Bible Study The Doctrine of Christ

1 Corinthians 6:9 speaks about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that we receive when we are Spiritually born again from above. If you are truly born again from above this means you have risen with Christ and seek those things from above where Christ sits at the right hand of God, Colossians 3:1-4. This includes studying and understanding the doctrines of Christ as we are led through the teachings of Christ by the Holy Spirit who is our teacher and also works through others to help teach us.

What is the O.P. about?

1. The church has problems because we don't all understand scrpture the same way.

2. Some quote Paul over Jesus and you'd think Paul hung on that cross.

3. Paul agreed with Jesus...WHO WOULDN'T?

4. I like to go to Jesus when I have some doubt.

5. We should be like the Bareans and check everything with scripture....but we seem to come up with differing ideas.

In #5 you hit the nail on the head.

Why do people come up with different ideas of what is written is because many teach ideology and not that which Christ has already taught. Many who teach us only have a carnal understanding, even if they say the Holy Spirit taught them as we hear many times, but only that of what others have taught them of the clergy. These type of people are called Pastor followers as they believe everything that comes from the pulpit.

In Rev 2:18-29 Jesus warned about the spirit of Jezebel that seduces those who do not follow the doctrines of Christ as this has caused division in the church. God never established denominations or non-denominational churches as God established His true Church being the body of Christ steeped in the doctrines of Christ for what He taught that isn't that hard to understand.

Today, there are many things being taught to God’s children in churches, and online websites and Forums.

Yet, there is really one thing needed; The Truth; The words of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the truth, and every word that proceeds out of His mouth is the Truth.

His Gospel
His Commandments (Law)
His Doctrine

I had hoped in this thread, we could discuss the subject of the doctrine or teachings, or sayings of Christ.

His Message
His Word

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32

If we remain or continue in His word, we are His disciples indeed, and we ourselves shall know the truth, and by knowing the truth we shall be made free.

No wonder the enemy seeks to distract us from His doctrine.

  • Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24-27

  • Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. 2 John 9-12

Sobering stuff.

Yet very necessary for each of us to grow up into Christ.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14

I believe the Lord would have us embrace some of the weightier things of His word, and lay aside our childish ideas about what He expects from the Church.

His doctrine, and commandments are summed up in this:

Loving God and loving people.

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. 1 John 4:20-21

However, I believe we may have different ideas about what love is, from His perspective.

Hopefully we can discuss some of these things here in this thread.

God is Love...
Love covers a multitude of sins. 1Peter 4:8

Love covers the commandments.
Love God with ALL your heart, love your neighbor as yourself.

If you Love God with all your heart, you would not have other gods, you would not steal, you would not bear false witness, you would not covet and so forth..

As One stated, 1 Cor.13:13, but the greatest of these is love.
Even though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand ALL MYSTERIES, and ALL KNOWLEDGE, have all faith, and move mountains, and have not charity, I AM NOTHING.

However, I believe we may have different ideas about what love is, from His perspective.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

If I know all mysteries and have faith that moves mountains.... but I am committing adultery with my neighbors wife, then what do these things profit.

....though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but... I am constantly lying to my neighbor then what do things things accomplish.

Here’s a thought.

...though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but I am teaching my neighbor heretical doctrine that causes him to depart from the faith, what good are these things?

If you have all knowledge and understand all mysteries, how can you teach heretical doctrines?
That is why we study, show ourselves approved, 2Tim.2:15

Don't take any man's word for it.
If the doctrine doesn't line up with the words of God, don't believe it.

Everyone of us shall give account of HIMSELF to God. Rom.14:12

But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, shall teach you all things and bring all things to remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 14:26

We have THE BOOK!

Proverbs is a great book to read about wisdom and understanding.

Because you add to the mysteries and knowledge things that are not from God.

Furthermore, Paul was using a legal argument to make a point, and I was following his lead.

Maybe this might be better...

If I understand mysteries and have knowledge of biblical things and great faith, but I am teaching my neighbor heretical doctrine that causes him to depart from the faith, what good are these things?

Paul is making a point.

No one understands all mysteries or has all knowledge except God Himself.

