Here is the Gospel that Jesus sent Paul to preach.
Words of Christ in red.
- in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins
This is what it means to turn to God; ie Repent
But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
“Therefore, King Agrippa,
I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. Acts 26:16-20
This is what Paul told king Agrippa he does, calling Gentiles to repent, turn to God.
- that they should repent, turn to God
Turning to God is how we obey the Gospel command repent.
When believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we respond in obedience by confessing with our mouth that Jesus is Lord.
This is how we repent, by confessing Jesus as Lord.
We are turning away from Satan as Lord, and turning to Jesus as our Lord, and we are forgiven our sins.
Here is Paul demonstrating this principle to the Church at Rome.
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10
- you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
This occurs by grace
through faith, for when we hear the message of God we receive faith, and
by grace (The Spirit) we are able to confess Jesus as Lord.
The Spirit gives us the power, the grace, to confess Jesus as our Lord, thus breaking the grip Satan once held over us to keep us in bondage to his kingdom, the kingdom of darkness.
Confessing Jesus as Lord is how we are transferred into the kingdom of God, from the kingdom of darkness.
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and
no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3
The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation.
The power to set us free from the grip of Satan.
This is what it means to set the captives free.
Ths is done by the power of His Spirit, the Spirit of grace, through the obedience of faith, which is us confessing with our mouth, the Lord Jesus.
Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
