Lucanus cervus, better known as Stag beetle


Here's what I've found out about it.

Larvae of Lucanidae inhabit old stumps and decaying logs, feeding on the fungus-enriched wood.

The family LUCANIDÆ, or Lucanians, so named from the Linnæan genus LUCANUS, must be placed next to the Scarabæians in a natural arrangement. This family includes the insects called stag-beetles, horn-bugs, and flying-bulls, names that they have obtained from the great size and peculiar form of their upper jaws, which are sometimes curved like the horns of cattle, and sometimes branched like the antlers of a stag.


They lay their eggs in crevices of the bark of trees, especially near the roots, where they may sometimes be seen thus employed. The larvæ hatched from these eggs resemble the grubs of the Scarabæians in color and form, but they are smoother, or not so much wrinkled. The grubs of the large kinds are said to be six years in comingto their growth, living all this time in the trunks and roots of trees, boring into the solid wood, and reducing it to a substance resembling very coarse sawdust; and the injury thus caused by them is frequently very considerable.

The time of its appearance is in July and the beginning of August. The grubs live in the trunks and roots of various kinds of trees, but particularly in those of old apple-trees, willows, and oaks.

Well, little did I know that exactly 6 years ago when I moved into this house that the old wood from a tree that was cut down by the previous owner, and left there would be such a problem. I didn't think anything of it since it was in the back of the yard along the fence. And what does a city slicker know about old wood left to rot. I thought it would make good composte as time went on! Sheesh! What a mistake that was!

Anyway, I just piled leaves up against those logs thinking they would make a barrior to keep the leaves from falling though the fencing.
Now, here it is....6 years later and I am paying the consequences of allowing old wood to remain in one spot for so long.... beetles have laid their eggs and now they have matured.
Whoala! perfect recipe to breed beetles. keep old wood in your yard without ever moving it and let it rot along side some fresh young oak trees too. I should be happy I don't have a huge infestation of hornets or bees back there! Sheesh! Ignorance breeds bugs!

Now what? I wonder how bad the infestation is? eeek!
I think I now have to get rid of those old logs and sift through all the compost around those logs to get rid of the larvae and the beetles that I can find that have matured. Oh Lord, That's gonna be a huge job. I don't know if my back can take it. :sad

I think maybe I better call a specialist, one who kows how to be rid of those monster beetles! Oh this is just dreadfull! I have to find another way to look at this situation! What good can I find out of all this?

Let's see, maybe I can get some kind of a creature that loves to eat those things, somthing other than a chicken. Come to think of it, I was wondering why this one brave little Robin was hanging around me on saturday as I was digging there. I thought he wanted th worms, even though I didn't see many being dug up in that section of the compost pile. He probably wanted to get at the grubs! So maybe if I keep mixing it up everyday that robin will get nice and fat? I'll give it a week or so and if that doesn't fix it, I'll have to call a specialist.

BIG BUGS! TO BE OR NOT TO BE? That is the question!


Now I'm reading things about people wanting to breed stag beetles and how some don't want to exterminate them. but I'm not finding out why, except for the fact that this one person in Japan wants to breed them because he likes them and says they are rare over there. And the person who says ,"don't want to exterminate them", didn't say why at all.

so onward I go.... I'll be an expert on beetles by the time I'm finished doing this research! YOY! I hate bugs! Keep them away from me! Dont like spiders and snakes either! Wimens.... we like nice things... like flowers and vegetables without the hassle of pesky critters.

Confused! :-?

Sis, I know what you are saying and you know, after being there for that period of time, some of us Christians were kind of "in prison" with the censorship so high for the Christians but the rest could say just about anything. I think when we got here, we just let loose and maybe took it out on some posters here out of our frustration OVER THERE. We had no freedom there so when we got here, we went hog wild! The posters here didn't and don't deserve that.
I had to take a look at myself and remember that the people here had nothing to do with what happened there and it was time to just start fresh. I felt my work was done there and I think many others did too as it seems, one by one, most of the stronger Christians had left.
The posters here don't seem to be as easily offended so we should hear them out and post accordingly, biblically and truthfully but not to attack them personally. And as far as posting things about other posters on AI here at this forum, we should let that go.
If things aren't related to the topics, it should just be PM'd.
Fair enough?

(This isn't just for sis, but for all who posted at AI) :wink:

Now THAT would make me real happy. :-D

But now I'm kinda sad :sad ..... because of these huge ugly creatures invading my compost pile and I hope they don't spread into my garden.. because I used some of that soil as a filler in my vegetable and flower garden. :-? I haven't yet figured out if they are harmful or helpful? All I know is it HURTS REAL BAD when they pinch your fingers! :crying: :smt012

KILLER BUG EATING DUCK?????

I wonder, if I had one of these BIG KILLER BUG EATING DUCKS, rather than a chicken like lovely suggested, would it eat the Stag Beetles and their grubby grub relatives who took up residence in the compost pile in my back yard? I think I might need to make some mathmatical assumption about that possibility. :wink: But then, I wonder.....are ducks allowed to live in the city? :smt017
Apparently, the one above lives in Los Angeles in some really souped up duck mobile which has the ability to transform itself into many different decors.. :)colros:

Hi Sara, nice to see you here! I'd like to comment on the 'nuff said part of your post. I have read the postings both here and on the AI forum and unfortunately I do not believe it is right to just let it go. This is a public forum (in that anyone can access and read the posts). As such, personal offenses were made public against some of our brothers/sisters on the AI site. Therefore, public (and more importantly heartfelt) apologies should be given by those who have done the offending. For those who have not been banned, it is my hope that you would go there and do what you know is right in the sight of God. For those who have been banned, I'm sure you can post here and they will see it.

Speaking for myself FoxFan, which BTW I appreciate how you backed me up there at times! But personally I don't feel that I have anything else to say to those other people, except to stay back and pray for them (which also seemed to offend someone) I won't apologize for stating trruth from the word of God just because they got offended by it, I won't back down from that. I will shout it from the rooftops that JESUS is LORD and if people get offended by that , well you know what, I'd rather offend them than to offend my LORD. :D
