Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Mat 8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Luk_8:52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.

Luk 15:22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
Luk 15:23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
Luk 15:24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
Rev_20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Just a few examples of the word 'dead' .. I am not forgetting context has much to do with our understanding ...

May sound simple, but I would say -

Dead = Absent of Life

Now, you can get into the different aspects of that. Spiritual, physical, and metaphoric(which is sometimes spiritual and sometimes physical).

I know in heaven there will be no more of it - any of it. lol

but what is life Scripturaly speaking ..

You, wisely, mention context here and that is the answer. Some of these speak of the physical and some the spiritual death, the death we were born with that drives people nuts with their failure to grasp understanding of the concept, inadequate understanding of the Bible's revelation of God.

i.e. That statement, often, draws shocked replies of the nature of, "Do you mean children are going to Hell?

Of course I mean nothing of the sort! But we are not born saved, that is a task for later in life. I take Matt. 18:2-4 as the basis of my belief that until children are old enough to know they need Jesus to take control of their lives, they are not saved but, or, rather they are not mature enough to have their sin imputed to them. A great article for this is at http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2013/may-web-only/do-all-children-go-to-heaven.html?start=1 at Christianity Today.

One needs to look up a NT word in a Greek lexicon to get the Strong's # for that word,
and then determine what the word means in a particular verse in a book such as Vine's.

but what is life Scripturaly speaking ..

Well that's a good question.

Life = Anything that grows, responds to stimuli, and reproduces.

Honestly, I think that life could be defined down to anything that reproduces.

For example though(physically speaking); that is not saying that a woman who is barren is not alive, because the cells in her body are reproducing. Her body is alive, but the species is not reproducing.

Strictly Biblical speaking, it has to be defined as to whether its physical life or spiritual life. Because in Romans 8:10 you find both life and death in the same being.

as sinners we are dead in our sin Is salvation a resurrection ?

In Romans 8:10 these are the two words used for life and death.

Death = nekros - #G3498

Life = zōē - #G2222

But there are actually many words that have similar meaning to both. So the passage in question would have to be looked at specifically.

So I suppose it is impossible to say exactly what life and death are outside the passage in question.

Anything in particular your looking at reba?

salvation = sōtēria - #G4991 - Deliverance

Which comes from the root word of #G4990 which means "savior, deliverer, preserver"

It doesn't indicate a transformation of any kind really. So I would have to say salvation is not a type of resurrection.

So this is interesting. The first passage you list, Ephesians 2:1 has the word - ōn - that is translated "quickened" in some and "made alive" in others.

The same word is used many times in other verses for; being, was, come, were, is, which

Root word that the above comes from is - eimi

which means; to be, to exist, to happen, to be present.

That is the word used in John 8:58 - "I am"

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

You got my mind working now reba! :study

John 11:25 - Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

Resurrection - anastasis - #G386 - rise from the dead - used as a noun in this verse, but has the meaning of actual coming to life again.

Life - zōē - same as the word in the above post

Revelation 20:12 - And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.

Dead - nekros - #G3498 - one that has breathed its last, lifeless; destitute of life, without life, inanimate.

Life - zōē - #G2222

Based on the words and context, the book of life seems to be a literal record of that which took place during physical life.

And the "dead" word used comes from(apparently) the root word nekus - which is literally "a corpse"

What does this story tell us about death

Joh 11:35 Jesus wept.

Well, to me it says Jesus has absolute power. Death is subject to Him as much as life is.

But to be honest, I am completely lost of the thought process here. But I would love to hear yours. :)

I dont have an agenda to my questions.. Things that make me wonder , ponder , realize how little we grasp of Him ..

I see. I figured you didn't have an agenda, but thought there had to be a reason why you brought up the thought.

most all of my studies are sparked by something I read or heard that seemed interesting to me. Then I just start chasing the rabbit till it goes in a hole or I see a squirrel....... :)
