A look at 1 John 3.6

Yes. I realize that this statement will likely be looked negatively upon, because the prevalent teaching is that Christians continue to sin.
That is a false teaching.
Jesus said the truth would make us free, in John 8:32.
The Jews said, "from what ?"
Jesus answered..."Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." (John 8:34)
The truth can free us from serving sin !
However, people may differ in understanding of what "sin" is.
As John said, in 1 John 5:17, "All unrighteousness is sin..."

I completely agree.

As John said, in 1 John 5:17, "All unrighteousness is sin..."
Yes. Those who are freed by the Truth are made righteous:

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Cor 5:21).

The Savior said, "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Free from what? Free from sin (John 8:31-36). John testifies that what the Savior promissed came to pass, "Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him." (1 John 3:6). If some Christians sin, it means they don't know Him.
I knew God, but I rebelled against his clear call to be a pastor like Jonah's rebellion. When I became a pastor, I knew God through trust in Jesus, but my unconscious mind was full of self-centered anger because of losses, including the death of our second boy, when God delivered me from seven years of depression. I knew God but brought him my complaints and requests for him to remove physical pain like David in Psalms 22, 39 and 88; Job in chapter 10; Habakkuk; and Jeremiah in Lamentations. He chose not to relieve my pain, as he did for Paul's "thorn" (2 Corinthians 12:1-10), whatever that affliction was. Even Jesus asked the Father why he had let his enemies surround him, yet without sinning, by quoting Psalm 22:1.

Christians who know God do sin and constantly need the cleansing power of Jesus' death, but they are not dominated by sin and Satan. That is John's teaching.

If they are sinning, and they can only serve one master, Jesus says servants of sin hate God. (Matt 6:24)

He that committeth sin is of the devil
(1 John 3:6,8).

The Savior said, "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free [from sin]." (John 8:31-36).

If many Christians continue to sin, does this mean that they don't know the truth?

Not necessarily.
It could mean that they oppose the truth.
And if they oppose the truth, are they really Christians ?

I agree, if they oppose the truth they are not Christians. Yet, millions of Christians think that they know the truth and believe they continue to sin. There are thousands of such Christians denominations. Do they know the truth?

Either they know it and disregard it, or they don't even know they can live without sin.
God knows if they are willing to proceed down the narrow path, and won't hide the truth from them.

Most translations add something close to "whosoever abides in him does not CONTINUE to sin."

If you continue to sin you won’t be remaining in Christ.

Here is how we are instructed to remain in Christ.

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24

If they don't know they can live without sin, it means they don't know the truth. Because the thruth is that those who are born of Yahweh cannot sin (1 John 3:9). People may believe in different denominational opinions about the Savior but not know the truth about Him.

What are His commandments?

What are His commandments?

Answer:
His commandments are His instructions of love.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:8-10

Keeping His commandments are how we demonstrate our love for God and love for His people.

Keeping His commandments are how we remain “in Christ”.

Agreed.
How long have you been a non-sinner ?
