the case can be made that there are those who believe without the spirit and those that belong to Jesus. (Christ in us) And the one in us is greater than the one in this world. We know and cant forget or truthfully deny Jesus as the HS testifies to our spirit that Jesus lives. False teachers then don't have spirit.

What you say is true my friend. When we are biblically saved, the Holy Spirit enters our inner self and baptizes into the family of God. We then need to be immersed in baptismal waters. Many who believe in Jesus for the wrong reasons usually refuse water baptism I've noticed. The real impact in a true believer's life is when they are baptized in the Holy Spirit for His power to be witnesses for Christ Jesus.

I have never met or heard of a man or woman who believed in Jesus, was water baptized, and received the baptism in the Holy Spirit, ever live in continued sin. For that matter, ever dis-own our Savior and return to a life of sin. That's the power of being in Christ and Him is us. Praise the awesome Name of Jesus!

This is probably one of the biggest Heresy's going around in these last Days.

Teaching that people who believe the Gospel, then turn away from Christ to serve other gods, which is clearly Idolatry, are still saved, would have to be the Mother of all Heresies, and is a slap in the face of all those who chose death as a martyr rather than renounce Jesus Christ as Lord.

This is exactly what Jesus taught about turning away is the face of persecution.

But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 8:13

20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Matthew 13:20-21

Jesus said plainly -
13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:13-14

The witness is: being killed for Jesus Christ as a martyr, during the great tribulation, just before Christ returns.

9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?”
14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.”
So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Revelation 7:9-14

and again

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

9 When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held.10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”11 Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed. Revelation 6:9-11

Witness - Strong's 3142 - martyrion

A Martyr is called a faithful witness.

This is the Christians testimony of Christ, to suffer death in the face of persecution, rather than turn away from Him.

Jesus is our example. Jesus is called the Faithful and true Witness.

10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”’

What I see is the one without the Spirit is still a slave to sin.
Paul noted that we are slaves to whom we obey; whether to sin or to obedience. Rom 6:16 Paul himself noted his own struggle between his 2 natures; the sin nature and the new nature.

According to 1john the who is born again wont continue to sin.
John did not teach sinless perfection. All believers continue to sin. His point was that a believert cannot sin from his new nature, which is seen in 1 Jn 3:9.

However Jesus stated remain in me and I will remain in you.
Jesus was speaking of fellowship, which was John's point in 1 Jn 1.

But I think the case can be made that there are those who believe without the spirit and those that belong to Jesus.
Believe…what? The Bible is clear about believing in Jesus Christ for salvation. They HAVE the Holy Spirit. And they belong to Jesus. I'm not sure of your point here.

This is probably one of the biggest Heresy's going around in these last Days.

No, the biggest heresy among evangelicals is the idea that one can lose their salvation. Such a view greatly diminishes the work of Christ, and eliminates God's grace completely.

How does teaching the truth about apostasy and Idolatry diminish the work of Christ.

The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us and guide us into all truth.

All truth, whether it is Milk or Meat, is still the truth... Babes in Christ need milk, and are not accountable to the same things a more mature brother or sister in Christ is.

A Pastor or full time minister who has been walking with the Lord for 20 years and has known the way of righteousness and has receive his living from preaching and teaching God's word who plays around with sin, and become ensnared and hardened through sin, and ends up teaching Heresy or God forbid, turns to another god, such as Buddha, or the gods of the new age movement, is an idolater.

Those who have turned to homosexuality and teach this practice as an acceptable lifestyle in God's Kingdom, as a Pastor or teacher, are teaching Heresy.

Those who have decided to have sexual relations with the women, even married women in the Church and live out this lifestyle and die this way, have died in their sins as an adulterer.

This is just a small example of the things that are going on in Churches all across America in the Ministry.

Adulterers, Idolaters, Homosexuals, along with those who teach Heresy, will have their part in the lake of fire.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

JLB

How does teaching the truth about apostasy and Idolatry diminish the work of Christ.
Because Jesus Christ taught eternal security, clearly. And His Word does too.

The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us and guide us into all truth.
And some resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). And grieve (Eph 5:18) and quench Him (1 Thes 5:19).

