If we were left at the hands of strict literalists we'd still be tossing virgins down volcanoes to satisfy the gods.An idea of how I imagine the feeling meant to be conveyed by the idea of God coming on clouds in judgement..

I made some simple spiritual observations about 'air' that have nothing to do with physical air we breathe, and like matters from the scriptures such as the Kingdom of God being in us and Christ being revealed again, in us.
Physically flying through physical air into physical clouds is not a credible sight to some in the face of other legitimate sights provided by the scriptures.
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?
