Does it surprise you? "At our church, there are several middle aged women with tatts"

PS: Paul1965; Ms Kathi. Also, I talked a while ago to a guy who had John 3.16 tattooed on his arm: it was the tattoo that made me speak with him and I'm sure I have not been the only person. He had the whole verse done - must have taken a long while - but I would have thought that to remain effective even just the reference 'John 3.16' in suitable lettering can be effective also as a conversation-starter.

(Two cents'.)

Blessings.

Ms Kathi: Well, yes, exactly, yes. And from the point of view of the tattooed Christian (in a faith/Bible based design) it can be a real thrill to be approached and asked to give 'a reason for the hope that is within' us (1 Peter 3.15). Some Christians keep to the word of mouth and living aspects of witness; others longing for the joy of participating in the inked medium of testimony also prove willing to go under the needle.

Blessings.

Putting a tattoo on your body is a sin. As a "son / daughter" of God, "heirs" of God - and "co heirs" of Christ according to the promise, "the righteous" of God by faith in Christ Jesus, and a "Ambassador" for Christ, we are commanded not to worry about our bodies. This is a very serious sin of little faith, idolatry, rebellion, and witchcraft. For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body - 1 Corinthians 6:20 NASB. Jesus says the person that has done this has little faith!

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:25-34 NKJV

I think this has been taken out of context. The Lord Jesus is in the verses quoted taking about not worrying about what to wear.

Wearing a bracelet or a tattoo etc with a faith related message, with a motive to getting to talk to people about the Savior, is something rather different.

Blessings.

Blessings,

Pray for a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. (I) Pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened - Ephesians 1:17-18 ESV

Revelation knowledge is needed to fully understand about the Kingdom.

maybe just a bit obscure,...
Blessings.
Do you have to judge? :shame
I would think that look would bring about much more conversation than some old woman with less than a most prominent tattoo of a fish on their hand. He probably walked into your church and had people falling down at his feet asking him how to be saved huh? :) No, maybe not; was that Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue to be bowed to?

When I used the word 'obscure' before I think my intended meaning was that I found it a bit hard to follow what you were saying.

Why wouldn't you just ask to start a witness for God conversation? Hey you great Christ looking person, those are great Christian bones (Created by Jesus) through your tattooed face; it reminds me of the godlike rays portrayed on simulated pictures of Jesus I've seen. You could start off with "Oh, I really, really love talking about tattoos; don't you?" Are your tattoos faith based? Do older women follow you around wondering where and how to get them? Uh, what's that great machete and bow and arrow you're carrying used for? Do you realize that you could add the words "Jesus Saves" tattooed on the end of your nose? Come to think of it made up man, have you ever considered a fish placard on the back of your car instead, though I've got to admit that's quite a look you're sporting? I wonder if my wife would like me with that look; where'd you have it done? :)
Hmmmm . . . :chin

No such thing as a faith based tattoo..

tob
Disagree totally. A tattoo quoting scripture that has personal meaning to the tattoo-ee(?) is based on their faith in that piece of scripture. To say that they have not had it done out of their faith or their interpretation of faith is to outright question their faith or worse judge them. As no man has the right to judge us or to truly question our faith, the person doing so, is sinning and will be judged and condemned by the measure he uses.
Having a tattoo stating ones devotion to our Lord is no different to having a fish sticker on your bumper or prints of famous Christian artworks on the walls of our home. If you have it done in praise of Him. If to do so is wrong, I would suggest that all churches of every denomination start taking out the stained glass windows and taking down artworks now, lest they be condemned because tattoos are an art form just the same as these examples. To condemn one as not faith based means you must condemn all art work.
The exception to this is if the person concerned has a tattoo mocking Christ as Lord of all. In this case, by the intentions of their own heart,it is not faith based and they have condemned themselves unless they repent.

Paul1965:

This describes the situation of many men and women today who wish to do it, going under the needle with the motive of communicating their faith as a testimony.

TOG and Farouk, actually most tattoo parlors use sterile (in sealed packet) single use needles and autoclaves to sterilize the head of the "gun". These are practices adopted from the medical profession and are considered the benchmark of cleanliness by the AMA. The client should always watch to make sure the artist opens a fresh needle before starting the piece.
It's only the back alley artists, the poorer countries and in prisons where there is the risk of infection with hepatitis, HIV and other blood borne diseases through poor hygiene practices and the reuse of equipment.

Yup, remember Farouk, I'm one of "them" even if it has been a while since the last one.:)

I think you have to be very selective and know who is giving you a tattoo. It can be safe.Yes,you do have to be careful.

Ms Kathi: Yes, you are right: one's tattoo artist can often become almost a friend at the professional level of things, to whom one is willing to give over one's skin to his or her skill with the needle — not unusually — repeatedly. Care in selecting such a person is important, but like you say the desired experience can also be safe, once you know that you want to do it.

Blessings.

PS: Paul1965: Nowadays many parlors are more like salons - clean and airy - than the back alley establishments.

Blessings.
That's what I meant Farouk, the parlours, salons or tatt shops, who use single use needles, autoclaves etc...that was in reference to the improved conditions. Also many countries Oz included, the shop comes under the jurisdiction of the ministry of health or the health department with an annual check and three random checks per year to keep the operator on their toes / honest / clean
On the topic of airy, my last piece was at a shop in an open air market in Nakhon ratchasima city. Ephesians 5:25, in Thai script on the left side of my neck. Drew quite a crowd of locals all oohing and aahing as the work was done. The fact it was in Thai script meant I got a lot of questions about what it meant and its origin from the predominantly Buddhist onlookers. It just may be that it was their first ever reading of a verse of the Gospel and if so, one can only hope that it moved them to pursue the truth more deeply...and yes the side of your neck stings like a hornet!...not bee, HORNET. Further, because I can feel the question burning, yes, single use needle and autoclave, single use latex surgical gloves, hospital grade disinfectant. I have been a customer of Lek's a few times. Very talented artist. In the off season here, he is sponsored by a parlour in Osaka japan and works there with advanced bookings.. (not sure if Yakuza :)
Blessings all

Hi, Paul1965: Great info! and it sounds like your many times repeated, practical knowledge has made it for you a deeply desirable experience that you intend to continue to pursue, and the faith related aspect of it and being able to testify through it seems to be of special appeal to you, as well.

Sounds like you are pretty satisfied with the cleanliness aspect of the establishments you have used, as well and are thoroughly convinced, like Ms. Kathi, just said, that
It can be safe.
.

Blessings.