All truth, whether it is Milk or Meat, is still the truth... Babes in Christ need milk, and are not accountable to the same things a more mature brother or sister in Christ is.
Is this a suggestion that you're not accountable for accepting the truth of eternal security????

A Pastor or full time minister who has been walking with the Lord for 20 years and has known the way of righteousness and has receive his living from preaching and teaching God's word who plays around with sin, and become ensnared and hardened through sin, and ends up teaching Heresy or God forbid, turns to another god, such as Buddha, or the gods of the new age movement, is an idolater.
So is ANY believer who puts anything before the Lord.

Those who have turned to homosexuality and teach this practice as an acceptable lifestyle in God's Kingdom, as a Pastor or teacher, are teaching Heresy.
And they will receive God's hand of discipline.

Those who have decided to have sexual relations with the women, even married women in the Church and live out this lifestyle and die this way, have died in their sins as an adulterer.
If such a one had believed in Christ, they HAVE eternal life, which is irrevocable, and they WON'T die in their sins. Their sins have been forgiven through faith in Christ (Acts 10:43). But they will have forfeited all reward in eternity.

This is just a small example of the things that are going on in Churches all across America in the Ministry.
Very sad and true.

Adulterers, Idolaters, Homosexuals, along with those who teach Heresy, will have their part in the lake of fire.
Please show me any verse that teaches that these sins were NOT born on Christ on the cross. I know you can't. And the list in Rev is about unbelievers, meaning those who never believed.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8
JLB
One has to ignore and reject a lot of Scripture to apply this verse to anyone who has ever believed.

About as sad as what's going on in churches all aqcross America.

Bottom line is that God's gifts and calling are irrevocable, and eternal life is a gift of God. This is irrefutable.

Because Jesus Christ taught eternal security, clearly. And His Word does too.

But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

So you are one of those who teach a Pastor who is born again and Baptized in the Holy Spirit, can turn to a Homosexual lifestyle, and teach from his pulpit, that homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle in God's Kingdom, and still be saved when he dies in this lifestyle?

JLB

I said this:
"Because Jesus Christ taught eternal security, clearly. And His Word does too."
But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13
Context means everything. What is the context for 24:13? The very next verse. "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come."

What is the "end" here? Clearly NOT the end of one's life, as JBL would have it. No. The chapter is about the Tribulation. Not the end of one's life.

So Matt 24:13 refers only to the Tribulation.

Those who ignore context are doomed to failure in understanding Scripture.

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:2

There is no reason to assume this verse is about loss of salvation. The issue here is about bearing fruit, or not. And the phrase about "abiding in Me and I in you" has been completely misunderstood. It's about fellowship. Believers must be in fellowship with Christ in order to bear fruit. When out of fellowship, through grieving (Eph 5:18) or quenching (1 Thess 5:19) the Holy Spirit, they cannot bear fruit.

JBL takes many verses totally out of context and tries to build a doctrine from that.

Ah, here is the real issue among those who reject eternal security. They have no concept of the meaning and action of GRACE. None whatsoever.

If a believer's lifestyle becomes offensive to them personally, they WANT that child of God to lose his salvation and to be punished for his/her sins.

And, they must also reject the FACT that Jesus Christ died for ALL sins, even those who never believe.

Those who believe are saved BY GRACE. And they are kept by that SAME GRACE. Which the conditional security folk seem to hate. By all their rhetoric and vitriol against eternal security.

The doctrine of reward clearly indicates that not all believers will be rewarded in eternity. Only the faithful ones will be. The unfaithful ones will lose out on reigning with Christ and other rewards available to the faithful ones.

But the conditional security folk don't even want them to be in heaven.

They simply don't comprehend God's matchless GRACE.

Please present your arguments on the basis of Scripture on not your own ideas. See the forum guidelines. We've repeated this enough so any further failure to follow these rules will be dealt with.

Thank you.

Context means everything. What is the context for 24:13?

Your joking right?

The context is about the great tribulation, in which there will be the greatest persecution against the Church all over the world, and many millions will be martyred.

For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

I think this pretty much covers the context, which is about enduring to the end during the greastest persecution that has ever been.

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house.18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. Matthew 24:9-22

Here is the result of the great tribulation -

...a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes...These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation,

14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. 16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:9-17