Well Diane,
Actually, if I'm to be honest, I'm getting a little tired of hearing about God's love.

I don't go to church much anymore, and my priest knows why although I haven't spoken to him in some time....

But he's a very nice person, about 73 or so and very pastorial. (is that a word?) Very helpful to everyone and even gives some of his small priest income away to those in need.

But when I do go to Mass, all I ever heard him speak of was the love of God.

In the meantime, catholic friends of mine are living sans the marriage vows and THANKING JESUS THEY FOUND A GOOD COMPANION. 18 year old kids going on vacation together because they're OF AGE and it's OK, everyone is doing this and how could a parent say no?

Now, please don't preach to me about the heart condition...I KNOW THE SCORE. The problem is these people BELIEVE they are good because they go to church and know Jesus in some way or other.

Why do they do what they do? Because they've never heard any priest say they SHOULD NOT.

So, instead of talking about LOVE all the time,,,maybe we could find out what this LOVE MEANS? Maybe we could find out HOW to love God? Maybe we could learn what is accepted in Christianity and what is not?

And just so you remember correctly,
I am Protestant.

my overall point was that the RCC is the standard faith where you are, and the SBC is standard where I am. I think they just...got too comfortable with the world, too enmeshed in the surrounding culture.

I agree on all you've said.

What I must say, however, is that it is the Church that is the true Church of Christ,,, but we also need churches. This goes back to what I was trying to say about tradition.....humans need something they could grasp onto...they DO need an institution...I don't think Jesus meant for the Apostles to set up only a Church, but also a church where men could go to learn.

We do need to congregate (Hebrews), we do need to get together and read and worship and have communion and edify each other.

It's just that we're becoming so far removed from how Christianity used to be right at the time of Jesus and shortly after...by shortly I mean a couple to 300 years.

What is amusing to me is that Protestantism is becoming more and more split and getting farther from the Doctrine of Christ,
while the catholic church, which went WAY BEYOND what the bible taught is trying to get back to the basics.

I just think we need both:
The church
THE Church

my overall point was that the RCC is the standard faith where you are, and the SBC is standard where I am. I think they just...got too comfortable with the world, too enmeshed in the surrounding culture.
Oh. Yeah, that's right.

I'd say that the CC got too comfy when it was the only church around...after 325 AD and before 1,500 AD and the reformation.

It didn't know what to do so in the council of Trent it REINFORCED its beliefs instead of trying to pay attention to what Luther had done and become more "modern". (although I don't like modernism).

Right now the CC is trying to become more biblical, but it has a long road ahead because my friends are catholic and we discuss and what I hear is that they do not want change.

i dunno what to do. i dont fit in with the conservative Christian crowd...although, oddly enough, 1 on 1 they generally like me...

and the 'progressive' Christians? pshaw. they wring their hands over "the plight of mentally ill," etc., but if I rolled up to their church--reasonably well dressed, normal-ish, intelligent, but a local label of "Schizophrenia," plus the whole not heterosexual deal--it'd be over. and that would be before any serious discussion of doctrine, lifestyle, outlook, etc. -sigh-

so far...i stay home. i have my older, wiser Christian friend (77 or so) who talks to me. she's old school Pentecostal, and I'm glad to have her in my life.

this isn't to say I'm "too good" for any local church, just...the nature of -me- , my community labels, the whole shebang, kinda make staying home and having sunday meals with mah parents a whole, whole lot more appealing than church.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26

  • He will teach you all things

This includes studying and understanding the doctrines of Christ as we are led through the teachings of Christ by the Holy Spirit who is our teacher and also works through others to help teach us.

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

This is the promise of the New Covenant.

No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:33-34

The Lord will teach us His doctrine, and bring to light things we need to understand, by His Spirit within us.

Amen.

That's the problem, they rely on their Pastors!
Most folks pick up their Bibles only when they go to church.
Have they not read that they shouldn't commit adultery?

Some Pastors do not like to step on people's toes, it might make the collection plate a little lite.
Some may not know the meat of the Word.

Love is very important!
One should also teach tough love.
You can't just let your kids go wild.

Even if they do preach what is right or wrong, doesn't mean they are going to listen.
Depends on where your heart is.
