Christianity and Luxury

Hi Jason,

I agree that "rich" is a relative term. To many in the world the poorest Americans are rich, however, I was using term in context of the OP, basically, spending money on excess.
a home can be an excess. my brother let his home go in order to be with his kids. he felt it was better to be a dad to them then just own a home and hardly be in their lives. a wise decision as I later saw. im not saying one shouldn own a home but again define excess that too will differ. I have but one hobby. I could take that and feed the poor. others play golf and that isn't cheap. should they do the same?

Being slothful on the job is not Christian....

I'm not suggesting being slothful. I work hard not matter who I'm working for. My point is if you pour yourself into a position to get rich it usually requires a good bit of time, it's not usually a 9-5 Job that gets one rich. If one is spending great deals of time working to acquire wealth then their time to serve God is reduced.

We could go round and round about everything people do. We could all sell the computers we're using to access this forum. My point is that gaining wealth detracts from our seeking the kingdom. Everyone needs a place to live, that could be a home or it could be renting either way it is how it is done that makes the difference.

im going to have to say that the poor can be greedy and sin. I have done that..

I bring up what is excess because to me I dont need much but my wife buys plants galore and decorates our home. if I was single I wouldn't do that.i dont think that is a sin but its what she does that is her thing. I dont need 50 palm trees to be alive. that is to some excessive. I have exaggerated that but I have about ten palms and other plants that total about 30 plants. it will grow as my wife decides to plant them and get them. my brother whom I make more then doesn't do that and he tithes.he isn't into that.

I was wonder when Meyers private jets would come in. I believe that at costs that saves her money from the times she flies. I cant remember whom showed me the math on that not that I dont think Meyers isn't greedy, but she was cleared of any irs tax law breaking.

So I would use your thoughts about plants for this...
I have say $60 to spend on plants. On my way to the nursery I see a man with a sign that says hungry. Do I drive on by or do I go and buy that man some food?

my point exactly.

one doesn't have to be rich to have that problem of not taking of the poor.

Previous to the IRS investigation she donated all of the royalties from her book sales to the ministry.
Now I understand she was advised not to do that. She cut her salary and keeps the money from the sales. Then donates a portion back to the ministry from those sales.

The pastor who did the Fire Conference, maybe John McCarthy?, is quite wealthy but no one ever points that out because he is not WoF.

That is Very true.

I hope you did think I was saying something against your wife and her plants. Heaven forbid, no!
You just made me think of plants and I like them too and gardening, prettying the yard up.

im not a fan of hers at all but sadly here many listen to the wof. they are godly and I just dont get that but they do.

no, I wish I could give, my wife isn't into jesus. she sees that as foolish thing and wouldn't donate to the church. so im forced to either do so against her will and pay the price or not give. so I need prayer.

Seems it comes back to the base question what is rich... How much money does it take to be rich. I have known one multimillion family in my life they were a sad lot.

I agree that rich is a relative term. However, is would submit that if anyone knows what rich is to any one individual, it is God. It is to Him that we will answer for what we've been given by Him and what we've done with it. I personally believe I have a lot to answer for as I was in a position to make a lot of money. I don't believe I used that money the way I should have. Sure I tithed, most of the time what I should have but there was plenty left over that I squandered. That money could have feed the poor or put clothes on peoples backs rather than the things I used it for. How am I gonna stand before God and justify my eating at restaurants (to often) and paying for hobbies when God is standing there showing me the hungry and the poor, people who are starving while I'm wasting money on things that have nothing to do with the kingdom?

Your situation is a little different in that your wife isn't a Christian. That does present some problems not faced by a Christian couple.

kinda falls under this...
1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Do we know He did not have a home in Nazareth or Capernaum? If Joseph had died as the oldest/or only son He was to take care of mom, right?
Did He not have a place becasue He was traveling?
Do we know? My mind tells me joseph the carpenter would have built a home for his family...

The last post I see you make on post #61 adds to or changes the question. Allow me to answer all questions you ask on both posts.

Is luxury bad? - No.
Can I own up to 4 cars...and buy whatever...? - Yes
I like phones. I have over 5...currently considering Lumina 1020. Does that make me sinful? - No.
Is the bible against luxury? - No.
Now how about pastors who own jets? - No.

And my question has not been answered:
How much 'rich' is sinful - None.
how much 'poor' is biblical? - None.
My thoughts. :study
