Bible Study good Friday

Wednesday Day 1
Thursday Day 2
Friday the Third Day

Did Jesus rise again on the Third Day?

I don’t think Friday is the first day of the week.

I could just ask you to count back from Sunday, the first day of the week, the third day in which He rose, two days and tell me which day that is?

Sunday the third day
Saturday the Sabbath, the second day
Friday the first, when He was crucified.

You will then come to the conclusion that the only issue is “3 nights”.

The phrase 3 days and three nights doesn’t necessarily have to refer to a literal 72 hour period, for if it did He would have to have been resurrected at 3:00 PM in the afternoon.

Three days and three nights is an “idiomatic” expression that refers to three consecutive or calendar days.

Matthew Chapter 26-28

Using the Lunar solar calendar in two days I believe Jesus was speaking about High Sabbath that would begin in two days on the 22nd of Nisan as they were already celebrating the seven day passover of Unleaven Bread that started at sunset on the 15th of Nisan after the days of preparation that started on the 13th of Nisan as all the yeast had to be taken out of the home and all the food prepared for seven days. Since the Festival of Unleaven Bread started on Friday at sunset to the following Saturday at sunset to sunrise being seven days this brings it to the next Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset being the High Sabbath.

The chief priest, scribes and elders of the people consulted that they would take Jesus that night and kill him (Wednesday night), but by Jewish law they could not kill him during feast day and this is why they handed Jesus over to Pilate. It would have been a Wednesday during the seven day festival that after they had finished the Lord's supper that they went with Jesus out to the mount of Olives that evening. Jesus told them this night after they went to the mount of Olives that he would be betrayed and arrested.

Here is the math. Jesus was arrested on Wednesday night on the mount of Olives where He and his disciples went to after the Lord's supper during the Festival of unleavened Bread. Thursday He faced Pilate and the people condemned Jesus. He was beaten and then nailed to the cross early in the morning hours and died around 3PM that afternoon after giving up the ghost. Thursday being the first day and first night He laid in the tomb would bring it to being three days and three nights ending at sunrise Sunday morning when God raised Him from the tomb.
Maybe I was thinking of the HIGH SABBATH....
Yes,,, I think so.
No need to answer my first post to you...I think I called it High Passover.

Also, these topics come up because we want to believe the N.T. is infallible.

Is it?

New thread....

Sorry but Jesus rose “on the third day”, which was the first day of the week.

Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. Luke 23:53-24:1

Sunday Day 3 - The Day He rose.

Saturday the Sabbath, the day they rested according to the commandment. Day 2

Friday the day before the Sabbath, the day He was crucified.
Day 1

The time He died was the ninth hour. 3:00 PM

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.
The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Matthew 27:46-50

I don't see how you can make 3 hours out of day one.
again this was not a regular Sat. Sabbath,it was a High Sabbath, first day of Passover.

The first day of the feast, the High Day, the 15th day of Nisan, our Wed. Sunset to Thur. Sunset, the first night and day n the tomb.

The second day of the feast, the 16th of Nisan, our Thurs. Sunset to Fri.Sunset, the second night and second day in the tomb.

If Jesus died on Thursday AND rose on the first day of the week, by YOUR calculations He would have been dead 4 days and 3 nights.

I like to go by the days He was dead.
John saying 3 days and 3 nights was how JLB explained it...
it was an idiomatic expression..a way of speaking.

Here in Italy, for example, if it's Monday and you plan to see the person the next Monday...you can say SEE YOU IN A WEEK, but most persons will say SEE YOU IN 8 DAYS.
(which by OUR calculations would be the next TUESDAY)

How can that work?
Was Jesus in the grave 24 hours on Wed., no, so how can you call that day one?
[/QUOTE]
This comes up every year in one forum or another.

Of course you know that Jews count their 24 hour days differently than we do:

So:
Friday 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM DAY ONE
Saturday TO 6:00 pm DAY TWO (from Fri 6:00 PM)
Sunday 6:00 AM till
discovery of empty tomb DAY THREE (from Sat 6:00 PM)

I believe we need to forget about the 3 nights.

I understand the Jews celebrated Passover on the 14th of Nissan...
Why would you even begin on the 15th?

The Jews used a Lunar Solar calendar that is different than our Gregorian calendar we use today as the first month of their new year began in the month of Abib/Nisan being March/April. Their calendar was not a 365 day calendar like the one we use. The Hebrew Sabbath was instituted by God given to Moses in Exodus 16 as a day that started from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset.

Here is an unknown fact that most Christians and even some Jews have never heard of. It's called seudah maphsehkey which means "the last supper" that took place on the 13th of Nisan being a Wednesday evening at sunset that began the next day being Thursday. This is the last supper Jesus would eat with His disciples before He was betrayed by Judas, Matthew 26:17-29. This took place before the beginning of Passover that started on the 14th of Nisan, Thursday at sunset, before the Festival of Unleavened Bread that followed immediately on the 15th of Nisan being Friday at sunset that started the Saturday High Sabbath.

