What Are Some of the Drawbacks to Online Dating

Not sure why I made this typo but the topic should be...

What are some
..........of the drawbacks of dating online:sad

Re: What Are Sine

Awe! I thought we'd be talking about trigonometry and advanced mathematics (sine, cosine, tangent). :sad That's math humor. I majored in math, and we had some geeky humor. :lol

Be nice, Joe.

Not all women are wacko, but I'd say that a big drawback is that the vast majority of men & women are not telling the whole truth about themselves. Some of them are not intentionally being deceptive, but some are. It's human nature to put your best foot forward.

I'd say the drawbacks are pretty obvious in that regard, but I have heard a few success stories.

Did you try my signature in a graphical calculator program? That's how the sun moves back and forth (in minutes; y-axis) from the noon meridian at various times of the year (x-axis). m (the x-axis) stands for the month in fractions, with January 1st being "0". We are now about 0.3 way into September so m=8.3. Keep in mind this is an approximate formula, but a good approximation. The sun is now between 2 and 3 minutes faster than your local (not standard or DST) mean time.

The major drawback is deception, intentional or otherwise. And it appears to be on the part of both male and female.

The mantra of "we are way too busy to meet someone" is, to me, old and tired. It has become the lazy marketing line of the online dating world. I gave up on Match.com and others a few years ago. The lady I am currently seeing, I met at work. She is honestly the best person I have ever met. Downside is that she wants to be only friends until her son graduates High School next year.

The up side is that she wants to only be friends... maybe a slow relationship will blossom into a good one in time. She says she wants to marry her best friend - and you don't get to be best friends overnight.

I am going to invest the next year or so in her and see where we go. If another comes along in that time, fine. If not, fine. Lori really is the best; she is very stable, encouraging, a real "glass half full" person, good mom (but does not spoil her kids and makes them get out of their own messes), she's close to her mom, and no one at work has a bad thing to say about her.

Never met someone like her online. I find that most online daters are looking for instant relationships - and they usually don't work, do they?

Oh, another good thing about her... she does not "left seat drive" and simply CANNOT get car sick. Believe me, I've tried!

I would think that the person who says this will also be 'too busy' once you are with them...especially in marriage.

I'm convinced friendship really is the foundation of a good marriage. When all the other stuff goes away--sex, charm, money, status, good looks--the satisfaction of true friendship will still be there. But so many people base a relationship on the fleeting things of life...and get terribly disappointed and angry when they lose those things.

I find that most online daters are looking for instant relationships - and they usually don't work, do they?
By the very nature of what it means to 'crave the instant' I don't see how they could work for long. Desperation and impatience are probably the two biggest factors in abusive relationships--relationships where one or both spouses demand the uninterrupted gratification of the fleeting things in each other they got married to enjoy.

Oh, another good thing about her... she does not "left seat drive" and simply CANNOT get car sick. Believe me, I've tried!
Unless she has a long neck to stick her head well away from the inside of your vehicle I wouldn't try to get her sick in a nice car like yours, lol.

Your points are well taken. I was on one of these dating site. A lady got married to a man who was divorced and she ended up divorcing him.

I think that the Internet is the perfect environment for deception. I still believe in the old fashion way. Church, work, community etc. I think the Internet is good for conversation with the one you intend to be witih through emails etc. Unless the person is someone you have known over the years and have met online. We live in a instant society where everything is haste. Relationships take time and online relationships cannot flourish like this.

Mr. Tim you and your maths. Might get you to build me a sundial lol.:)

Let me tell you about the lady I met in 2009 on Match.com and married in 2010.
We divorced in 2010 - she put on an act and I bought it, I never thought any adult would be stupid enough to think that deception would work. She seemed offended that I would not tolerate the lies.

Total screwball.

All the chicks are wacko

See we agree :)

And when I read "sine" I thought of this.

Re: What Are Sine

Now, while we are on the subject of 3-phase current, we know why between two legs of each phase we get 208v, right?

The potential difference is the geometric distance of two 120v vectors separated by 120 degree phase angle. This makes a triangle easily solved by the law of cosines, i.e.: (120)^2 + (120)^2- 2(120)(120)cos(120) = 207.8v (to the nearest tenth) to be exact.[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]

Re: What Are Sine

Ok, Tim. So when they told me the line from D.C. Cook to the South Bend sub was 765,000 volts - is that phase to phase or phase to ground?

Re: What Are Sine

Cowards? Hmmmmmmmm. I think you have a point, I was going to disagree, but thought about it.

Cowards and Deceivers - that's my take.

But only if the transformer or transformers are connected WYE

Here in the philly area we have lots of 4 wire DELTA connections.

They are kinda cool because you can grab a somewhat unbalanced two phase off of them and run that ancient equipment without having to have a "Scott Connection"

Believe it or not we still have two phase equipment here.

BTW the 208V from the delta is the hypotenuse of a right triangle

Re: What Are Sine

That's why I told the Admins we need a tech forum (for electrical stuff). Such threads in such a forum would make this site very interesting. We have such wonderful and capable members here. (Pizza, Tim, wip, joe etc...etc). I know it's a christian site - but education is part of Christianity

Re: What Are Sine

Deception is a pretty big one. You can be anyone you like online. It not opens up the possibility of stalking and issues with real-life meetings (especially for women and young people) but also misrepresentation.

You also have the drawback of not meeting them at a mutual location. Eg if you "met someone" at a rock gig then you'd have that music in common already - and that's how you met! But meeting online, it's more for the sake of dating rather than meeting someone through a mutual interest or friend even.

Then again, online you get the chance to meet people you never would have had the chance to meet in the 'real world'. For better or for worse.

Yeah, Joe, good point. I was going by a 3-wire delta (or I should say "Y") with only 120v.

The interesting thing you have there is the delta being 240v we have a center tap that's grounded and for a residential situation I take it that phase A and phase C are all we see to get the two legs with the neutral in between.

I'm more of an electronics technician actually with the theoretical math. I'm not as familiar with the actual infrastructure of power companies, although I can do simple stuff like house wiring and installing circuit breakers. My retired brother-in-law is better at that and knows all that stuff as he went out in the field and worked on power stations as well. So if I have a question in that regards, I ask him. :)
