Lying

Should I lie to please men or tell the truth to please God?

Are any of you really so callous that you would tell a small child the honest truth about the quality of his or her art work brought home for you to admire?

What?
You don't think they really did a good job?

I would. im that evil.

Oh come on brother. You don't have to lie or be callous. All you'd have to do is say good effort little guy, keep practicing! Something like that.

I've never lied to my children when praising their artwork.

Lying is a sin. Only you can determine when and when not to lie or whether to lie at all.
I disagree. I don't think that every lie is a sin and if it is, then we need to seriously change the words we use to describe events.
This is the problem with black and white thinking... One event is bad, so every event is deemed bad.
I've heard preachers say that to sin, is to "Miss the mark". This has to raise the question, "Which mark" and to even view the mark, you have to understand what sin is, and what it isn't.

I know, I know... I'm thinking too much.

One thing the Law of Moses teaches us is that one must discern life events because not every law can be kept in order that another could be kept. In other words, there are laws that nullify other laws without the weight of sin being attached and I'll use David eating the shew bread as an example. Mercy always trumps and David and his men were not sinning when they ate that which was "Only" for the priests in the line of Aaron.

By way of example: Tell me why something is a sin (How it hurts another), don't just say, "It's a sin" because I've categorized it as a sin.

but if they really sucked, all your doing is withholding truth right? What's the difference between withholding the truth and not telling the truth? Either way, the truth is hidden right?

Evelyn was scolding her child about lying to her.... The phone rang she told the other child "tell them i am not here" ..

then she caught my raised eyebrow :neutral

Would that we all could carry around a "spiritual" mirror every day.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Here's your example.

John 8
43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

I see, and what constitutes a lie?
Why is lying bad?
Is there ever a time where lying can be used for the good?
