Is hellfire real?

One of the feedbacks I've gotten from studying NDEs (I hope that term isn't annoying anyone too much yet; I'm going to use it a lot; for me it's like T3, the modern high-tech scripture) is Jesus' extreme concern that the New Age-ish idea of a lack of a literal Hell is getting way out of control. Many people in the "industry" even (preachers) have gotten away from teaching about a physical Hell. Even a pope (JPII) spoke out denouncing a "real" hell.

I also thought for quite a while that Hell was not a physical place of torment, but only a state of the soul in separation from its Creator (which is admittedly a pretty bad feeling just by itself). For the record, I no longer think that way. I believe in a real Hell, real physical (is that the right word?) torture, and hellfire.

Which hell do you believe is the Biblical hell Jesus teaches ie. the term Jesus used to define the place of fiery suffering ?

Oh, I am not the one to go to for literal Bible references. I am not a Bible scholar. I think the word "hell" is used to translate several aspects of torment, e.g. sheol, gehenna, hades, tartarus. Surely someone else here can provide more accurate information.

I'm curious since there's so much discussion on hell, and this thread is asking if hellfire is real, if you have a good understanding of what hell is. From what you've said you think sheol, gehenna, hades, and tartarus are all describing aspects of the same place ?

The phrase He used to describe this place was -

Everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

He said this to His disciples privately.

Other times, in the hearing of the Pharisee's or the multitudes that would gather around Him, He may have used the terms that were common among the people and "alluded" to the literal place that we have come to know as the Lake of Fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels, in order to torment them day and night forever and ever.

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Matthew 25:41,46

For me personally, it would be foolish at best, to ignore such phrases as everlasting fire and everlasting punishment.

I guess for others who are much more educated than me, and can see a much deeper meaning for these phrases beyond what Jesus meant, these phases may mean something else?

No, I don't think they're all the same place. I only wanted to propose a scientific theory that explains the fire that consumes the damned.

Yeah I think it's foolish to ignore what Jesus said too and in particular very foolish to misunderstand the words He used. Which word that Jesus used denotes the place of fiery punishment of the wicked ?

If anything I meant hypotheses rather than theory. "Premise" is a meaningless term in science. And I already gave my theory in post #19.

ok, I suggest studying these words and their origins in the cultures that used them. sheol. gehinnom, hades. then also the word hell. there are different in that the later is often confused for the others. most speak of gehinnom but use sheol.

tarturus is part of hades and its the lowest part of it. sheol has the same concept. its called avadon.

Imo if we are "with God" we go to heaven when we "sleep". If we die and are not "with God" we "sleep" till his return just one opinion.