After Jesus and His disciples finished their meal and sung a hymn they all went out to the mount of Olives. This would be the evening beginning of the day Thursday after Wednesday’s sunset that they all went to the garden in the mount of Olives. During that evening Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss and the Roman Guards arrested Jesus bringing Him to Caiaphas the high priest where the scribes and elders were gathered. Being that it was now the 14th of Nisan and the beginning of Passover Jewish law prevents Caiaphas from holding a trial so Jesus is turned over to Pontius Pilate to be examined for the charges brought against Him.

John 18:39 the Jews had a custom to release one prisoner at the time of Passover. Pilate instructed the guards to release Jesus and Barabbas and the crowd chose Barabbas to be released. This was early morning Thursday after sunrise that court was held, Jesus condemned, scourged and lead away to be nailed to a cross. On the ninth hour of the day being around 3:PM Jesus cried out and gave up the ghost.
Matthew Chapter 26-28

Preparation day was on the 13th of Nisan as everything had to be prepared before Wednesday at sunset that began the 14th day of Nisan being Passover before the Festival of Unleavened Bread (Matza) that started on the 15th of Nisan Friday at sunset. Matthew 26:30 after Jesus and the disciples finished the Passover meal they all went out to the mount of Olives. This would place the time being after Wednesday at sunset beginning the next day being Thursday

The Festival of Unleaven Bread (Matza) being the second Festival began immediately after the day of Passover on the 15th of Nisan (Friday at sunset) and ran for seven days ending on the 22nd (Saturday at sunset). The Sabbath day begins on Friday at sunset and ends on Saturday at sunset. Evening is at sunset when day ends and another day begins. The Festival of Unleaven Bread starts on Friday at sunset and ends Saturday at sunset as a this High Sabbath is the seven days of Pesach (Passover) starting at sunset on the 15th day of Nisan (April).

High Sabbath is seven annual festivals and days of rest that do not necessarily happen on weekly Shabbat (Sabbath). Two occur in the Spring. The first and seventh days of Pesach (Passover). Another one, Shavuot (Feast of Weeks/Pentecost) occurs in Tammuz/June. Four occur in the Fall in the seventh month of Tishri/October, Rosh Hashannah (Trumpets), Yom Kipper, Sabbath of Sabbaths (Atonement) and Sukkoth (Tabernacles).

The day of preparation mentioned in John 19:31-42 and the commemoration of the Festival of Unleaven Bread being a high Sabbath goes back to Exodus chapter 16 when on the 15th day of Nisan, being the second month that began the exodus of the Hebrews being led by Moses and Aaron departing out of the land of Egypt to Sinai.

Since the holy days (certain Sabbaths) can fall on any day of the week the preparation day can fall on any day of the week. On the day of the Festival of Unleaven Bread all food, Sabbath artifacts, cleaning and arranging schedules of prayer and time together had to be prepared before Friday at sunset.

Three days and three nights begin with Thursday being the first day and first night. Friday is the second day and second night. Saturday is the third day and third night with Jesus being raised from the tomb Sunday around sunrise.

So you are calling 3pm - 6 pm, 3 hours, one day ,no,
Sunset to sunset, is how they measure the days.
Sunset usually is 6pm, or there about.

So, Wed.3pm-Thursday, sunset, one day, first day
Thursday, sunset ,to Friday sunset second day
Friday sunset to Sat. Sunset, the third day, and of course, Sat.Sunset is the first day of the week, thus rose after Sat.Sunset, first day of the week..Sunday

If ya'll can't see it after this post, I give up, lol.

One thing I forgot to add is that Sabbaths are not 24 hour days as they are from sunset to sunrise. No one can put an actual time on any sunset or sunrise as we can not measure it with a mechanical clock, but only like the Jews who used the cycles of the sun and moon.

The day after He was crucified was the High Sabbath, Passover.
John 19:31, it was the PREPARATION day, they did not let the bodies remain on the cross, for the High Sabbath, which refers to Passover. First day of the feast, not the weekly Sabbath.

The third day was Sunday, and they discovered the stone rolled away early in the morning on the first day of the week.

This what not a 24 hour period.

The third day started at 6:00 PM on Saturday, and by daybreak on Sunday the prophetic word had been fulfilled.

That’s about 12 hours, not 24.

Likewise, the first day in which He was crucified, started the day before the Sabbath, which began at 6:00 on the same day He was crucified.

Friday was the first day, and by 6:00 PM the second day had officially began and was the Sabbath, (Saturday).

Yes the day of preparation is the day before the Sabbath.

Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
John 19:31

  • that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath

The bodies had to have been removed before the Sabbath began. That Sabbath being after the Passover was a high Sabbath.

Clearly the Sabbath began at sundown on the day He was crucified.

Crucified on Friday, and gave up His Spirit at the ninth hour, 3:00 PM. The body was removed because the Sabbath was to begin in three hours, at sundown.

I tried to avoid this, but got caught in....as I usually do.
Everything you posted is good and you even hit on the High Sabbath which I had mentioned.

The problem here is this:

HOW do you know that Jesus was raised on Sunday very early in the morning. If so, when did He got to Hades?
