Coronavirus

So why didn't they build a mask factory so food workers would have something to protect themselves with?

China used to produce half of the world's masks. They ramped production and now produce 85% of the world's masks. Why can't the USA produce masks too? What has happened to US manufacturing capability?
Robots build masks...Wright industries is one company that does that sort of thing. And it takes time to build a machine to do so...all the machines in existence are out of country. And then we went into quarantine.

We can have cloth masks made in South America...lots of CNC computerized sewing and cutting machines there. Not much here in North America...and it takes time to get the materials in to produce the quantity needed.

We have only been at this for TWO months.

But trust me...if desired enough...
We can eventually produce enough for everyone on the planet.

Look,
Spring Hill GM plant can produce over 90 SUVs an hour...every hour...24hrs a day, week in and week out when needed. (If they can keep supplies on hand) problem being that they need a place to park the completed cars. And vehicles are complicated bits of machinery.

Masks are much simpler and cheaper...meaning that things must be more automated. Money much smaller to pay for that automation.
2,000 masks are not expensive...probably no more than $10,000 retail. Less if they are disposable. And it takes about 10 million dollars or more to set up a small factory in the USA. That's not counting people to run the place and engineering to figure out floor plans and power. Then comes logistics to get materials in and product out.

All these hurdles can be overcome...but it takes time.
We have only been at this for two months.

If this virus was deadlier than it is...we would have been in real trouble.
As it is we are in trouble now...quarantines can lift...dead people dont come back to life.
So I agree that the plants should have quarantined their staff until they got PPE...but they didn't. They kept going same as usual.

And that's the problem we are having.

So in the meantime is there an effective way we can make our own masks, and if so what materials would we need to use ?

The sleeve off a t-shirt and two shoe laces can make a mask suitable for protection.
It needs to be knit material and not woven like a dress shirt. Also two layers...

You don't have to use shoe laces...you can use whatever to tie it in place...
But an adult size sleeve from a short sleeved tshirt works...and no sewing.
So long as it stretches snug over your mouth and nose.

Washington Post said:
They started three to four weeks after the big wave of adult sickness, mostly in Europe and up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, where covid-19 hit hard.

Children are being diagnosed with serious symptoms a few weeks beyond when adults are. It may be that 19 stays inside of them for several weeks, because their immune systems are not yet strong enough to repel it. Then things start to happen to them after 19 has been in their system for several weeks.

Not enough is known about 19 to say that it is safe for children to be exposed to it. People with young children at home should be cautious until researchers figure out how 19 affects children in the long run.

I'm sorry but I'm with Michael74 on this one. I don't think a mask made out of a T-shirt is going to be enough to protect you from catching the virus.

Here's the latest news on the state of the Coronavirus in Ohio.

Its too early to decide the school thing. Children are starting to show up at the hospital weeks beyond when adults did. 19 may be affecting children over several weeks. Their immune systems might not yet be strong enough to fight it off properly, letting it stay in their systems for weeks. Researchers don't know enough about 19 to know whether it is safe for children to be exposed to it. They might learn more over the summer.

They need tests to determine what exactly is happening when 19 invades children. They don't have those tests yet. They just don't know what 19 does to them over the long run yet.

Here's the latest news on the state of the Coronavirus in Ohio. Does anybody else have protesters in their state or country?

Not sure what that governer is on about, both the woman and the reporter were excercising there rights. That woman has a right to critisise the media in public space, it's freedom of opinion and expression.

Yes, she does. However, she is only allowed to talk. She can't get up into their face. Especially with a plague extant.

The governer said he makes the policies yet also respects people to excersise there rights and enforces policy that infringes on civil rights. It kind of does not make sense.

You know you actually do sort of have a point there. At the same time it seems like we're only getting one side of the story and we don't know if the reporter was saying something obnoxious.
