The picture is an entrenched meander, this one in the grand canyon. They cannot be formed in a year or even a human lifetime, since they form by eroding into rock in an area undergoing slow uplift.
Obviously, such a feature could not possibly form in soft sediments.
You've probably heard the creationist story that Grand Canyon-like features formed at Mt. St. Helens in a short time.
