The letter to the editor I just sent:
TRUCK DRIVER SAVES A LIFE
As a local cement mixer truck driver left for work on the morning of June 30, 2014, he had no idea what was waiting for him on the roads of Cherokee County, Georgia.
As the northbound pickup truck approached the left turn to the onramp, the driver observed that there was a small traffic island at the end of the ramp, this was so that southbound traffic could turn right while northbound traffic turns left onto two lanes of the same ramp.
The driver also noticed the mixer truck traveling south, the trunk moved over into the right lane, which starts just about 300 feet north of the ramp. The driver of the pickup assumed that the mixer truck was moving over to turn right –so the pickup driver started his turn – but the cement truck was not turning. A collision was unavoidable and (since he was the only one who realized what was happening) it was up to the driver of the large and heavy cement truck to do what he could to control the consequences of what was about to happen.
As to the title above, the cement truck driver did not apply his brakes (you can't steer nearly as well with brakes applied as with no brakes applied), instead, he veered to his right – this meant that he kept control of his truck and did not strike the pickup squarely, running over it OR carrying it down the road, instead, the pickup was spun around. This was the small difference that meant life or death for the pickup driver. The full impact of the large truck hitting the smaller one was turned into a spinning action on the smaller truck. In fact, the only real g-forces on the pickup driver were from the deployment of the air bag. Had the smaller truck absorbed the full impact of the mixer, the accident would not have been survivable for the driver of the smaller vehicle.
The truck driver actually understood, well before the pickup driver did, what was going to happen and took measures to mitigate the damage.
After the collision, he cement truck continued on, but (apparently) the impact with the smaller truck had shifted the front axle of the mixer truck, causing the truck driver to lose control (heading into a ditch did not help matters), the truck overturned and came to rest on its side.
Had the truck driver panicked and applied brakes, it is questionable if he could have altered his trajectory enough to avoid a more dead-on impact with the pickup. This is what made the difference, all the difference.
The pickup truck driver was horrified and thought the other driver had to have been injured or worse, and commanded a bystander to "please go see how he is". Soon, the driver emerged from his cab uninjured. That driver was Ricky ####, the most calm and cool mixer operator that I, the driver of the pickup, have ever met. (And due to the work I do, I have known many mixer drivers in my career.) Had Mr. #### not responded exactly as he did, I do not believe I would have survived.

No liability rests on your shoulders in this matter, Pizza . The cement truck driver chose to take the actions he took. He didn't have to. Hopefully, his employer will see what a valuable employee he has; Ricky put life ahead of destruction. He saw what was happening and did what he could to avoid someone being killed. Ricky, his employer, and you are in my prayers.

It is sad that this bothers me so much, that I contacted the paper and they are not running my letter. I shall submit the letter after the insurance claims are over with.
I have not heard from MY insurance adjuster, but I did hear from his - the guy wanted to know, of course, how I was doing and if I was injured. He then asked for contact info on my adjuster, which I don't have so I gave him my H.R. manager's phone number.
I honestly think they are afraid I am some dishonest screwball that is going to sue them (and I HAVE heard of people suing truckers when it was not the trucker's fault - and winning.)
I would NEVER do that.

Of course his insurance is concerned that you will sue the company. After all, the truck driver did hit you, albeit with excellent reason/motive. However, you're not the sort to lie about the matter & pursue court action, knowing what you know. You're right, though, about there being lots of people who sue truckers & win, when the situation wasn't the truckers' fault. That's ridiculous...and rather sad.

You know, I am working in a small town in Kentucky this week. I think I am going to go see a local lawyer and see if he/she thinks that my letter is in any way a bad idea.
OR, I could wait for MY adjuster to talk to me - and ask him, since it is my insurance I am afraid of "causing a problem for..."
I feel so much for that driver, his boss, etc. This bothers me more than the accident itself.

I would wait to discuss the matter with your adjuster. Your explanation just might take any potential fangs out of the situation.
Something you might consider doing, but only if after prayer you are led to do so: every so often, buy a gift card to a restaurant or grocery store or gas card and send it to the guy who hit you. (You can send it anonymously, if you wish ... just enclose a brief note that says "God bless you!") He was your guardian angel at the moment you needed assistance. Or.... you could send a gift card for a pizza place, etc, to the business, with a note saying "Enjoying a meal is only for the living ... and I'm thankful to be alive...enjoy lunch" or something of your preference. In the overall scheme of life, it's not much, but at least it is something.

Thank you, Eboni. I ended up having the procedure and the doctors are reasonably sure my meds will keep the condiiton from returning. Should it return, there are other things they can do for me.
But my condition was likely brought on by stress and worry - and I have changed since then and don't feel such stress anymore. God has led and taught me thru all of this.
