The Gospel Plus "NOTHING"

Acts 2 is about the Gospel coming into the world in the power of the Holy Spirit. Before Pentecost the apostles had no idea of what the Gospel was.
Acts 2 is not about the gospel coming into the world. Acts 2 is about the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles for power for their mission.
Jesus told them to "stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Lk 24:49)
He didn't tell them to wait until they were give a new gospel.

Of course the apostles knew what the gospel was. They had been with Jesus for three years being taught by him.
Jesus told them "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Mt 28:19-20)

What did the apostles hear on the day of Pentecost? They heard about the wonderful works of God, Acts 2:11. Which is the Gospel. They heard that Jesus had defeated sin, death and the devil and in doing so had reconciled them and the world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19.

It was the Cretans and Arabs who heard about the mighty works of God from the Apostles.

"Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” (Acts 2:11)

Jesus taught the apostles for three years. He promised them the Holy Spirit would "bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." (Jn 14:26) - not the Holy Spirit would tell them to forget all Jesus taught them and give them a different gospel.

Jesus told the apostles "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Mt 28:19-20). Do you think Jesus was lying to them and that they were to teach something different?

They went into the world teaching the death and resurrection of Jesus as the only means of their salvation, Romans 6:3-14. Which is the Gospel. Jesus has reconciled us and the world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. But you don't believe. You think that the Catholic church is going to reconcile you to God. Not going to happen.

The apostles didn't learn about the death and resurrection of Jesus at Pentecost.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John recorded all that Jesus did in our name. The apostles witnessed it all and Jesus said they were to witness that to the world.
Luke writes in Acts:
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God........But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:1-3 & 8)

And in Acts 2 they taught this
"Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.....This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear. (Acts 2:22-24 & 32-33)

The apostles received the Gospel of the day of Pentecost, Acts chapter 2, it was accompanied by the Holy Spirit. 8,000 heard and believed and were saved. This is why Paul wrote, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (which is the Gospel) Romans 10:17.

Look at the whole of that section.
They hear Peter and are "cut to the heart".
They ask “Brethren, what shall we do?”

Peter says "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Belief was not enough. They needed to repent and be baptised.

Then (vs 41)
"So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls."
Those who believed were baptised and then they were saved, not just when they believed.

The Gospel of the Kingdom is not the Gospel that brings the Holy Spirit and causes us to be born again.

Paul preached the gospel of the kingdom.
"For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14:17)

"He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son" (Col 1:13)

"These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me." (Col 4:11)

And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God (Acts 19:8)

And he expounded the matter to them from morning till evening, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. (Acts 28:23)

And many more.

Nope it was 3,000, Acts 2:41. Next day 5,000 Acts 4:4. 8,000 all together.

Peter didn't really understand the Gospel and justification by faith. He had to learn it from Paul, Galatians 2:11-14.

All that baptism is going to do for you is get you wet. Paul didn't know who he had baptized, 1 Corinthians 1:10-17.

And how does that change anything?
Peter didn't really understand the Gospel and justification by faith. He had to learn it from Paul, Galatians 2:11-14.

Peter understood the need for both faith and baptism because Jesus told him both faith and baptism was required (Mt 16:16).

Wrong again. Baptism is when we receive Christ's saving work.

Paul didn't know who he had baptized, 1 Corinthians 1:10-17.

He knew some whom he had baptised. But what does it prove that he could not remember all of them?
(answer = it proves nothing)

We Receive Christ's saving work by faith, not by works.

"In whom you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, THE GOSPEL OF YOUR SALVATION: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise" Ephesians 1:13.

Paul was not interested in baptism, "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel: not with words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect" 1 Corinthians 1:17.

Baptism is simply a ritual statement that you've buried the old person and have risen as the new creation in Christ. It's nice to make that "statement" publicly but it is not required.

We Receive Christ's saving work by faith, not by works.
We receive Christ's saving work in baptism when we come to hime with faith.
"He who believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mk 16:16)
Faith + Baptism = Salvation.

"In whom you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, THE GOSPEL OF YOUR SALVATION: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise" Ephesians 1:13.

We are sealed with the Holy Spirit in baptism.
"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (Gal 3:27).
" But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee." (2Cor 121-:22)
When we are clothed with Christ we have been put into Christ and God gives us the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Just as was prophesied by Ezekial (Ez 36:25-27):
Paul was not interested in baptism, "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel: not with words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect" 1 Corinthians 1:17.

Yes, Paul's primary mission was to preach. He could leave others who travelled with him to perform the baptisms.
But Paul was interested in baptism.
He detected a problem with the 12 men at Ephesus (Acts 19) and asked how they had been baptised. When he found they had only been baptised in John's baptism he immediately had them baptised "in the name of the Lord Jesus" - baptised into Christ.

Or are you unaware that we who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.
(Rom 6:3-4)

“..he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:5)

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1Cor 6:11)

You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead (in) transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; (Col 2:11-13)

"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (Gal 3:27).

" But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee." (2Cor 121-:22)

In your personal opinion.

There are two different kinds of baptism. There is water baptism and then there is spiritual baptism. We are spiritually baptized unto Christ when we believe the Gospel,

"This only would I learn of you, did you receive the Spirit by the works of the (because you did something) of the law, or by the hearing of faith? (hearing and believing the Gospel) Galatians 3:2.

Mungo as an RC is answering everything you post. Stay in the bible Mungo!

Here is a question for you. If Jesus has ALREADY reconciled us and the world unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. Then what good is your Calvinist religion or any religion?
It is really good when you understand the great Covenant salvation taught in the bible.

No we are not. We are baptised into Christ by (water) baptism.
We receive Christ's saving work in baptism when we come to him with faith.
"He who believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mk 16:16)
Faith + Baptism = Salvation.

That is your Catholic doctrine. Paul says that we are saved by faith, Ephesians 2:8-9. Nothing about baptism. Since Paul is a New Covenant Christian, I will believe Paul.
