some people don't have a walmart
they think it's some kind of large general store
and that it is
But I live out in the sticks and the only store we have is walmart
everyone goes there just like a general store back in the day

We have a Walmart, I don't think we have any Kmarts though. Of course I think that they have pretty much done away with all the Kmarts anyway.

The pix reminded me of a small general store back in the 50's.
Robotti's. They sold everything. In Astoria NY.
Every neighborhood had one. You knew the owner by name.
They had these big roles of brown paper held by an intricate, black, wrought iron roller...
Everything got wrapped in that.
They sold material, toys, school books, everything you could need.
Of course, times were simpler and we needed less.

Yes!
Later on, we had a candy store.
All they sold was candy, and being no dummies, they were located across the street from my elementary school.

Just remember through all this that I'm only 38 years old.

What about you?
How about a soda shop?
What was the name of that drink...?

A frappe
And the original Friendly ice cream stores had awful awfuls
 
My little 4 light town has a walmart; I do not use it. we have a Rite Aid pharmacy, Food Lion, Lumber Store, Ace and a furniture store, an the Internet. where I grew up in Florida Panhandle we had one General Store, Miss Elsie's had 90% of what we needed to keep from driving 35 miles into town.
 
In Israel they have "IKEA".
This is sort of a "Swedish Walmart".
NOW< they have them in the USA.
Best thing about them?....they have an upstairs cafeteria that is very good.
You take a tray, you choose what you want them to serve you, (the filet of Red Fish is excellent) , and for a reasonable price.
Walmart (Superstore) gives you a Subway sandwich in the back, and greasy chicken fishy stuff in the front.
(be sure to bring your TUMS)

There are two Ikea's over here. One in Pisa and one near Florence -- I could go to either.

Next time I'll try the cafeteria...

This pic was in the 1930's but was still the General Mercantile when I was a kid growing up in the 50's through the 70's. It was built in the 1800's. You could buy everything there from food to household goods, sewing supplies and also farming supplies and gasoline (notice the two gas pumps on the left). Candy was a penny, but the owner always threw in a few extra pieces. Everything was so old fashion back then and so many good memories of that store. Walmart could never compare to the Mercantile Store.
 
Where we live now I shop three different stores starting with Giant Eagle then to Save-A-Lots and then to Walmart for things I can't get at Save-a-Lots. Giant Eagle is to expensive so only buy hubbies Pepsi there as it's always on sale and buy one get one free in the meat dept. Our Walmart here is not a super center and unfortunately I do have to shop there. I really do not like them because they have forced out so many good businesses that use to be around.
 
I now have a BANK -- INSIDE Walmart -- 1st Convenience Bank; open 7 days a week...
Used to grocery shop at Walmart - now there is an Aldi's - better for food

When I was a kid, we walked a block to "PIGGLY WIGGLY"
I don't see any of them anymore

Piggly Wiggly and Jitney Jungle both seem to have gone by the wayside.
 
You're likely to find all sorts of other stores and accommodations inside a super Walmart. From banks to commercial restuarants.
They put the local K-Mart out of business. I worked there in my first job when I was 16.

Walmart's formula when they move into a new market is to cut their prices hugely compared to the other discount shops in the area. Except for Dollar Tree of course and they can't compete with them. But shops like K-Mart, and others , and especially mom and pop shops.
When all those go out of business and there's no other full retail discount stores in the area , Walmart jacks their prices hugely. When the prices were super low they took the tax break. When they upped the prices they took the tax break.
Their formula is why the Walton family is the richest family in America.

I knew a woman that hated Walmart because of their poor business ethics. She swore she'd never shop a Walmart. And this while she's working on an Apple computer. :lol Gotta prioritize on business ethics boycotts, not.
